In terms of which areas to consider, some may be based on your age ... this is based on my perception as an older person, others may disagree on my descriptions ...
The Tempe area (Mill Avenue) is going to be more college oriented since it in very close to Arizona State University with the majority of patrons being on the younger side. It definitely going to be more culturally diverse because ASU attracts students from all over the world.
Old Town Scottsdale area is going to a mix of young and old patrons. Definitely a shopping destination with lots of boutiques, art galleries, and such. It gonna be more upscale and the prices for food and drinks are gonna be higher here. I've always thought of it as a tourist trap.
Central Phoenix (uptown) is more laid back environment with a good mix of young and old folks. Some shopping nearby at the Biltmore and close to Downtown. I guess thats why I recommended it
Honestly all three are worth the visit if you are going to be in the area for several days.

One thing as you travel the Southwest United States is you will see quite the population of homeless people that time of year since the weather is quite nice in November. Sometimes they will be on every major intersection or corner holding signs asking for money and/or food. Its a quite a sad state of affairs that definitely wasn't as bad a problem when I was a kid growing up in Phoenix.

I am up for my first Suns game after being a fan for 26 years...so if you go to the games and see a crying 250lbs guy - that's me
PM me if you want some help with hotels. I work for a large US chain. We have a newly renovated property a couple minutes walk from the stadium. I should be able to help you with a good rate.

One good thing about the Biltmore area if he is hiking..is if he stays near there it is very close to Squaw Peak (or whatever it's name is now) and only a few miles from Camelback.

Re: OT: Need your Help :)
I still haven’t figured out my itinerary for the day on Saturday. As it appears, my only option for a flight back to DC is shortly after midnight after the LA game. This means I don’t need a hotel for Sat, but screws with my hiking plans as I will have no option for a shower and change of clothes before the game. On another note, I will have some time to kill after the LA game before my flight, so if anyone wants to join me for a quick beer near the arena, I’ll be glad to meet a fellow Suns fan. I will try to get my tickets and hotel reservations today, so I will know more tomorrow.
Thanks once again to all of you!
