Celtics are a miserable bunch. They sure look like they hate playing with each other.

Let's hope they get back on track against Washington, being only 3 games out of a playoff spot has me a bit uneasy.

The Celtics' miserable season is one of the biggest surprises of the year. I assumed they were a sure bet to win 58+ games. Instead they're on pace for 49. And it would be much worse if Marcus Morris didn't have a massive outlier season.

The Celtics' season doesn't surprise me. I predicted Hayward wouldn't be as good as Tatum or Brown overall. Too many cooks in the kitchen. This is the age old scenario of sparse/limited minutes vs exceedingly high expectations adding up to diminishing returns.

Before the season I anticipated a minutes purge for Jaylen Brown and a back seat as go-to player for Jayson Tatum. The one thing that surprises me some is just how badly Kyrie Irving rubs the rest of the team. Terry Rozier did more with less last season. Kyrie is a ball stopper and he doesn't play a lick of good defense. Hayward has been EXACTLY what I thought. Overrated. Not a good defender. Played for Stevens in college but it all fell apart when his coach tore up his team chemistry by starting Hayward all season instead of easing him back.

The things not on Boston ar the emergence of Brooklyn, Milwaukee, Philly, and an even more improved Toronto Raptors. The East is just flat better this season.

Check out the On/Off +/- differences between last season and this season for the Celtics.

https://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2018.html

https://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2019.html

Three players: AL HORFORD, JAYLEN BROWN, and GORDON HAYWARD

Brown's radically different. Whatever his role and style of play is this season he has completely tanked. Was a plus 8.4 player with heavy minutes. Now, he's -3.5.

Horford's also been radically worse. From +7.9 to -2.5. The Celtics have been WORSE with Horford on the court this season. He's been injured and he's now 32 years old. Boston should be looking to move Horford this offseason OR make him their backup to Anthony Davis.

Last, as suspected, the Celtics are worse with Haywrd on the court. -2.7

One other note: Aron Baynes is missed. He played heavier minutes and was better last season. The Celtics don't defend like they did last season. Baynes is a good defender. Marcus Morris is not. For some reason, Morris has played more--perhaps due to Horford and Baynes missing time injured.

This is one horrific basketball game. The Cs look like a bubble playoff team right now. Missed layups, open shots. They should be up 25. I guess credit the Wiz defense.

Ah, the tank is back. Nice tank loss. Good effort after bad start. But Boston does not look good. Hayward can't move and Kyrie is throwing up running left-handers like he's Larry Bird.

I don't care if Portis starts or doesn't. He's showing what he is and that's a role player. He's not even close to being worth the $16M he was asking for. Thomas Bryant has played in just one season in the NBA and while he has a lot work on, he has much more upside. Sign that young man and let the Chicago guys walk unless they want affordable deals. Keep playing Ariza for the tank. That's cool. (2-10 FG, 0-5 3pt). Troy Brown getting the 13 minutes he should have been getting all year. Maybe by now, he'd playing 20-25mpg or starting. Good game for Jabari Parker off the bench but four turnovers. He's basically the point guard when he comes in. How about Brown handling it more?

Beal 39 mins. This has to stop.

Portis 28 mins, -14. Bryant 16 mins, +0 (0 fouls/0 tos). What the ****.

Johnson 9 mins, 3p (1/5 shooting). Dekker DNP. Wow.

What a freaking joke this team is. I like Sato/Beal/Brown/Dekker/Bryant but the rest is just so lame. Sad times. Meanwhile Porter played 55 mins in a crazy 4 OT Bulls win against Hawks (31p and 25 FGAs). My man Markkanen was also great. Bulls have a nice future as long as they don't screw up this summer.

Portis did a Mahinmi impersonation - he was bobbling everything thrown to him. A lot of centers have trouble playing against Horford - he's such a smart defender. I actually think Irving helps them a lot. He and Horford have such a good 2-man game going offensively, and Irving commands a double-team that should make Brown and Tatum better - even though neither has shown improvement this season. Hayward's still feeling the effect of coming back from his injury - it'll take time.

Same old s...tuff with playing Ariza and Green too much while sitting Dekker.

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.
