There’s no Billy King there but as much as I hate Boston sports, the best stance to take is gathering assets before striking. Indiana did it too to a lesser extent (although nobody expected Victor Oladipo to really break out like he did), although it was because George wanted out.
Collins and Zion would be unlikely to work but in the complete fantasyland that Atlanta actually draws the #1 pick (as I KNOW that nobody will be trading for #1 in 2019, that’s going to be impossible without an idiotic offer given Zion’s hype, which yes, it’s warranted but still), you play them together to see FIRST. Then you make your moves.
You can potentially build with Collins as your 4 man but the 5 is going to have to be a guy that can defend in space. That’s not a problem, he’s a bonafide, legit starting PF.
I don't disagree. You can always play them together and see what happens. My point is just are you trying to make a nice playoff team or a championship team. IF Collins becomes Amare (which has to be best case scenario), can he be the second best player on a ship team? Definitely not. What about third best, ok that's a maybe. And then who are the two players better than him, maybe we have Young on the roster, there's no one else that's a stud that's for sure. Gotta nail this draft and more.
We can just wait and be loyal to Collins then give him the max or trade him when his value is very clear in 1-2 years, that's what teams always do. Then we'll be happy to be in playoffs where we can get bounced in the first or second round for another 4-5 years before we do this again.
