When hitting a pitched ball, a large part of the exit velocity is generated by the pitch itself. When hitting a ball off a tee, you're generating all of it.

Yup I think that would be how people think in general, that it's not very hard, but don't realize how difficult or abnormal it really is.

I ask anyone who questions Atkins, if you were hired by Rogers and were the GM, what would you do differently? Would you try to convince your owners that you are a competent employee and deserved to stay employed while arguing 3 weeks in April is worth more than a full season? Its that simple. Anyone that argues against this would be fired on the spot.

I don't blame players for doing what is in their best interest, ever. I also don't blame teams for doing what is in their best interests. The likelihood that Vlad will give us some sort of sweetheart deal because we called him up two weeks earlier than was optimal is basically nil.

He can be pissed all he wants but when every other team would do the same and everyone else has to understand its business and nothing personal. Until the system is fixed, this has happened to many players by many teams before and will continue to happen.

Players dont like getting traded, players dont like getting a qualify offer, players want extensions when they want them, players want more money than they are being offered, players usually want to play one or certain positions... many have to concede and many have conceded and moved on. Its a business.

If the Jays keep him down, do you think he would jeopardize his career by tanking his value or being a bad teammate?
If the Jays had Vlad start on opening day, do you think when it came time to renew him he would say "well you guys called me up 5-6 years ago, im gonna give you a discount on an extension!"

The Jays will continue to do what is best for the Jays now when they control his fate. And when Vlad controls his fate 6-7 years from now he will do what is best for him.

If he started on opening day and in 6 years the Jays offer him fair market value he is staying.
If he gets called up in mid-April and in 7 years the Jays offer him fair market value he is staying.

Wait, this is a fact? Any young player who is ‘pissed off’ because he spent 3 extra weeks in the minors and then takes it out on his franchise for the next 6+ years isnt going to be worth the trouble anyways. Mike Trout was sent down for the first 3 weeks of his rookie season and I’m quite certain he recovered ok.

Any Blue jay fan who is upset about this just can’t see the forest for the trees. It’s a very good thing that your current management is forward thinking, maximizes their assets and considers what’s going take place 6-7 years down the road. Only bad team management would put Vlade in the opening day lineup. That’s the instance when you should be upset, not this.

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- In the most recent entry of the physical characteristics of top Toronto Blue Jays prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr., which the team updated for the first time in a few years, he was listed at 6-foot-2 and 250 pounds.

Guerrero told ESPN that has been his average weight for the past two years and he hopes his participation in the Blue Jays' major league camp for the first time continues to help him improve his conditioning.

"That weight is normal for me; that's what I weighed last year. But this spring training, getting in better shape is part of my job too," Guerrero said in a one-on-one interview with ESPN. "Part of the work I am focused on this spring training is to strengthen my body and be as healthy as possible. I am not killing myself to lose weight but it is my job to be in the best shape possible for when the season starts."

The weight is a real concern. It probably won't come back to bite the Jays unless they sign him to a long contract. Weight problems often catch up to guys in their later 20s. We don't want him to be the next Prince Fielder or Pablo Sandoval.

Now here come the jokes about his oblique and the extra weight.These kinds of injuries can drag on quite a bit though, wouldn’t be surprised if he stays down for an extra month or 2 and we don’t see him with the Jays until the summer. And this isn’t his first injury. Hope he’s not one of those guys. Toronto seems cursed. All the new faces of the franchise. Vladdy, Matthews and Kawhi all seem made of glass.

Vlad is often said to be the best prospect since Mike Trout. Well, if he proves to be as good as Trout, this is what it may take to keep him beyond his control years.
