10 years? Are people outside of a handful of markets (LA, NY, Chi, Bos) watching now? Without a Salary Cap, Small Market teams are at a huge disadvantage for the most part (3/4th's of the league are Farm teams). This is why the sport (MLB) has suffered & can't/won't contend with the NFL. The NBA has also surpassed it in popularity thanks to Social Media/Marketing. I believe the average fan is over the age of 50. Younger generations aren't gravitating towards the sport. Baseball will have to adapt or die.

Doncic, Zion, Giannis

20-32 are all basically prime years. If you were the Grizzlies/Bucks/Suns, these deals are much better than the Conley one

In baseball one player can't carry a team. In Basketball one player can make a huge impact. Look at LeBron previous to this season, Jordan during his career, etc.

Exactly.. now Mike Trout is the best baseball player by far but it just amazes me that baseball stars don't really register culturally in everyday society like they used to. There's only a handful of people who would say, "Oh sh*t Mike Trout(or Harper/Machado) is in town. We gotta hit the ballpark!! :o " That's how it was when Bonds, Sosa, McGwire, Griffey, and company played. No hate but its just so shocking to see so much money for players that don't move the needle one bit. Its crazy

If there were no cap limitations on max salaries & a ridiculously high cap (200?), I’d pay AD / Giannis that money for the next 12 years.

50 mil per for the next 7 years then the remaining 80 mil spread out over 5.

Well worth it to have a top 5 player through their prime locked up.

well yea, it's an easier pill to swallow in a sport where you're literally standing around for 90% of the time.

I understand that we are on a basketball forum but are you two serious with this nonsensical baseball bashing? NBA won't surpass MLB in 10 years. If you only listened to people here, you'd think NBA has NFL beat too.

And yet when you ask people IRL locally who’s more popular in their region/state the MLB team or their NBA team most people (even the diehard NBA fan) would tell you the MLB team is more popular. The only cities that the NBA team is more popular than the MLB team would probably be the Lakers, Heat, and probably the Warriors over the A’s and Giants. People really underestimate the popularity of MLB regionally and outside the metro areas and overrate the NBA’s popularity outside the biggest cities and nationally(only listening to what talking heads and national tv ratings).

I don't think a lot of people even know Trout is a generational talent.

That's why I question the contract, not because of his abilities. Angles have had the best player in baseball for years now, in a major market, and nobody knows who he is.

Trout is the best player since prime ARod, problem is in baseball one guy can only move the needle so much. Good chance he never sniffs success with the Angels.

The NBA has absolutely surpassed MLB in popularity. The National Media (Which drives ratings) rarely if ever talks about Baseball nowadays. The NFL/College Football & NBA/March Madness dominants dominates the headlines for the most part (ESPN, Fox, etc.). The only time Baseball gets coverage is during the Playoffs/World Series. Yet Football in October, still dominants dominates the sports landscape.

And honestly if you asked the average Joe to pick out who Mike Trout was, there's a very high likelihood that they wouldn't even know. Lebron or MJ would get recognized right away. Same can be said for someone like Tom Brady (At least in the U.S.)

The only reason Baseball (MLB) outperforms the NBA in Revenue is due to the amount of games played (162 v. 82) & the difference in seating. Arena's (20K) v. Outdoor Baseball Stadiums (40-60K) on average.

Underrated point. If Trout walked into a random bar in NYC would anyone know who he is?

I would sign Giannis to this in a heart beat. It's a given he would get 5/250 next summer, so that would be 7/180 for his sunset years. I think he will age gracefully.

I think a 10/500 would be 'fair' for both sides. Guarantees Giannis would be a buck for life and you could strategically build around him instead of the constant 1+1 that other stars are trying.

Mike Trout's contract is pretty reasonable. Bryce Harper's contract is insane. A 1 year wonder who produced fewer WAR over the last 3 years than 10 players did last year. You can pick any random all-star and they've out performed Harper over the last 3 years. Adrian Beltre, Jean Segura, Anthony Rizzo and a few dozen other guys.

With no contract restrictions, Giannis and maybe Towns are probably the only guys who could get that right now. Davis and Embiid have injury histories but could get close and other guys are older. But given a couple guys are already getting $40M+/year, maybe there are some teams that would be willing to thown $430 at a Harden or Durant or Leonard or George. There are some guys like Simmons, Donic and even John Collins who could get there, but they still need to show a bit more.
