Sounds like the cap hit for Amos is only going to be $5 million next year. I'm curious to see what both of the Smith's hits are, but if they're both under $10 million for 2019, there should still be close to $12-15 million in cap room (following the Perry cut) for this upcoming season. And that's before you could potentially shed Graham's salary.

Pretty sure he was the dope back in 2005 that said the Packers were going to trade up with the Saints to get Reggie Bush too.

The Amos deal might be the best deal handed out in the entire league. That said I'm not too keen on 2 out of the other 3 contracts we handed outFlames24Rulz wrote:Sounds like the cap hit for Amos is only going to be $5 million next year. Yes, we're better. It remains to be seen by how much.
Thank you, gents.
So according to PFF;
Preston Smith was the 19th best edge defender, similar score to Frank Clark, better score than TJ Watt and Melvin Ingram (Fackrell was 43rd)
ZaDarius Smith was the 33rd best edge defender, similar score to Joey Bosa, better score than Terrell Suggs (Clay was 59th)
Adrian Amos was the 8th best safety, similar score to Eric Weddle, better score than Devon McCourty and Harrison Smith (Tramon was 67th on the list)
Billy Turn was 33rd best guard, similar score to Mike Iupati, but worse scores than McCray and Lane Taylor at G., but he did play snaps at OT and not sure how that might have helped or hurt him.

Gute has been with this team for most of post SB 45. He watched MM and TT have an insane amount of job security years after they won in 2010.
He knows his best chance at winning a Super Bowl is right now when Aaron Rodgers is 35. Not next year or the year after that. The defense has been dreadful for so long, with such inconsistent LB and S play. He filled both positions with 3 starters today.
No way he's going into the season with potential question marks at those positions, risk missing the playoffs for a 3rd straight year and be out looking for a new job next offseason. He doesn't have a Super Bowl to fall back on. His job security is going to be measured on the success of the 2019-2020 Green Bay Packers season. Not the cap space of the 2025 Green Bay Packers.

I like the Za'Darius Smith deal, but I'm not as optimistic on the Preston Smith one. Still, it's a massive upgrade to a LB group that has been pretty abysmal since Peppers first two years here. I think Pettine is going to get the most out of both of them too. The money is a bit leery, but as long as the cap hits aren't that bad this year, I don't think it's going to be an issue with the money that's coming off the books next offseason.

I agree, but all of these deals are 4 year deals and I don't think anything is really guaranteed after the second year in all four of these moves. The cap space of, let's say the 2022 Green Bay Packers, might not even really be affected by these moves if they can get out of the deals without any penalty before then.

All of them come down to, "The Packers have two first round picks and an early second, I don't understand not filling the holes that way" to which I hold up the last ten years in Green Bay.
Filling holes with the money the Packers have now let's them use those picks on BPA.

No grade for Za'Darius Smith yet.
Bears S Adrian Amos to the Packers
The Packers had a need at safety – after moving corner Tramon Williams there last season – and they filled it by signing Amos from the Bears.
The 25-year-old Amos has 56 starts in four seasons, and he's made significant strides the past two seasons. He's a good player in coverage and he's a nice tackler in the run game. He's scheduled to make $37 million over four years, which is a bargain compared to the deal Landon Collins got from the Redskins.
Grade: B+
Redskins OLB Preston Smith to the Packers
On the heels of landing Za'Darius Smith to amp up the pass rush, the Packers followed that up by landing Preston Smith, one of the most-underrated players in this class. Preston Smith had four sacks last year to give him 24 ½ in his career, but he had over 50 pressures for the Redskins.
In the Packers' scheme, he will play as a stand-up outside linebacker who coordinator Mike Pettine will love to have. He's one of those 26-year-old players who is just now reaching his prime years. This is an outstanding signing.
Grade: A
No grade for Za'Darius Smith yet.

Mostly the Packers overspent on mid-tier guys is why.
Maybe the edge guys have untapped potential, but that isn't a given.
Agreed with him that Amos signing is best of the bunch.

Tramon needs cut asap. Hes finished anyway and we could use the 4m. Thanks for 2010 and the return back but just retire now. He was hot garbage last year and I cant imagine him being significantly better a year older.

For comparison sake, the 12th pick last year signed a $15 million dollar deal of which $9 million was signing bonus.
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.
Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

Doing it that way would've been fine if we had consistently hit on draft picks but TT was so bad the last few years that we basically have no choice but to go into free agency because there are too many holes around the roster to just fill with draft picks.
Oh yeah and we have a 35 year old HOF QB. Probably want to do everything you can to get him at least one more ring.

I keep wondering what it would have been like if Ted stepped down after 2014, instead of waiting another three years with some brutal drafts.

Right. If we didn't need another safety, a middle linebacker, at least one high level replacement for our FA defensive linemen next season, a replacement RT, and a reliable #2 WR...sure, wait and get pass rushers or a SS or a starting RG in the draft.

Several years ago Arrigo lied about being at the USC Pro Day and tried to play off images from the actual USC website as his own.
As for the players, I liked these bits from the ESPN story on Za'Darius.
Za'Darius Smith, 26, was the sacks leader for the NFL's No. 1 defense with a career-best 8.5 last season. His 60 quarterback pressures ranked No. 17 in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus.
Smith's upside and efficiency are intriguing. He hit the quarterback on 25 of his 485 pass-rush snaps (5.2 percent), which is more than Kansas City Chiefs pass-rusher Dee Ford (4.7 percent).
