The AthleticWhy Hawks stayed quiet at deadline and addressing potential buyouts plus Fultz interest
The NBA trade deadline came and went Thursday without Dedmon having to uproot his life. The same goes for Jeremy Lin, Kent Bazemore or Taurean Prince, who were all shopped around by the Hawks.
Tyler Dorsey...requested a trade out of Atlanta because he wanted a chance for more playing time.
According to sources, Lin was expected to be moved. It didn’t happen after there wasn’t much interest in acquiring his $12-plus million salary for a backup guard. It turned out the interest in Lin prior to the deadline was a bit exaggerated.
Teams were interested in acquiring Dedmon, the Hawks starting center, but none of the teams wanted to include a second-round pick, which matched Schlenk’s goal of acquiring future compensation.
Schlenk did say he listened to numerous pitches but ended up not trading any of the key contributors because the teams didn’t match the Hawks’ goals of future financial flexibility and future draft compensation. Atlanta was not interested in trading for any picks in this year’s draft.
Schlenk said. “We have five picks in this year’s draft. We feel like even adding five rookies to the team next year might be too many."
The team did receive calls about Prince and Bazemore, but talks never seriously progressed with either player.

No trade better than a bad trade.

Bleacher ReportGrading Every NBA Team's 2019 Trade Deadline Performance
Zach Buckley
Atlanta Hawks
Grade: D
Added: Jabari Bird, Shelvin Mack, cash
Traded: Tyler Dorsey, top-55 protected second-round pick
Uh, this is it? Cash for helping the Celtics trim costs—Bird will be waived, per Wojnarowski, as will Mack, per Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution—and nothing else? No prospects or picks to eventually help John Collins, Trae Young and Kevin Huerter whenever they're ready to compete?
Dewayne Dedmon, Jeremy Lin and Vince Carter should've all interested contenders as rentals. Kent Bazemore and Taurean Prince would've worked for anyone in the three-and-D market. While it's unclear what specifically was available for them, the names buzzed loudly enough to know the Hawks could have—and should have—recouped some kind of forward-focused assets.

Carter is here for reasons other than playing basketball (post-career opps). If he wanted to be on a "contender" that's where he would've signed in the first place.

1. It still could happen
2. He seems content here and we like having him in the locker room

Unless he asks for his release, he'll be here.
My guess is as soon as the season is over, he'll be moving across the street to TNT and NBATV for guest appearances during the playoffs.

Yea, you don't willfully choose to sign in Sacramento and Atlanta after if your goal is to chase a ring. An analyst gig in the home base of NBATV and/or honing his coaching chops mentoring young players seems preferable to golf clapping on the bench after every made Durant 3.

But is it better than pretending not to look when Draymond goes in on another teammate just to avoid him going in on you next?

Vince is the type to smile while on the bench only to attack Draymond with a sock full of soap bars when he thought he was alone in the steam room. Just ask SMitch, dem Central Florida boyz a different kind of crazy because... Florida.

Good point. There's a reason the "Florida man" meme was born.
Mrs. kg is a FL gurl too so .... trust me, I know.

Back to this - Not even one 2nd for Dedmon. But Mirotic got 4 2nds????
I hope Dedmon doesn't get bought out. Can't make it this easy on teams. He set the precedent last season with Beli and Illy, can't do the same this year.

Re: Why Hawks stayed quiet at deadline
Sure, if there were no offers of even a 2nd round pick. Why trade away good chemistry among our team just to hear their name on ESPN?

I don't really mind that Baze, Dedmon, and Lin are still here. I just want to see Schlenk ace a trade at some point.

He chose and is still choosing to be here. He's not a hostage.

I feel like Schlenk should have gotten better offers than second round picks for some of our guys so from that perspective I'm not impressed.
However, if the reported offers are accurate he made the right call not to make a bad move just for the sake of activity.

Bazemore is likely going to be a Hawks lifer. His contract won't be moved this offseason and we need a starting SF since Prince will likely be moved in the offseason.
Lin might be here next year.
I seriously doubt Dedmon will be here next year. We need a real legit center. Not two backups like we have right now.

Why would anyone want to give for Dedmon. There are so many middling centers in the NBA for like 3 million dollars or less. The average to below average center market is elite right now. Cost is at an all time low. No one wanted anything for him, they wanted him for free.
Lin is a quality backup PG making 13 mil. The salary was too hard to match and the offers for him were trash.
No one wants to trade a bad contract and a 1st for Bazemore and we don't want to take a bad contract for a 2nd just to trade Baze. We don't have attractive pieces outside of the youngins. Prince is attractive but we want a future 1st and a quality young player and teams aren't going to trade that right now.

The Athleticthe Hawks will not buy their contracts out unless specifically requested to do so. If Lin and Dedmon decide they would rather play for a team contending for the playoffs or they are just not happy, Schlenk will send them on their way.
Dedmon made his intentions known Thursday after a 119-101 loss to Toronto that he plans on playing the rest of the season with the Hawks.
“It’s good to know that I’ll be here for the rest of the year,” Dedmon said. “It’s definitely comforting. Whether I was traded or if it didn’t happen, I would’ve been ready for whatever. I’m happy to be here. I have a bond with a bunch of the players on the team.”
