Here are some of my own personal hot takes:

1. Magic Johnson played in a Western Conference that was weaker than the Eastern Conference LeBron played in.
2. Individual perimeter defense is overrated.
3. Chris Paul is better than John Stockton.
4. The 1970s were the most competitive time in NBA history.
5. KD has no chance at being top 5 all-time.
6. Pau Gasol should have been FMVP in 2010.
7. Dirk's ring in 2011, while impressive, is overrated.

All Kobe lovers have a low IQ. Think about it, it makes sense,

Just be sure you don't confuse lover with fan. You can be smart and a Kobe fan.

Yup 80s west at is worst was weaker than the 06-18 East but the average season favors the west.

The story is as hot as hot takes get but it's hard to argue with the accuracy of the headline.

I loved Sheed when I was a kid, and it took me a while to finally accept that Tim Duncan was just flat out better. Sheed had the potential but never put everything together. Then KG and Dirk developed, and nobody even wanted to talk about Sheed.

Still really happy I got to watch him play, and loved his Pistons days.

I thought Kyrie Irving had legit GOAT potential after his rookie year.

I was rooting for the 2007 Mavericks against Golden State and was not a fan of We Believe.

I’ll start with mine.

I actually did not want the 1996 Bulls to reach 70 wins and was rooting against them so the 1972 Laker record would still stand.

LeBron in Miami annoyed me less than the 4 years in Cleveland

I had begrudging respect for the Heat yet despised the Cavs

My favorite by an NBA exec

"We wish Jordan were 7-feet, but he isn't. There just wasn't a center available. What can you do? Jordan isn't going to turn this franchise around. I wouldn't ask him to. He's a very good offensive player, but not an overpowering offensive player."

-- Rod Thorn, then Bulls general manager, after selecting Jordan in the 1984 NBA Draft

My two worst ever calls during my 17 years on realgm:

- Thank god the Heat took Wade, because Hinrich is amazing

- Tyrus Thomas is going to be Amare but also a great defender ... Lamarcus Aldridge is soft and will be a complete bust.

sp6r=underrated wrote:Hot Takes I still believe in
1. NBA should get rid of the draft/max salaries/age limit.
2. NBA owners should not be allowed to approve/block franchise relations. i.e., another team could move to Chicago tomorrow.
3. Three point line should be moved back.
4. Half court shots should count for four.
5. To encourage players to chuck the long heave at the end of quarters any shot attempted in the last second of the first 3 quarter will not count as fga unless the shot is made. Currently many players hold the ball until after time expires to protect efficiency stats.
6. Moving screen rules should be strictly enforced.
7. Delay of game rules after made baskets should be strictly enforced.
8. Chris Paul was the best player not named Lebron James of his generation.
9. Lebron > MJ by a clear margin. Lebron's prime of 06-18 is already three full seasons larger than MJ's of 87-98 due to his sabbaticals and injuries and it isn't at all clear MJ was even better at his best.
10. If you're starting a franchise and you have to pick a big from the last 4 decades: KG, TD, Hakeem, Robinson should all be picked over Shaq.
11. Carmelo is closer to David West than Dwyane Wade in career value and shouldn't sniff the HOF. His sure HOF status is due to East Coast Bias, PPG fetish, overvalue of college play and ties to a great draft class.
12. Lakers franchise history > Celtics even with less titles.
13. Jerry West is the GOAT figure of basketball careers (player + post playing career.)
14. His trade of Eddie Jones is the only reason the Shaq-Kobe lakers didn't go on a Warriors level run.
15. Big market teams have a small competitive advantage over small market teams. They should. Their success brings more happiness.
16. One of Stockton, Malone and Sloan is grossly overrated all time.
17. Amar'e was barely an above average player due to his piss poor defense.

More Hot takes
1. Up until 2006 Kobe was closer to Paul Pierce than Duncan or Garnett.
2. Shoe improvement is responsible for a large amount of the improved play on the court.
3. 1995 Rockets were worse than 1994 Rockets.
4. Some NBA champions were not the best team in the year they won.
5. The Post-Season is just a tournament not a mythical event that delineates the best team.
6. Many NBA seasons do not have a best team.
7. The last few ABA champions deserve as much respect as the NBA champions in those seasons.
8. Great teams are greats because of their ability to win games by double digit margins not win close games.
9. The NCAA for big-time sports is an ethical disgrace.
10. Hinkie deserved to be banished from the NBA and his tactics put him only one tier above owners such as Sterling who intentionally ran their team as cheaply as possible.
11. If the NBA didn't take immediate steps after Hinkie, we would have eventually seen a significant drop in the quality of the league as bottom feeders would have signed G leaguers to lose games rather than more talented vets. Coaches would have been ordered to try to lose games by mgmt., and the sport would become far more farcical.
12. It is completely reasonable for NBA players to try to force their way out of cities. Most of them were drafted their and never would have signed the contract as written if they could negotiate with other teams.
13. It is far too difficult to make trades in the NBA.
14. NBA teams suffer from loss aversion and are too reluctant to make trades.
15. A good GM doesn't try to rip off the other team in a trade but help both teams accomplish their goal. If you intentionally go around ripping people off you'll eventually be shut out of the trade market or have to pay a premium because people don't tryst you due to their reputation.
16. Pat Riley's success in Miami is underrated. It isn't a great sports town. It isn't at the NY/LA level for desirability. Yet they've consistently fielded good teams and acquired numerous top players and identified several excellent coaches.
17. Spo is the only elite coach Lebron ever had.
18. But for Bosh's illness, Miami would have quickly become a 2nd tier team (2-4 SRS) after Lebron leaving.
19. NBA's blood rule is unnecessary.
20. Flip Saunders was an excellent coach.
21. Coaches have an age curve. They eventually lose the ability to communicate with players due to the extreme age gap.
22. Female play by play announcers suffer from gender and looks discrimination.
23. Webber barely improved from his rookie year. His lack of improvement is proof basketball IQ =/= IQ because Webber is a sharp guy who never figured out how to consistently use his talent to help his team.
24. Dirk's Peak was 06 not 11. He just turned in a bad finals so everyone brushes aside the season.
25.On/Off stats are great when you have a large sample size. They are basically worthless for a single game.

RJ Hunter was going to be just as good as Devin Booker (to be fair, I was extremely high on both, but still...)

For real? Odds that the GOAT of hoops is MJ's size or smaller: ~5% - Odds that the GOAT of hoops is Kyrie's size or smaller: 0%
Also, something that might surprise people. I think when it comes to athleticism, agility, physical attributes and skill I rate LeBron only in the top 50.

I believe that someone like KD could have had 6+ rings if you replaced Jordan with him on those 90's Bulls squads.

Bradley Beal will be the next Ray Allen.

Years go by...

Ben McLemore will be the next Ray Allen.
