B1G went 5 - 0
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.

Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

I like college hoops more than most, but that day bored me to tears.

Outside of Wofford/Seton Hall toward the end, the latter half of the game schedule were snoozers.

This year’s crop of college teams is as unimpressive as I ever remember. Like weirdly bad.

Even the Auburn game, while close, was borne of ineptitude on Auburn's part, not some ferocious comeback by NMSU. Meh.

I will say I didn't see the last 10:00 of the Belmont game. That looked like it was pretty exciting.

Bradley/MSU game was exciting until MSU ran away.

I did a spot check of some box scores from the 1988 tournament. Teams were shooting roughly 3 - 6 three pointers a game and ending up with FG% of .500. I didn't look at turnovers. Also didn't really look at fouls. Crazy how much the game has changed. Guessing here since KenPom only goes back to 2002 but I bet teams ran a heckuva lot more back in those days.

The game has gotten a bit slower the past 10 years yet again because there is the Bo-ification of college hoops where teams are mostly united in trying to not turn it over.

This year, Wisconsin was #7 in the country turning it over 14.1% of possessions.

I picked 2003-2004 randomly: Wisconsin was #5 in the country turning it over 15.8% of the time.

The rule changes of 4 years ago have cut turnovers a little bit just by calling more defensive fouls, Wisconsin was #1 that year at 12.2% (but way above everyone else). 7th place that year was 14.8%

But just as a comparison, Minnesota among other teams in 2014-2015 (before the rule changes) were tied for 72nd in the nation at 17.2% of possessions. In 2003-2004, 17.2% would've been 13th in the country. In '97-'98, that would've been 5th in the country.

Basically, take the top 20 in turnover % this year and they'd have been the best offense in the country at limiting turnovers from like the beginning of time to like 2006 or 2007. And it has gradually gotten lower and lower since.

The players aren't good enough and coaches know that valuing possessions is key. So a lot of the major conference teams play slower so as to limit turnovers. They have to or they'll lose to the other coach that does it.

Like the Windler kid from Belmont. Haven't seen much of him, but gives off a Joe Ingles vibe.

Interesting to look at some of these trends.

Free Throw rate is way up. In 2002, there were 5 teams with a FTRate of 40.0 or above. This year? There's 72.
In 2002 there were 4 teams that got 40% or more of their points from three pointers. This year it's 17.

The FT rate thing is kinda crazy because in theory they should be calling more fouls since the rule changes of 2014-2015. And they do. But team defenses are also trying to avoid fouling. That's why you're seeing some of these teams that for whatever reason are completely out of depth (Nebraska Big Ten Tournament, Minnesota BTT/NCAA) just rolling with 5 guys basically and they can make a run.
