to me the choice is obvious. If you want the packers to get to the super bowl once or twice more in Aaron's career, you make an effort to get A.B. That effort is the 30th pick at minimum.
If you are fine with winning 6-10 games every year, pass the opportunity by.

So the only way the Packers make the Super Bowl is by trading at least a 1st for an aging wr that is a headcase off the field?

I'd give a 3rd for AB, about as far as I'd go.

If the price is right, we should take a look at Rodney Gunter for DLine depth. He had more productivity this past year than his previous 3 years combined. May have been due to a coaching change maximizing his potential.

OFF-SEASON MOCK

FREE AGENCY Begins with the first of several times decision are made on who comes and who goes. The latter can be very difficult as bonds and loyalties formed between players and fans and players and coaches are severed inevitably with the phrase “it is a business”. The start of FA is like watching a shark feeding frenzy. The hunt is on for a few guys who are high level performers or projected to be, to provide an upgrade filling a starting positions. There is great pressure to make a deal quickly before another team and get to the next one. Make a mistake and your team can suffer payroll consequences. FA can also be used to build depth to step in when a starter goes down, his backup can maintain a high level of play. Since FA money quickly goes to the stars, salaries for depth is frugally spent. These are the veterans in the latter part of their career with valuable years of experience who still have gas in the tank for 2 maybe 3 years. This FA mock is clear what it offers.- Pass Rushers and Safties and maybe some OL depth. But first clear out the clutter
Packer’s Release: Cobb, Graham, Bulaga, Perry, Kendricks, Lewis, Spriggs, Kizer
Packer’s Resign:
Baushaud Breeland, 27, CB, a great mid-season pick up with versatility that blended well.
Mohammed Wilkerson,29, DL- on another 1 year prove it contract.
Clay Matthews, 33, if he returns he will play inside and out and where-ever Pettine cooks up. I have a hunch Clay enjoyed working with Pettine. Will Clay be excited enough to accept playing for 1/3 of his previous salary?
Packer’s Retain:
Tramon Williams, 36, - at FS or in the Slot - whether a starter or key back-up to almost any DB position - Tramon still is a contributor on the field and impeccable in the locker room as a leader and a mentor. But IF his salary space is needed to complete some home-run deal then - it is a business

SIGNING UFAs:
This year there is a bountiful number of pass-rushers both in the college ranks, and in this FA class. So I attempt to satisfy the pass-rush need by signing several emerging and veteran insuring the outside pass rush gets addressed regardless how the draft falls. This also gives more flexibility during the draft itself. There are also some very good safties to be had.
Za’darius Smith, 26, OLB, Redskins - coming off a career year in Baltimore (60 pressures, 8.5 sacks) is a very physical and explosive player. He's hard to get into when he uses his 6-foot-4 length. With good moves and an attitude coaches covet, Smith racked up 8.5 sacks last season, and Pro Football Focus had him with 17 quarterback hits and 33 hurries. He's the type of player who can bring a defense to the next level.
Preston Smith, 26, OLB, Chiefs - played in every game the last 4 years recording 29 tackles for loss and 24.5 sacks during that span. His best season 2017 posted 42 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 8 sacks, 2 interceptions and 3 passes defended.
Adrian Amos, 25, SS, Bears, fast, set career highs in interceptions (two), pass break-ups (seven) and tackles (73) in 2018, all while playing the highest percentage of snaps (97.7 percent) of anyone on Vic Fangio’s defense. He’s proven to be a largely durable player in his four years in Chicago, playing over 1,000 snaps twice (2015, 2018) Amos and Eddie Jackson played off each other well, with Jackson fitting as a rangy ball-hawk and Amos a physical in-the-box type who’s adept against the run. Sounds like Amos would pair Well with:
Tre Boston, 25, FS His passionate attitude and ability to make plays played a huge role in the secondary. Boston was Pro Football Focus’ No. 1 FS in coverage, allowing just one reception every 193.7 coverage snaps. He ranked No. 9 in the NFL with an 87.8 coverage grade. He played 1,039-of-1,047 snaps, which was the most snaps of anyone on the unit. will be much cheaper.
Brandon Graham, Edge, 31, Eagles – Over the past 3 seasons, Graham has recorded 19 sacks, 105 tackles, and 47 quarterback hits while playing in 47 of a possible 48 games. He’s on the older side, but has a few good years left in him.
Luke Stocker, 30, TE, Tennessee Titans: Veteran tight end played in all 16 games for LaFleur in 2018. Good hands as a receiver and provides value as an inline blocker. Reliable. Graded out highly at Pro Football Focus last season.
Kevin Pamphile, 28, OL, Tennessee Titans: Former 5th-round pick of the Buccaneers signed a 1-year deal in Tennessee last season. He started games for LaFleur at both left tackle and right tackle before landing on injured reserve just three weeks into 2018. Experienced at guard and tackle.
Josh Walker, 28, OL, Former Packer who started four games at left tackle for the Jaguars last season. Previously played guard and could handle snaps at right tackle.
Ty Nsekhe, 33, OL, is a player other teams will want — something the Redskins knew last year when hitting him with a second-round tender Nsekhe was clutch playing in place of Trent Williams this season, even ending up as the team’s highest-graded player during a game.

