February Netflix Movies:

Skate Kitchen - There were quite a few skateboarding themed movies that came out last year, Mid90's probably the more popular of the bunch. Skate Kitchen is the one that stood out to me, which is basically the female version of Mid90's - a coming of age story about a girl and her girl skate crew. It dealt with the relationships with a single parent, young love, and being passionate about something at an age where many of us didn't know what direction to take our lives in. A nice slice of life story that feels authentic in many ways.

Hereditary - The best horror movie of last year no question. This movie surpassed the genre and is supremely made featuring one of my favourite acting performances of 2018 in Toni Collette. Even people normally not a big fan of the genre (like me) will appreciate this movie and the directions it goes in. Can't recommend this movie enough. I know some people who saw over 200 movies last year and rank Hereditary in their top 10 lists.

The Departed - If by chance you have not seen this Martin Scorsese crime drama or the original Infernal Affairs it was adapted from then you have a very good movie to watch. It has a twist you won't see coming and an all star cast; Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg (even HE is great in this). Leonardo has to infiltrate a crime organization by going DEEP undercover over the span of multiple years. You become so invested in his character and the danger he's always in, what happens along the way is amplified.

The Town - Ben Afleck proved he can direct his ass off with his sophomore film. A group of Boston southies go on a crime spree in this brutal and visceral action/thriller. Jeremy Renner is incredible in this, Ben Affleck, John Hamm, Blake Lively and Rebecca Hall are all great. Think I have re-watched this movie at least three times over the years - it fills the hole that Heat left.

We The Animals - An independent movie from last year that landed in my 7+ category. A tale about childhood and the bond you develop with your brothers. Unique in its own way, often narrated by the youngest of the brothers. They live in a divided impoverished household, parents often splitting up and they are left to fend for themselves, which ultimately brings them closer together and yet some things always remain a secret. Director Jeremiah Zagar earned a spot on my list of must watch filmmakers heading forward. Do yourself a favor and broaden your movie horizons for a change and watch something different. *Anyone who is a brother or has a brother likely to enjoy this

Lion - I posted this earlier in the month because it was deserving of its own post. I loved this movie and everyone that has watched this who I recommended it to has loved it.

Jaws - Who cares if it's over 40 years old, this is amazing. It shows the power music can have in a movie. There are iconic scenes that have aged timelessly. The sequels are up as well, while enjoyable in a guilty pleasure sort of way don't capture the magic of the original.

The 40 Year-Old Virgin - Maybe this is hitting a little too close to home for some of the wastemen but this movie is flat out hilarious. Steve Carrell started to prove he wouldn't just be a television star in this great comedy. You got so many classic lines, (I reference them to this day) and while this R rated comedy helped launch the Apatow raunchy comedy movement along with Superbad, it still has a whole lot of heart to it.

Back To The Future Trilogy - This thirty year old trilogy got added to Netflix and has really stood the test of time (I couldn't help myself.) One of the time travel greats that is entrenched in our pop culture references. Michael J Fox is so good in this, there's no one quite like him and this classic series of movies really should be watched by all. Normally with a trilogy you expect sharp drop offs in each successive movie but Back To The Future remained pretty consistent in my eyes. It's funny, it's cool, it's got emotion - and it's a must watch.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - Steven Spielberg is incredible. A few years ago this was briefly added to Netflix and I decided to give it a re-watch after nearly 15 years. It was not only better but I considered it one of the best movies I had watched that year. It has a once in a lifetime child performance from Henry Thomas who captures the bond he has with E.T. to his very soul. Please ignore the release date of the movie - it is the very definition of a classic in my eyes. Spielberg has always known the power music can have in empowering a scene and I can admit the final scene shook me to my core just as it had when I watched this as a 9 year old back in the day. Easily my favourite movie of all February releases.

Nocturnal Animals - One of my 2016 favourites of the year. This movie has the aesthetic of an art house yet has gruesome violence of a slasher. It crept into my psyche for months afterwards and explores masculinity, relationships, and your expectations in them. One of those thrillers with such a powerful 15 minute sequence I found myself gripping the sides of my movie theatre seat by the end of it. It's a story within a story (as the author of the story sends the manuscript to his ex wife to read which serves as a methaphor for their relationship.) Oh and it has one of the best musical scores of the decade if you like classical music. Liked this movie so much I ended up buying and reading the book. It's also a movie I warn people which has very disturbing scenes so careful watching this with a girlfriend or wife who needs something more 'fluffy'.

Project X - Do you like those high school themed movies like I do? Project X is based on a real story of a kid hosting a party at his parents house that quickly escalates into uncontrollable chaos. It has one of the coolest and most fitting soundtracks and has all sorts of debauchery and wildness. I love this movie, there's just something about it I really enjoyed - makes me wish I had a more wild youth to just live in the moment like some of these characters. Did I mention the soundtrack is great?

Schindler's List - Have you not seen this movie? Masterpiece.

