So much inconsistent effort. Does this guy even love basketball? If he played with just 75% of the intensity of Holmes he'd be dominating the opposition. I don't think he'll ever play with the heart or passion of someone like Doncic.

Right now he looks closer to Enes Kanter than Hakeem.

Who was it that said they played basketball (or some other sports) because they were good at it and could make a lot of money from it but not because they loved it?

I kinda get that vibe from Ayton. He likes being on a team, he likes the idea of playing a child's game that would pay him millions and he's luckily naturally gifted enough to be NBA talent but basketball isn't something he necessarily loves. If there is an issue, it's probably that he won't reach the heights we expect he could get to just because he doesn't have the passion for it to work on his craft.

But it is true that some GREAT players have played basketball not because his love for the game since their early years, but because their incredible physical conditions.

Shaq is the first one that comes to my mind but I am pretty sure that there are a lot of other examples.

Hopefully Ayton, like other physical specimen who arrived to basketball because their tremendous body, can fall in love with the game and work hard because of money AND love for the game....not only because of money.

That can make a big difference in the long run.

No, Enes is at the least aggressive on offense!

He followed that statement up by discussing his ability to defend guards. Didn't discuss his offense at all.

Was a little strange to hear that he's yet to talk to Hakeem or KG. You'd think someone would have facilitated a discussion with one or both of them by now.

I like Ayton, had him as the clear 2 on my big board last year and so far he's about what I expected his rookie year. I do worry a little bit that he could end up being a coach/teammate killer though. Not because he's a bad dude, he seems like a nice enough guy but more so because he could be one of those guys that just always leaves you wanting for more. One theme I've noticed with his biggest supporters even back to his college days is it's always the coach/system and players around him fault for him not being the player they think he can be. And it wouldn't surprise me if an organization felt the same way and starts chasing that right fit to unlock his upside. There could be some truth to their claims but it also could be true that he's a really good player who frustrates you a little bit because it appears that he could be a great player.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a Ride!-H.S.T.

Ayton looks up to Lauri Markkanen. He said that the #1 reason why he chose Arizona bc of Lauri Markkanen playing for U of A the year before.

So, I'm not surprised that he doesn't consider himself to be a bigman. He always talked about his sf/sg skills even in interviews during his college days.

Great, so he doesn’t consider himself a big man but yet was making self comparisons to Shaq pre draft...just to get drafted #1 overall?

Awesome.

And ugh Lauri Markannen...another one the Suns screwed the pooch on. Imagine this roster with Booker, Markannen and Doncic as it’s big 3....

Well, Mavs already did above for Doncic, I surely hope the Suns do it for Deandre.

Some people will always find a reason to complain, even when a guy puts 23/12 dominating the paint in a close game against the title favorites.

That Ayton doesn’t consider himself a big man? Eh maybe eventually it will be but not there yet.

This is just talk, of course he is a big man, 23 on mostly dunks and 12rbs speaks for it well enough.

If a GM thought he's a Shaq then he should be fired immediately.

Also not sure why you will be upset if he actually thinks it, as half of the people on this board want to turn him into a 3 point shooter, most probably you are one of them.

Right after the draft and joining the suns, he did say that he considers himself strictly a Center now and going forward, Igor might have got in his ear a bit, so its puzzling to hear him say he's "not a big man". I didn't actually listen to the radio interview though, just going by what you guys are saying.

EDIT: OK I just listened to it, sounds to me like he's trying to explain his versatility more than anything.

Being able to shoot 3s doesn’t disqualify one being a big man.

Many of the best bigs in the game such as Embiid, Jokic, Towns etc all take 3pt attempts and still consider themselves very much a big man.
