Input Needed: Mock Draft Lottery Rough Draft

Post#1 » by NYG » Mon Feb 18, 2019 8:25 pm

Before I go deep into the 2019 Mock Off-Season, I just want to see if there's anything I'm way off on during the initial stages.

Here is my final 2018-19 NBA Standings and resulting NBA Playoffs:

1. Toronto Raptors
2. Golden State Warriors
3. Milwaukee Bucks
4. Denver Nuggets
5. Philadelphia 76ers
6. Boston Celtics
7. Oklahoma City Thunder
8. Utah Jazz
9. Houston Rockets
10. Portland Trail Blazers
11. San Antonio Spurs
12. Indiana Pacers
13. Los Angeles Lakers
14. Sacramento Kings
15. Brooklyn Nets
16. Los Angeles Clippers
17. Detroit Pistons
18. Orlando Magic
19. Miami Heat
20. Minnesota Timberwolves
21. Charlotte Hornets
22. New Orleans Pelicans
23. Dallas Mavericks
24. Washington Wizards
25. Memphis Grizzlies
26. Chicago Bulls
27. Atlanta Hawks
28. Cleveland Cavaliers
29. Phoenix Suns
30. New York Knicks

NBA Playoffs

Warriors over Lakers in four
Rockets over Jazz in seven
Thunder over Trail Blazers in six
Nuggets over Spurs in six
Raptors over Magic in four
Celtics over Pacers in five
76ers over Nets in four
Bucks over Pistons in six

Warriors over Rockets in six
Nuggets over Thunder in seven
Raptors over Celtics in six
Bucks over 76ers in seven

Warriors over Nuggets in six
Raptors over Bucks in seven

Warriors over Raptors in six

As a result, I believe the following coaching changes would be made:

Trail Blazers fire Terry Stotts and hire Stan Van Gundy
-After a first round playoff exit, the Trail Blazers decide to go with more of a coaching veteran.

Spurs Gregg Popovich retires and they hire Ettore Messina
-Once Popovich retires, the Spurs decide to go with Messina who has spent a few years in training.

Lakers fire Luke Walton and hire John Calipari
-LeBron will want Walton out and want his guy in. Calipari helps the Lakers cause in terms of recruiting big name free agents.

Pelicans fire Alvin Gentry and hire Monty Williams
-Monty Williams and the Pelicans have been through a lot since his last head coaching stint there, but he has the right demeanor to lead a rebuild in New Orleans.

Wizards fire Scott Brooks and hire Tony Bennett
-Bennett will instill a defensive culture in the Wizards and teach toughness whether they all out rebuild or simply retool.

I used Tankathon to simulate the draft lottery results and they replaced the teams with my teams in the same standings.

The Tankathon results were:

1. Cavaliers (3rd Worst Team At Time Of Simulation)
2. Knicks (2nd Worst Team At Time of Simulation)
3. Suns (1st Worst Team At Time of Simulation)
4. Wizards (7th Worst Team At Time of Simulation)

The Results Using My Standings:

1. Cleveland Cavaliers (3rd Worst)
2. Phoenix Suns (2nd Worst)
3. New York Knicks (1st Worst)
4. Washington Wizards (7th Worst)

NBA Draft Trades (As of Draft Lottery)

(Completed July 1st) Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart, Robert Williams, 14th Overall Draft Pick, 2020 Memphis Grizzlies Conditional First Round Draft Pick and 2020 Los Angeles Clippers Conditional First Round Draft Pick for Anthony Davis
-Celtics add a superstar in Anthony Davis without totally dismantling their roster and still being able to compete even if Kyrie leaves with Al Horford/Terry Rozier/Jaylen Brown
-The Pelicans will not get a better offer than this from any one else. The ceiling of this offer is just too high if you're going to trade AD either way.

Jrue Holiday and 9th Overall Draft Pick for Tyler Johnson and 2nd Overall Draft Pick
-Suns need a veteran to lead the development of all of their young talent more than another young talent. They add a solid leader that fits well on the court while maintaing a top 10 pick.
-Pelicans add Barrett to Tatum which is a great young wind duo.

Mike Conley for Andrew Wiggins and 11th Overall Draft Pick
-Conley is a solid veteran point guard that could really help take Towns to the next level.
-Wiggins is a super expensive flier during a rebuild around JJJ, but adding a second lottery pick and dumping Conley's contract outgoing makes it worth it.

Taurean Prince (absorbed in TPE) and 5th Overall Draft Pick for 7th Overall Draft Pick and 11th Overall Draft Pick
-Hawks get two picks in addition to the Mavericks pick to give them 3 in the top 11 for Taurean Prince and dropping two spots in the draft.
-Grizzlies add Prince to Wiggins for wing depth, but more importantly they jump the Bulls for Darius Garland.

1. Cleveland Cavaliers - Zion Williamson
2. New Orleans Pelicans (via Phoenix Suns) - R.J. Barrett
3. New York Knicks - Ja Morant
4. Washington Wizards - Cam Reddish
5. Memphis Grizzlies (via Atlanta Hawks) - Darius Garland
6. Chicago Bulls - Romeo Langford
7. Atlanta Hawks (via Memphis Grizzlies) - Nassir Little
8. Atlanta Hawks (via Dallas Mavericks) - Bol Bol
9. Phoenix Suns (via New Orleans Pelicans) - Jarrett Culver
10. Charlotte Hornets - Jontay Porter
11. Atlanta Hawks (via Minnesota Timberwolves) - Sekou Doumbouya
12. Miami Heat - Brandon Clarke
13. Los Angeles Clippers - Jaxson Hayes
14. New Orleans Pelicans (via Sacramento Kings) - De'Andre Hunter

A few questions here...

