We should move on from JB at the end of the season

Post#1 » by GoBobs » Thu Mar 7, 2019 5:14 am

He talked about developing players but who has he developed? Looks like he has given up on Monk and MKG. Miles starts but gets backup minutes most nights.

Can't blame him for giving up on Willy. Biyombo earned more minutes with his solid play during the season but is now getting like 8 min per game.

Wtf is up with him sitting Frank all season only to decide he likes him the last three games?

We run the same offensive sets over and over. I generally like what we run but when you always do the same thing other teams are going to figure out how to guard you. He shows very little creativity as a coach on that end.

The defense is just god awful and looks like it has gotten worse over the course of the season.

I realized he was an idiot when he started talking about making Miles a defensive stopper while MKG rides the bench.

It doesn't look like the team is really excited about playing for him. JB is an average coach at best and that is likely being generous. Give me the best young college coach we can find with a proven record of winning over an nba assistant who has never accomplished anything as the head guy.

Keep him on, he'll be good for the tank next season if Kemba leaves. The guy has no idea how to win a basketball game.

I think we should let him go but we already struggle to get the best coaches here as it is. How many will want to coach here if we fire a guy after 1 season?

there is no point in letting him go, pop couldn't fix this team. we aren't doing anything for at least 2 years.

This^^^^

Hear the same things about JB that I use to about Clifford. Why are the young guys not playing? Why are they not developed better? Why do we continue to close games with Batum and Marvin on the floor? Why is MKG on the bench to close games? Why can't this team close out games? Why this, why that...

It all comes down to we just don't have good players no matter who the coach is. Until some contracts end and the team can improve the roster, the teams results will not change.

It seemed like he got worse as the season went on. Maybe the players tuned him out. Also, not playing Frank all year was just incredibly dumb. He is going to walk out of Charlotte and become a good rotational player somewhere else. Maybe even a starter in the right system. All so we could play Marv 30 minutes a game.

Probably should have played - Biz or Zeller (based on match up), Kaminsky, Bridges, Lamb, Kemba starting with Parker, Monk, MKG, Marv and Biz/Zeller off the bench. Batum could fill in for injuries or slumps or start over Miles if the benching ignited something.

I would never support moving on from a coach in less than a year, I think that reflects poorly on the organization.

With that said, I have been a bit concerned about JB ever since that NYK game where we were up by a hefty margin, then they went zone and we couldn't figure it out and lost.

I'm not sure how much weight I give to being a rookie (non-interim) head coach as a mitigating factor. Probably should be non-zero but not much.

the fact that the team kept getting near .500 and then immediately losing 2 or 3 in a row for the first 2-3 months of the season says a lot to me.

not to mention in interviews he sounds so....disingenuous? like there's a huge gap between what he's saying and what's true. obviously all coaches (and players for that matter) withhold some truth from the media, but he does it in a way that makes me wonder if he doesn't do the same thing with the team. tell them one thing and mean another. just a weird vibe I've gotten from him almost from the start of the season.

couple that with really no evidence of the team being buoyed by his coaching skills at any point in the season, and I don't see a compelling reason to keep him on. what evidence is there that he's above a replacement level coach?

I'm surprised, because I thought he was a really keen young coach when he was hired. but I dunno. I think there's something to be said about evaluating ~90% of NBA coaches based on their ability to have some semblance of a defense. the defense has let this team down over and over and over and over.

I accept that there are a few roster quagmires that limit the upside of this team, as well as the flexibility in making big, long-term, horizon-faced personnel decisions. but I would hope that a coach with real potential would show more than Borrego has shown this season. it's too bad.

he hasn't shown much to me.

he's on a 4 year contract, so he'd have to be completely AWFUL to be cut loose after one year. He'll get a second year with the team at least

Bickerstaff
Vincent
Brown
Silas
Dunlap
Clifford
Borego

That's the list of head coaches we have had since I started following the team in 2003. It seems like a lot to me.

And all of them, outside Bickerstaff and Clifford, only lasted a season or two (and Bickerstaff only 3).

Forget DJ White. The true turnstile of this franchise is the head coaching position.

All rookie coaches should get at least two years before they're fired. JB is still really young and inexperienced, he deserves another year to see if can improve or not.

Well at least he hasn't nearly missed a flight or whatever like Vincent did.

I would give JB 1 or 2 more years. I think he got caught up in the Clifford thinking that the veterans would take him to the promised land although most of us knew otherwise. The vets gave him a few glimpses of possible success and he bought into it hook, line, and sinker only to be disappointed as Cliff was.
