If he makes the owners money over those 12 years then it’s worth it.

He’s probably still underpaid, there’s no telling what he would get if he ever hit free agency. Insane amount of money though

Trout averages 8.5 WAR a year, he's underpaid by about 50%.

He's that good...

And I don’t even know who he is -

and on NBA. I think a few players would be worth it (on a yearly salary basis) but you cant give NBA players a decade long contract, thats asking for trouble.

Don't forget Magic signed a 25 year contract I believe it was.
The only reason why they don't any more is the NBA saved the teams from themselves.
Now I don't know baseball and the contracts obviously don't hurt as much as in basketball. Is that right? Or only for the more well off teams?

There's always gonna be a risk, but FA will always be a risk. Still, if you gotta take a risk on one guy with this sort of money, it's Mike Trout. You can also make moves to spread around the risk, like letting Cano go and signing Ellsbury and McCann, but these lesser players can also bust. Or it can pay off.

Same with the NBA. You can sit out FA to be safe and avoid signing Wiggins or John Wall to a max contract, but that also means you lose your chance at Lebron, Durant, Kawhi, etc. And who's to say KD or Kawhi might not get hurt? We can't control these things, can't control freak accidents. All we can do is make intelligent decisions. Getting Trout for this money, and not letting him go to FA, is a smart decision in my book.

Most MLB players can walk around any mall or grocery stores completely unnoticed.

Super Max NBA contracts are already more per season and smarter since you aren't locking in a player nearly that long. A 10 year contract extension which is what that was is such a colossal risk. You have no idea how a player will be that long down the line. Look at Arod. He signed a 10 year 275 million contract with the Yankees and was bought out before the contract ended.

which begs the question, will the MLB even exist by the end of this contract?

I mean it equates to more than 570 million over the 12 years.

And that's with a salary cap. Can't imagine what salaries would be like in the NBA if there was no cap (though I think the mlb luxury tax is not that much different than the NBA's soft cap+tax)

And good lord - can you imagine the trade demands and sitting out hissy fits if guys were on 12 year contracts???? These guys can’t even do 4 years out of 5 before wanting out cause it is “their time” and they are dissatisfied w/ something. And they doesn’t consider someone getting injured.

How does baseball work? Is that money guaranteed if he gets hurt?

Luka or Ben Simmons would probably get those kind of deals if there were no cap or restriction on years.

It would have to be someone between 19-22, or one of the future HS to NBA pros who comes in and averages crazy numbers at 18.

It’s really fox sports paying. In 10 years, when no one is watching baseball anymore, Fox is still shelling out $150mil per year to the dodgers.

There's no cap. It's irrelevant what he makes, only to the teams pocket book. They might make that in Trout gear sales alone in 5 years.

Would never give that to Simmons. He already seems lazy and entitled and has already sat out an entire season w/ questionable intentions. Imagine how he’d get on a 12 year contract? He’d never improve at all and would probably get a major attitude if the team ever had to rebuild.

Luka I guess is would consider - he seems to have a great attitude and is all around skilled. Would want to see more than just a one year sample though.

No one in NBA, but the yearly equivalent on a 5-6 year deal would work.
