Better Piston Coach - SVG or Casey?

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Wed Feb 13, 2019 4:56 pm

We have a decent sample size now. Putting aside the GM moves, who has been the better coach for the Pistons? (Disregard their coaching with other teams).
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

A good part of me believes if we had SVG this season, we'd have a better record right now but its impossible to say for certain. Seems like he didn't get a real chance to implement Blake. Casey has for sure ran too much ISO Blake on offense and our offense has at times been very predictable. One thing is for sure, that many of the players were happy to see SVG go and for 75% of coaches a player is only going to listen for so long after years of not winning so perhaps even though they are pretty equal in their coaching abilities I think Casey at least has being a fresh new voice going for him.

I think SVG is the better x's and o's coach but his style wears one one quickly. Casey is more a leader of men type, but Masai forced Nurse on him for a reason.

I voted Casey but honestly I think our record would be about the same with SVG. Both have flaws but different types of flaws. The real issue is not with SVG or Casey though but with our talent. Our perimeter play has been bottom of the barrel this season. If we had better personnel we would be a better team with Casey or with SVG.

The team quit on SVG. And he was awful. The team hasn't quit on Casey, but he's terrible, too. I'll take option C.

Don’t know what else Casey is supposed to do with this roster. I’ll take the guy who isn’t an arrogant stubborn hard ass.

The biggest head-scratcher about Casey is his befuddling insistence on gifting significant minutes to Jose's Cauldron which, going by both numbers & eye test, had probably cost us a few games. Stubborn loyalty, blind spot, whatever we want to call it, it's been a maddeningly frustrating & indefensible knock on him.

SVG is a much better coach than Casey. As someone else has already said, Masai forced great offensive and defensive coordinators on Casey for a reason.

I think they are both good coaches who were working with a horribly flawed roster. We can blame SVG's hand in that, but the roster was even worse before he came. They have vastly different pedagogies. SVG's is more coach-centered and Casey's is more player-centered. I think there are few people in the NBA who have the knowledge and understanding of the game as SVG, but he ruins it by not letting anyone help him out with his blind spots. Casey empowers players more but definitely has some blind spots of his own.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

Pretty reasonable take. SVG is more technically sound, but I'd rather complain about Casey's X's and O's than how SVG lost the locker room. Neither is a particularly great spot to be, but if you surround Casey with strong assistants and good players he can lead them. You surround SVG with whomever you want and he'll still find a way to lose his team.

Still, it was SVG the GM who doomed this team far more than SVG the coach and we don't truly know how much of a hand Gores had in that. Maybe a little. Maybe a lot. *shrug*

SVG the coach was good but outdated.

Casey is average, but more flexible.

Casey is the right coach for now. After SVG we need a players coach to nurture Drummond, who's potentially our biggest impact player but is flakey af, and our other young players. If we get close in the next few seasons and a foundation is set we can always shift out Casey ala Golden State with Mark Jackson.

SVG didn't have Blake for a meaningful amount of time, and likewise, Casey didn't have the kind of depth that SVG had.

SVG's 2015-2016 pistons roster was alot better than this roster with better shooters and a better bench if we didnt face the cavs in the 1st round we probably would've won a few playoff games for sure.

Who are Casey's deputies? Personally hand-picked by him, I assume? Anybody of note? Who steps up in Casey's place if for whatever reason he isn't available?

Casey is like the definition of that player’s coach that everyone loves even when the games just aren’t going as well as you think it should. They still huddle up with him.

SVG just had no player connection at all and just grates on you. But he does have better out of timeout plays and schemes which fit better for talents. I wish he had someone like Lillard or Conley since he is a PG whisperer and gets the most out of their talents. He’s less of a big man coach than he is a guard coach IMO. People point to Dwight as his calling card, but I think Dwight would’ve been great regardless of who was coaching.

I’ll actually disagree and say Stan had some of the worst crunch time in bound plays of all time. So many second timeouts and 5 second calls over his tenure. I actually like what Casey draws up for his last plays.

What is better - A karate chop to the throat or a kick in the balls?