1. Which big names would still get traded that haven’t yet? (Ie Lowry with Kawhi gone, Draymond with Klay/KD gone, etc.)

2. Where do the next group of free agents sign?
1. Khris Middleton (PO)
2. D’Angelo Russell (RFA)
3. Eric Bledsoe
4. Marc Gasol (PO)
5. Julius Randle (PO)

3. Which team would take Danilo Gallinari’s salary in full and for what compensation? 2021 Heat 1st?

4. Where do the two best teams (Raptors and Warriors) go from here after losing KD, Klay and Kawhi?

5. What is the Lakers next step after signing Cousins?

I’m thinking Lowry, Draymond and Beal are the biggest names traded.

2. Where do the next group of free agents sign?
1. Khris Middleton, Opts Out, Signs With Nets
2. D’Angelo Russell, Signs with Nets
3. Eric Bledsoe, Signs with Bucks
4. Marc Gasol, Opts In
5. Julius Randle, Opts Out, Signs with Mavericks

3. Which team would take Danilo Gallinari’s salary in full and for what compensation? 2021 Heat 1st?

I could see Atlanta doing it.

4. Where do the two best teams (Raptors and Warriors) go from here after losing KD, Klay and Kawhi?

Raptors probably outright rebuild (trade Lowry, Gasol) and Warriors retool (trade Draymond, help other teams dump useful veteran salary for assets)

5. What is the Lakers next step after signing Cousins?

I can’t figure it out yet, but some kind of Beal trade?

They all seem pretty plausible, but some can be considered a reach as well.

Kevin Durant leaving his situation to just play with Kyrie and no Davis? Seems unlikely.

Philadelphia offering BOTH Jimmy and Tobias 5 yr deals seems hard to believe. I don't think neither gets a 5 yr deal.

Everything else looks good (even though I cringe giving Vucevic a 4 yr deal, but seems Orlando like to do so and retain his services).

Lowry for Kennard, Leuer, Jackson and ‘20 1st?

Beal for Ingram, Ball, Hart, 18th Overall and ‘20 1st? Ingram and Ball forwarded for highest draft pick possible? For example, the Bulls at 6 maybe prefer Ball and Ingram?

Essentially...

Hart, 6th, 18th and ‘20 Lakers 1st to Washington
Ball and Ingram to Chicago
Beal to the Lakers

??

I have no idea what Draymond deal makes sense, probably better off keeping him and dumping Iguodala/Livingston to sign Middleton to a big deal.

I know this was the report right after the trade, and maybe this is just wishful thinking by me? But it's hard for me to see Kristaps playing for less than $5M gtd when he can lock up what 30x that? Especially with his injury history.

If he doesn't want to be in Dallas long-term I think the play is to still take the money and then work to get traded, not give up all the money. Right?

Part of me thinks him and his camp wants a free agent recruitment and the ego stroke that goes with it to end up where he really feels comfortable. Not saying it won’t be Dallas, but the Knicks wouldn’t have traded some one as good as KP if his camp was not dillusional.

Updated Lottery and Top 20 Added...

NBA Draft Trades (As of Draft Lottery)

1. Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart, Robert Williams, 14th Overall Draft Pick, 2020 Memphis Grizzlies Conditional First Round Draft Pick and 2020 Los Angeles Clippers Conditional First Round Draft Pick for Anthony Davis

3. Bradley Beal for Kevin Knox, Dennis Smith Jr., Frank Ntilikina, Lance Thomas and 3rd Overall Draft Pick
-Knicks at this point would be confident of their ability to make good use of their two MAX slots still remaining in cap space.
-The Wizards won't top this deal for Beal and would have to take it on pure value alone.

Grizzlies add Prince to Wiggins for wing depth, but more importantly they jump the Bulls for Darius Garland.

6. Marvin Williams for Allen Crabbe and 27th Overall Draft Pick
-Nets create additional cap space while filling a need with Marvin Williams.
-Hornets likely stretch Crabbe, but take on the extra salary for the chance at an asset.

1. Cleveland Cavaliers - Zion Williamson
2. New Orleans Pelicans (via Phoenix Suns) - R.J. Barrett
3. Washington Wizards (via New York Knicks) - Ja Morant
4. Washington Wizards - Cam Reddish

15. Orlando Magic - Keldon Johnson
16. Detroit Pistons - KZ Okpala
17. Brooklyn Nets - Rui Hachimura
18. Los Angeles Lakers - Nickeil Alexander-Walker
19. Indiana Pacers - Coby White
20. San Antonio Spurs - Goga Bitadze

A couple of thoughts...

I’m guessing that Boston doesn’t make the AD trade if Kyrie leaves. They would just role with Tatum, Rozier, Brown, Smart, etc....

I thinks the Jrue trade is legit and should happen.

I think the Bucks bring everyone back. Middleton can be in a better situation with Milwaukee than he can with Nets. I think Milwaukee even gives him up to the max.

I think AD is such a singular talent, the Celtics would trade for him regardless and figure the rest out later.

Can the Bucks afford to re-sign every one? I could see them opting for a poor man’s Middleton for less salary

If they get Kyrie & Durant, I would keep the 3rd pick and trade DSJ, & the 2nd rd pk for a vet, resign Thomas for vet min.
Would also resign Noah Vonleh & see what the cost to keep DJ. My 3rd pk would be Reddish.
