There's a fine line between beast and bust. I've seen nothing to suggest that Stanley's shot selection will improve.

ehh its a watever trade to me stanley's been in detroit for damn near 4 seasons and havent improved his shooting so i didnt see him as a key piece going forward. as for thon maker not sure what the hell we got in him i know he can shoot a lil i'd just rather see him play at the 5 over zaza/leuer.

This deal would have felt better with a second rounder coming back our way as well but when you look at Stanley's shooting numbers it was hard to see anyone giving up much more than this. Hard thing is every once in a while Johnson shows flashes of being a good NBA player but on more nights he looks like he should be out of the league. I wouldn't be surprised if this summer he can't find a contract at more than league minimum or $2 to $3 million a year.

This makes some sense with getting something for an expiring. It really is a roll of the dice to see if change of scenery can help Thon. I am not too confident. It also could be part 1b to another move of a center (Dre/Zaza). IF that is it I hope to god it is for a wing.

I had a soft spot for Stanley and I truly hope he succeeds. He lost his mom right before he played his first season. I think he has the tools and I’ll be cheering for the guy.

My silliness because "Tuna" in French is "Thon".

Doesn't Thon have a longer contract than Stanley?

One more year which would put him in line with everyone else

Yes but it reduces our wiggle room under the luxury tax for next year, though it does increase that wiggle room a little bit this year.

I don't understand.

Pistons trade two solid role players, one of which was a top 10 pick, for two second round picks and scrubs?!?!?! Does not make sense at all.

Thon was a top ten pick a year AFTER Stanley was. Just because you’re drafted high, doesn’t mean you aren’t a scrub.

They both are. Even, though inconsequential trade.

I like it. I don't know what will become of Maker, but I won't have any set expectations for him. I was absolutely done with Johnson. Next up - Jackson???

So the Bullock trade and this one makes two things clear to me.

One, we're not going to sit on cap holds for players we don't see a future with. We knew we couldn't afford Bullock, and didn't want to pay up for Stanley, so there's no reason to be stuck with their cap hits until another team takes them off our hands. That could free us up to be a little more aggressive pursuing quality role players in the off season.

Two, we're starting to establish a timeline. Next year may be a rough one on the court, but we will have a wealth of contracts that potentially expire at the end of the season. Those will be trade bait should anyone good with some years on their contract or RFA status come available next season. They also give us cap relief to either make a move or start the longer term rebuild in earnest.

They just got rid of one of the worst regulars in the NBA. They could of traded SJ for a used condom and it would of been a good deal. This team is way better off without him.

No problem with this trade. Still think SJ could become a solid player, but he hasn't shown much improvement and it could take years. With Thon, we get cheap back-up big for the next couple of years. Wouldn't be surprised to see us trade Zaza to a contender for a 2nd rounder.

Thon makes less than Stanley. I think that tweet was implying that this move combined with the Bullock move means that we have a lot more room under the luxury tax which allows us to chase free agents for the rest of the year.