If these player’s salaries total more money than GB has to spend under the cap - deleting Amos would take care of it.
The FA’s haul leaves the draft to resupply a badly depleted OL and TE position and finally get some help at ILB. A little added depth in the 2ndary would be nice.. My prep tells me its here!

THE NFL COLLEGE DRAFT

TRADES- up to recently rarely involved players and as a matter of practice only involved draft picks. But the younger generation of GM’s have started making more player deals. I welcome and expect them to become more frequent.

1) ----------- GB gives 1.12 / 1200
WASHINGTON gives 1.15, 2.46 = / 1050+440 = 1490

2) ---------- GB gives 1.30 & 2.46 / 620+440 = 1060
CLEVELAND gives 1.17 & 3.75 / 950+215 = 1165
Packers want to move their second 1st rd selection to an earlier iposition n the draft order. It will cost 105 points.

3) ----------- GB gives 3.75 4.107 5.139 6.171 = 2.55 / 2I5+80+36+22= 353
HOUSTON Turns 1 pick into 4, to get as, TT use to say, more bites of the apple.” Boy I am glad he’s gone.

DRAFT
1.15 – OT Johan Williams
1.17 - TE TJ Hockenson
2.44 - G Chris Lindstrom
2.55 - ILB Matt Wilson
4.111 - CB Rock Ya Sin

SS Amos / Jones / Breeland / Greene
FS Boston / Williams

SPECIAL TEAMS
need to begin to deliver special results

If thd draft proves out, the OL is in great shape for years as both RT & RG should be settled with Williams & Lindstrom.. Behind them Vets Pamphile & Nsekhe mentor the rooks and provide reliable depth at all spots but C. At LG Walker & Patrick push Taylor as he did not play as well as the year before. McKinley can play all but LT.- He and Patrick compete for reserve C.
TE – Hockenson gives Rodgers a target he will be excited about. Hockenson is an outstanding receiver and an enthusiastic blocker which will help the run game. Backup Stoker is solid blocker & reliable receiver. Toyon is a project.
WR – DaVante is the real deal and having Hock chewing up coverage in the middle Adams will be even more dangerous. With game experience as rookies with Aaron under their belts, their 2nd camp should make our tall, fast EQ & MVS dangerous weapons in Rodgers hands or rather arm. Fan fav Jake Kumerow could stick. Then there is last year’s 4th Jvon.Moore who has yet to show up. Hope is Davis returns as the return guy.
Aaron Jones is potentially one of the most dynamic backs in the league with a shiftiness and ability to make impossible change of direction cuts. All he has to do is be able to be on the field gaining yards instead of rehabbing another injury. Willams is a solid inside runner, good receiver and tough blocker.

Defense in the NFL is becoming less about the traditional positions and creating more hybridization. GB’s Def.Coor. Pettine showed his ability to do just that as Pack was 3rd in sacks even without a single dominant rusher. Instead Pettine sent pressure from every position. That “coming from anywhere” strategy will still be employed but will be enhanced by the addition of FA Edge rushers, Z & Pres Smith, Graham, and Kyle Fackrell - the lone outside holdover who rose from what seemed a dead career and was the leader in sacks last year. The return of an outside rush will add to the pressure created last seasons by the already strong interior rush. Starting with rising star Clark and gritty talented Mike Daniels - the interrior was ours.. Wilkerson looked good for 3 games until injured should get another chance. His injury may have caused Pack to come up with mid season discoveries - Lancastor and Brown - now entering their 2nd year. Former 3rd rd. pick, Montravious Adams needs to get it going. The neglected ILB unit welcomes 2ND round rookie Mack Wilson who is aggressive vs the run and exceptional in pass coverage. Teamed with Martinez, ILB is looking good and then consider last year’s 3rd pick Uren Burks can hopefully get some inspiration from a sophomore jump. With this personnel if Matthews sticks around he’ll be playing situational everywhere. I think he and Pettine would have loads of fun coming up with new ways to bring pressure and that will entice Clay. The Pack may have finally put together a soon to be dominant secondary. Corners Alexander and King played the best receivers and did very well but King has to stay healthy. A great mid-season addition from last year Baushauld Breeland played very well when King couldn’t. Former 2nd Jackson has been poor so far – thank you Lord he wasn’t the 1st pick as many mocked. Like ILB Burk, just maybe the light will come on for Jackson. Safety is completely revamped with FA signings of Tre Boston at FS and former Bear Adrian Amos at SS looking strong in tackling and coverage. Another past 2nd pick S Josh Jones still seems viable if he can put it together – maybe as a hybrid S-LB that Burks was drafted to be. Venerable veteran Williams still has some to give and after moving to S - now seems destine to serve as the Nickel. Also Brown & Redmond & Greene showing skill ready to go if Jackson & Jones are not.

