Please post if you are UNHAPPY with the GASOL TRADE!

Post#1 » by Useyourhead » Thu Feb 7, 2019 8:31 pm

I was so excited this morning to hear JV is finally back. He has the best TS% on the team, our best rebounder and best screener.

That was short lived as I was refreshing hoping to find a story about us getting BEAL to fix the rest of the team's shooting problems but instead saw a trade that made absolutely NO SENSE! GASOL is an even worse scorer than JV and is much older!

Shooting percentages:
JV leads the team, Even better than Siakam! JV has 58% FG% 64% TS%
https://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/TOR/2019.html#advanced::6
vs. Old man Gasol who shoots horrendously for a big man and has a very mediocre 3pt% @ 34%. Overall 44% FG% 54% TS% Gasol is f'ing number 8 on a **** Memphis team and HE IS A BIG MAN who should be much higher!
https://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/MEM/2019.html#advanced::6

Now let's move on to PER, JV is a much better rebounder too and we need those extra crucial possessions in the playoffs!:

JV # 6 in the league with 24.88 vs OLD MAN GASOL # 32! in the league with 17.28
http://insider.espn.com/nba/hollinger/statistics/_/position/c

I'm a the only one who is not a fan of this trade? Gasol is a poor shooting big man! Yes he can pass but this team's biggest problem is shooting and scoring and we traded our best INTERIOR scorer. How the hell does this trade impact our scoring/offense issues?!

I was generally a fan of Masai but this move WREAKS OF DESPERATION based on other team moves. We did not address our main weakness of shooting with this trade at all. Wha'ts worse is we gave up our only length option at PG with Delon being shipped too. It felt like we saw other teams making a move that actually helped their teams and panicked to make this one. :noway: Very disappointed in Masai. Thought he was better than this. One thing he was able to accomplish was get rid of his original bad CJ signing, at least that's off the books. You think he would learn from trading players near or over 30. Signs of Carroll and CJ were both cunderwhelming. If Gasol gets hurt even before the playoffs begin that will be the biggest insult to injury but almost deserved for treating a 34 year old has been star as if he was 28.

As much as I hate to admit it, agree with Pierce and Tracy

This is how he performed recently against the two likely teams we will see in the playoffs, please do not post his stats vs. teams like the knicks:

Fri 1/18
Vs BOS
L 116-122 36 Minutes 1-10 4 Pts
Wed 1/16
vs MIL
L 101-111 25 Minutes 5-13 14 Pts

I don't think this improves us as a team. We will miss Delon and JV. JV is a better player at this point imo. Oh well hope I am wrong.

This move wasn’t about improving scoring from the C position, it was about adding another playmaker and leader to the team.

Gasol is the 2nd best playmaker on this roster

PER is a bad stat, TS sure, but he shoots 3s, and defense is not even close.

You should look at other advanced metrics if you want to look at numbers.

We traded our best scorer? Maybe actually watch a game, instead of just looking at statistics and evaluating a player. Context is everything. Gasol and JV had very different roles, and stats are going to reflect that. Gasol is a way better, higher BBIQ player than JV.
I'll miss JV, but we are getting back a better player.

I hear there’s some pretty cheap one-way flights to Memphis right now...for anyone who is upset.

Just be happy that you can turn the tv on a few nights a week and see a version of jv who gets all the minutes and touches that he wants.

Upgraded hugely in basketball IQ and defence. Kind of important things in the playoffs.

This is a big risk trade for me. Gasol could opt out at the end of the year and we'll have given up Delon and JV for virtually nothing.

We have a very thin squad now so I expect there to be more pickups in the next month on the buyout market, so it will be easier to evaluate in a few weeks.

Definitely a HUGE RISK, especially if GASOL gets hurt before the playoffs even BEGIN!

Delon was gone regardless, we weren't going to be able to sign him. JV has another year but he's not a make or break player.

This move didn't give up anything in our future or our two best prospects for a vet leader that can shoot the three ball with a high basketball iq. If Gasol opts in, we have three vets on expiring deals that will be very attractive next year at the deadline for us to get some picks and prospects.

Masai went all in for this season, got us an MVP level player and only gave up one FRP in real future asset in that pick which will be a bottom FRP this summer. That's it. We're contending this year and still can rebuild very very quickly if Kawhi leaves. In 2020, we'll have so much capspace.

JV is trash on defense..he's useless against the Celtics and Bucks.
