How would you grade our player development?
Basic question about player development here.
Are we doing things the right way?
What is the right way?
Could it be improved on?
What are our challenges, if any?
Does lottery luck not matter because of your confidence in our player development?
How goes it for you?

Considering the Magic completely revamped that group over the past year I would say the jury is still out.

Our player development has been Turrible since JV was coach. And when we do polish our diamonds (Dipo) we trade 'em!

Favorite Magic players of all time:
1. Dennis Scott
2. Andrew Nicholson
3. Anthony "no-neck" Johnson

Mediocre player development because of so much coaching turnover. Nothing steady

The first question is subjective. Are we doing things the right way? Some people think throwing a player into the fire is the right thing, I don’t so therefore yes
Again, I think making a player earn their minutes instead of gifting them is the right way from a career perspective. I think too many guys come into the league with this expectation that their owed something. They need to know that they aren’t the best on their team anymore in most cases and that some Undrafted guy who worked his tail off to get to the NBA can and will outplay them.
I don’t know if it could be improved upon because I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes of player development during the season. Knowing that most obvious improvements (Shooting, footwork, handles strength) happen in the offseason I would say we’re doing ok. I would put our young guys in more critical late game situations more often if we can but other than that I’m happy with with the coaching staff is doing.
Our challenges in player dev is not targeting players with an established offensive skill set to build off of but instead targeting players with long arms and hoping they develop basic fundamentals.
I think lottery luck matters but the FO has to do a better job drafting better players. I think people need to consider that Hennigan and now WeHam have drafted incomplete players with huge deficiencies in lieu of athleticism or length when looking at our player dev history.

I hope we've paid for the best player development staff that money can buy.
Because there isn't a single "sure thing" young player on our roster.
They ALL need serious development and we knew that when we drafted them that way.

Re: How would you grade our player development?
Over what time period? We've clearly given up on a number of talents way too early since the rebuild started. Would those players have reached the same heights had they remained in Orlando? I don't know. I doubt it.
I believe Skiles and Vogel were terrible teachers. I'm very happy with Clifford though. We just don't have much youth on the roster at present though. As of this moment, I believe our player development is pretty good. If we give Clifford talent, I think he will develop it.

voted D, but considered an F. Gordon has improved his shot, but that's mostly due to his work ethic

Re: How would you grade our player development?
NBA player development departments are a hoax imo. Its a place they put people trying to get their feet wet. What do they actually do? "Here practice jumpers" ? Imo they identify weaknesses, communicate that to the players, then they go out and work on their games in theCZ Eddie wrote:I hope we've paid for the best player development staff that money can buy.

offseason.
If a guy is going to be average or even bad then that's what they'll be. It doesnt matter how good a teams player devlopment department is
Thats why I dont, get why people got excited about Payton going to Chris Pauls camp. So what? I guess they thought hes suddenly going to be as good as Chris Paul?

First Regime: Piss Poor
Second Regime: Hard to tell given that Issac/Bamba are both in year one of their development. Give it 2-3 more seasons and we'll have the answers.

I disagree with this...
A really good example/question of Player Development being extremely pivotal is for a guy like Kawhi Leonard. Does he become a Superstar caliber player under the Orlando Magic if he is drafted here during the Hennigan era?
What I do agree with you on is that its not ALL based on an organizations development as the player has to have the drive/tools to become better player. But A LOT hinges on different combinations of methods/workouts/regiments that are recommended/implemented by the staffs and personnel can turn someone with all the tools into a Star player. This is what happened to Oladipo last season.

Re: How would you grade our player development?
If a player is not motivated to be great or has lackluster effort, then no development coach is going to make him great. Magic just had bad luck in that regard plus a horrid GM who traded away two of the best talents we had (Dipo/Harris)

I'd say C- but voted D. Definitely feels like other teams develop their young players so much better. I feel like Aaron Gordon would be talked about as an all-star caliber player if on another team
Keep Isaac

Below average, instead of giving them the keys and letting them make mistakes we put them on rails........ Slow and steady instead of pedal to the floor. Personally don't care for it too much anymore.

Re: How would you grade our player development?
I voted C but could also vote D. The reason I didn't even consider an F is because we've developed some players alright. We did a fantastic job with Vuc and Fournier and got the most out of them, imo. We did decently with Harris, Gordon, and Dipo. I think we're doing a fine job with Isaac and it's too early to tell on Bamba.
But, I don't think we've gotten the most out of any players besides Vuc and Fournier. I think we're starting to do better with Gordon of late though. In Isaac's case though, I think he's just too selfless and/or scared to try looking for his own shot. I don't think that's on the team, but on Isaac. He needs to be more aggressive.

Re: How would you grade our player development?
D or F. For a number of reasons.
Too much youth turnover over the years. (Tobias, EP, Mario, Oladipo, etc.) Too much coaching turnover.
Drafting players behind established starters, in similar positions, fighting for minutes on a below .500 team since 2012.
(Vuc/Bamba, Isaac/AG, Ibaka/AG, Mario/Fournier, Oladipo)
AG is really the only player that has been around long enough to properly gauge. He’s gotten better, but he’s never really hit that next level of a cornerstone as a #4 pick. Personally, I think a lot of it has to do with him being in a stagnent half court offense as opposed to run and gun that would actually fit his game. Developing him as a half court player hasn’t been that effective.

Re: How would you grade our player development?
For the first 3-years of the rebuild, the trainers were very poor. The accumulation of injuries to the youth really damaged their capacity for growth. The slow development of Bamba is a response to Isaac's injuries as well (which was more adequate that responses to Gordon, Payton, Oladipo, Fournier, etc.)

Re: How would you grade our player development?
People overrate player's development.
It's not miracle work. Nobody can turn you into great athlete if you are not.
Nobody can teach you how to play like prime Hakeem if you don't have born instics.
Sports like basketball are insticts driven, for elite players decision making comes naturally, if you ever had chance to play with kid who later turned into pro athlete at any sport you would see difference.
I had honor as kid play with Šarić , it's just different level, kid was 12 i was 14 he just did all the right play without ever thinking about it.
Later in highschool i played soccer with guy who turned pro at 17 (plays in Romania, first division now ), his ability to shift directions, speed, ballhandling were all there at age of 14. It's incredible how unfair talent disparity is.
My friend's brother was 8 yeras old playing soccer when we knew he'll be pro player . He is now making doubt in best team in B division and has offers from some big clubs. Kid was dribbling through 5 other kids when he was 8 years old.
You can repeat stuff until they become part of muscle memory but it's impossible to "develop" somebody into elite player.
Teams like Spurs ( best "development" ?? ) mostly are just smart when it comes to drafting/picking players. They pick player with developed skill(s) and put him in position to use that skill the most. They took guy like Splitter as backup just because he was elite at setting screens in Europe. Guess what- he was elite at setting screens in nba.
Now in 2016 they took Forbes and he can shoot . What a suprise? Guy shot 43,5% for 3 at college. On 750 attemps. Guess what guy can do in nba?

Re: How would you grade our player development?
Depends on which management you are talking about.
hennigan has a good eye for talent. Look at Oladipo, Vuc and Tobias now. Look how they developed.
But he didn't have the patience nor the time to have it come to fruition. He held on to Elfrid too long though. And maybe AG too, remember, Tobias was trade to make room some minutes for AG.
If under WeHam, its too early to see it. They developed two projects basically, and these two projects have Hennigan guys playing in front of them (Vuc and Gordon). Obviously Hengan guys will be better than the projects right now.