These guys need to show up or risk being shown the door
2018 2nd rd CB Josh ackson
2018 3rd rd ILB – Uren Burks
2017 2nd rd SS - Josh Jones
2017 3rd rd DL Montravious Adams
They represent football's most valuable comodity and currency – each season’s top 3 draft picks are the fount of eternal youth, and it appears from this group that GB is squandering its resources. Pack needs to hit on their FAs to catch up.

Summary of new players -
13 players - 9 FA & 4rookies - 8 probable starters –1 possible starter, & 4 reserves;
three pass rushers -2-26 yr old starters and 1 30 yr old backup;
two starting Safties - both 25 ;
five OL- two starting rookies on the right side, one 28 vet FA competing on the left side, and two veteran backups - 33 & 28
two TEs - one starting 1st rd rookie and a 30 yr old vet backup.
A 2nd rd rookie likely to be ILB starter with high potential to be impact player!.

And then AaronRodgers and a backup!

While I appreciate the effort that you made in your post I must say that mock offseason is both bad and unrealistic at the same time. I wont go into too much detail about everything so I'll simply surmise the key points

For one you have A LOT of money being spent on free agency without getting too much bang from your buck. Realistically the oline only gains a little depth but then relys on a very unlikely draft scenario to actually improve it (more on that later). Also simply saying "use up all the cap space on these guys or if needed in order to make it all work for this year dont sign player x" is plain and simply horrible and short sighted cap management.

As for the draft I wouldn't be opposed to either trade in a vacuum however theres roughly a zero percent chance Williams is there at 15, and if he were to be, you draft him at 12 and dont look back. And the idea of trading all the way up to 17 to draft Hockenson is nauseating. If they trade up that far it'll because Polite or Sweat are guys they're targeting. Not a TE who may very well be there at the end of round one.

Also theres no chance they cut Jackson and very little chance they cut Burkes. Showing this kind of willingness to cut a young player before giving him a chance to develop is the exact mindset that got people wanting to cut Adams a few years ago.

Enh... I'll give Graham credit for doing his best through the whole season, but Gutekunst's statement is also a mark of how bare the TE cupboard is for the Packers. He's not as fast or as agile as he was at his peak and he's a so-so blocker at best.

Even if we grab one of the Iowa tight ends I think we keep Graham for another season.

Probably. I could see one of those guys, or Smith at the 30 spot(if the Packers don't trade it....)

I have no clue about the larger cap situation if Graham stays (or if Matthews and/or Cobb are re-negotiated). Can we read anything into the tea leaves for what that might mean for Bulaga, Perry, etal?

Matthew and Cobb are free agents. So there is no cap hit if we don't resign. I think Perry is toast.

I'd assume Bulaga is brought back. No doubt he's incredibly frustrating because of how often he's banged up, but he's still a real good RT when he's healthy. Hopefully we do draft a tackle somewhat early in the draft, but I'd roll with him to start this season.

Perry...yeah, I'm hoping he's cut.

When did Graham become even a "so so blocker at best"?

Another Gute comment from today at the combine: Packers to be active in FA

https://www.packers.com/news/packers-could-be-active-in-free-agency-again?campaign=sf208572015_FB_C-Content-GB_CT-NFL%20Combine-GB_sf208572015&sf208572015=1&fbclid=IwAR2nGdhkdLwPZYT8y_2ZTElxFPGcVkz9fb92INKiniCpwlC9eahhPjjjTNw

I don't know how much we read into that: what else would he say? However, Gute does seem to consider FA a viable channel for talent, so there's that..

I think Perry gets cut the day after June 1st. So he affects our cap either way.
