I was too, he should really be there. Smitty noted him in his article on Yahoo.

With news of John Wall tearing his Achilles, he has to jump to the top right?

Absolutely. An entire supermax contract for nothing at this point. With an achilles, players are never the same, especially once they are in their 30's.

Wall may have just zoomed up to number one. All in favor, say Aye...
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

And Wall's supermax hasn't even started yet.

These contracts are horrible. The NBA really needs to change the CBA if it wants to improve its product and get fans back enjoying it again. These guys aren't horrible players there's even some really good ones on this list. We really need to do away with so much guaranteed money and years. Players sign these types of contracts then tend to dwindle away and collect huge paychecks without having to worry about getting cut and in some cases even trying to excel and play well. NFL has a lot better system for getting teams out of crap contracts.

It's crazy how much this decade mirrors last decade for the Wizards. They have a big 3 (Arenas-Butler-Jamison, and Wall-Beal-Porter) that everyone knows is just a 1st/2nd round thing, then they give one of the biggest contracts of all time to a PG who gave them literally nothing on the contract in Arenas case, and I suspect next to nothing in Wall's. That's what happens when you keep Ernie Grunfeld for another 10 years after he made a mess of it the first time. I wonder if other bad GMs were somehow allowed to keep their job for a second decade if things would just keep repeating themselves... Colangelo was on his way with Fultz/Bargnani

Revisiting the top 5 I'd go:

1. John Wall

*Grand Canyon*

2. Nic Batum
3. Andrew Wiggins
4. Kevin Love
5. Chandler Parsons

I was tempted to put Hayward at 5 (he probably deserves to be top 5), but I'm still giving him a full year before throwing in the towel.

Parsons is only a few months away from being an expiring. Now, an expiring that means you have to pay near-max money for a player who doesn't belong on the court is not some juicy asset, but it's a comparatively much smaller problem than one that hangs over you for years. I think the length of a deal disproportionately increases its badness, just because it reduces your ability to change direction.

I like your "Grand Canyon" usage a lot, but I would put it like this:

1. John Wall (contract so huge that even pre-injury could never be justified by his play...unless he single-handedly led the team to the NBA finals....)

*Grand Canyon I*

2. Andrew Wiggins (has ranked each season between 150-350 in every known advanced stat, and remains the only max player in NBA history to never have had a season with a positive BPM or VORP....)

*Grand Canyon II*

3. Chris Paul (just because of injuries)/4. Hayward (yep, injuries and fit on that team)/5. Kevin Love (injury history)

6. Nic Batum/ 7. Dieng (both usually healthy just not quite good enough often enough to justify that salary)

8. Parsons (he'd be higher in the rankings but he's almost off the books)

Basically, I see 1 & 2 as untradeable without major (franchise-crippling) incentive added, 3-5 as probably tradeable eventually depending on how the various injury situations play out, and 6 onward as tradeable now in the right circumstance.

I'd still rather Wall than Wiggins.

Even with that contract and the injury? (If he was healthy, sure, I'd take Wall over Wiggins every single day of the week.)

Sadly I have more hope he's useful than Wiggins.

Man, you're even more down on Wiggins than I am--didn't think that's possible! :D

I think Wall and Wiggins are now 1st and 2nd. I would lean toward Wiggins for Batum being turned down by Hornets.

The combined Wiggins/Dieng contracts is a complete trainwreck for Minnesota, there's almost no way they can compete. At least they won't have a playoff drought creeping towards 20 years

I'm thinking THJ needs to be on this list somewhere, at least in the dishonerable mention list considering the ridiculous trade kicker. The guy is really a mess.

Someone mentioned the Wizards and Grunfeld repeating the same mistake of a decade ago, same with Cuban/Nelson, a constant overpaying of 2G that are nowhere near their contract, Finley, Matthews, THJ, and even Stackhouse to some extent.