Shrek - Dreamworks really figured out the formula for Pixar heading forward (even though Toy Story came out prior.) When you make a children's animated movie that is enjoyable and funny and cram it with loads of inside jokes for the adults/parents is when you make a blockbuster hit. Shrek is still great to this day, it has all the fairy tale characters within the world and maintains that charm and sense of adventure. When I hear the phrase 'fun for all ages' when describing a movie, I think back to Shrek and it certainly is.

I was planning to post it but I was sent to gaungdong for 12hrs, Going stay low for a while :noway:

Forget to ask what's your take on this btw?, As I was in shambles being sent to gaungdong for 12hrs :nonono:?

Kinda disappointed because it look like Sun/Moon engine but I can't really say it look bad either because Gen 1-7 was all portable graphics. I was rather hopeful for a Zelda Botw type of game which it still can be but looking at the little they have shown it looks like Sun/Moon port made into Gen 8. Game Freak as per usual: 1 step forward and 2 step back :noway:

An Elephant Sitting Still [Mandarin] (2018) - 7.5/10
Spoiler:
An Elephant Sitting Still 2018 ★★★½

Watched Feb 28, 2019
RedShoelace’s review published on Letterboxd :

A teenager who pushes a bully down a flight of stairs, a grandfather who's being forced into a retirement home, a young woman whose own mother treats her with disdain, and a gangster who witnesses his best friend commit suicide - all four share misery, and all four are bound to cross paths at one point in An Elephant Sitting Still. The community these characters live in China is impoverished, and offers little hope in what you could consider a happy existence. All encounter personal hardships and their unfortunate day to day events are as bleak as you could get. Yet that connection all four have is felt among the viewer and in a way emboldens them, their desire to leave in hopes of a fresh start in Manzhouli where an elephant is said to be at the zoo gives a light at the end of the tunnel. There's something about shared destiny, fate, kismet, or what have you that makes these types of films super entertaining. In the history of my film watching, many of my favourites can be traced to having this element in the story. As bleak and melancholy as the story gets with these characters, there's just something that drives you to keep watching in hopes of the best turning out.

Filmmaker Hu Bo wrote and directed a tremendous film here. It's beyond just the major characters that are connected in the story. Even the superfluous events in the day to day are connected in one way or another; a lost phone, or a wandering dog. One thing I loved was the framing of the movie, much of it done in steadicam but also one that keeps the major characters in focus while secondary characters often appearing out of focus and blurry, despite the close ups. Sometimes a small technical element or two sticks out, and when you watch as many movies as I do and yet do not possess expertise or knowledge in the field, it's pretty rewarding to remark something like this. An Elephant Sitting Still is excellently shot and looks great all the way through; there's even a few scenes that really stuck with me in their visual style. I really enjoyed this movie a lot, and when I finished and looked up filmmaker Hu Bo only to discover he had taken his life after wrapping up filming it really made me sad. In a way the film may have been a cry for help with lines such as "The world is a wasteland", just wish that the surprising upbeat conclusion of Wei Bu wanting to go "take a look" could have crossed the silver screen and affected its creator. An astounding feature film debut and sadly the last for Hu Bo.

7.5/10

I really enjoyed Hereditaty.
That little girl was scary af!
Toni Collette is “Extremely underated But don’t @ me” lol
Gabrielle Byrne (Miller’s crossing, usual suspects)
and “In treatment”
Based on the original series
Be Tupil
“is an Israeli television drama revolving around the personal and professional life of an Israeli psychologist “

The Departed
Spoiler:

Amazing re watch value! - the original Hong Kong version - Infernal Affairs ( trilogy) is worth watching imo.
The first one is exactly the same as Departed, so skip it and watch the next two parts imo.

These are solid review, enjoyed reading about the classics! Thanks Red.

I'll be honest, I expected it to be even smaller scale than this lol. Pokemon games are such a cash cow that there is no incentive to innovate.

A Private War (2018) - 5.5/10
Spoiler:
A Private War 2018 ★★½

Watched Mar 01, 2019
RedShoelace’s review published on Letterboxd :

A biopic based on war correspondent Marie Colvin and as the title suggests, her very own war with herself. Coming from documentarian Heineman (Cartel Land, City Of Ghosts), this was his debut in non documentary feature length category. Rosamund Pike was excellent as the troubled Marie Colvin, who encounters physical and mental strains while visiting places around the world under armed conflicts. Maybe because biopics in general don't strongly appeal to me, but I found the whole experience pretty average. Some of the action sequences were well done but nothing in particular stood out to me. Marie who was hinted at as being an alcoholic (hard to fault her with what she has had to endure psychologically working in that profession for so long) makes it difficult to watch. I also found it a bit strange for a film dealing with someone who strove for truth in her reporting, much of it was quite biased in covering the conflicts and the 'factual' events taking place. In many ways Joachim Trier's Louder Than Bombs was far more effective with far less screen time in capturing the mental struggles someone with a profession such as Marie's had to deal with.
