Darko Milicic speaking about his days as an NBA player in an interview on Serbian TV

Post#1 » by Drygon » Sat Mar 23, 2019 6:12 pm

He was a guest on Serbian TV and talked about his days in NBA, things he did there, called out few players as well.

Here are some anecdotes:

- Darko said that Kevin Love was a crybaby when they played together at Timberwolves. Said that if Kevin Love didn't score his 20 points, you could almost see tears in his eyes.

- Darko wanted to buy "Golf 4", when he told his teammates, they made fun of him, so he went out and spent 500.000 on four cars. At times, he had 10 cars in a garage.

- Darko says he had the best parties in Detroit.

- Says he wanted to fight Dwight Howard in training once, but with time he realized that Dwight is actually an amazing dude and never fights or even swears.

- He spent all of his monthly paycheck on a boat which he drove 5 times and destroyed after hitting the shore. He bought the boat the same day he saw his friend having it, so he thought it'd be cool to own one.

- Can't understand American mentality and his players, who were focused on basketball 24/7. Says it was the only talking point for them.

- Was shocked when he paid the bill for him and Marc Gasol. The bill was $15.000 and Marc spent 7.500 on Don Perignon

- The host is sure of the fact that Darko could've been as good as LeBron James if he was given the chance. Darko is pretty realistic about the whole thing, admits to many of his mistakes (this repeats on multiple occasions)

Always thought he was immature and kind of an idiot and this certainly backs that up.

Also not sure on the Kevin love stuff. Maybe it’s true but if it is he completely changed his attitude when he came to Cleveland. Sacrificed the most, didn’t get enough shots, always the whipping boy and never complained. Really always been the ultimate team player for us.

that's pretty much why he failed.

He also added that players in NBA are either staring at their phones all of the time or talking ball, there is no room for any personal connections between players. And he was also surprised when going out on team dinner or lunch, players earning millions of dollars are splitting bills, each paying their own stuff, 10-15$ - so on multiple occasions he just picked up the check.

And yes, that kind of behavior is strange for us South-Europeans. People should be friendly, easy to reach, especially if you are part of the team. And it's quite a normal thing that you pick the bill one time, and next time someone else pays the meal. Normal people are doing this here, let alone rich folks. If I go out with friends, we never split the bill.

And about Kevin Love part. He said that the dude had tears in his eyes if he didn't get his 20 pts, even if the team won the game. At the end of the season Darko said some hard stuff to some Timberwolves players and the GM still wanted to bring him back next season if he would tell them that he was sorry. Darko was like, nah fck that!

1. Not watching a 2 hour video on Darko.
2. Pistons should’ve taken Bosh, they didn’t have Rasheed at the time.

I don't know why people hold it against him that he didn't have a raw passion for basketball lol. Not everyone is built like that

My favorite part is when he talks about some fancy dinner they had taken him to. He's not a fan of small food concept, I can tell you that. Also lack of bread completely pissed him off. To cheer him up, the manager who organized everything told him there was Mariah Carey sitting right next to him, to which Darko replied: "Who cares about Mariah Carey, get me some bread!"
Det. Frank Pembleton: You know, sometimes you're funny. Then there's now.

They had Rasheed at that time. That was the year they won the championship.

They should’ve taken Carmelo though in hindsight. They needed a go to scorer and Carmelo could’ve been that guy and their strong defense would’ve covered up for his lack of defense.

If they took Carmelo they likely win at least 1 more title between 2004-2008

Can I have some of what that host is smoking if he thinks the only thing separating Lebron and this stiff is a “chance”?

They traded for Sheed at the deadline.

Advocating for either Melo (scoring) or Bosh (fit) is crazy. If you're going to go full-hindsight revisionist history, you take the best player available, Dwyane Wade. Then you make it work.

Agree however they had no PF, a good team and knew how raw Darko was.

I agree about Larry Brown, but Wade would have been 1000% harder to ruin than Darko. Darko just didn't care enough. Wade doesn't have that problem.

I can easily imagine Larry having trouble with young Melo, too. Larry is a genius, but he's damn hard to deal with at times.

He's not into sports and the show is hosting all kinds of people, so everything he said about basketball is not to be taken seriously.

Sorry yeah you’re right they got Rasheed later that year. I still think Carmelo should’ve been the pick though.

Not strange at all. Me, my friends and co-workers split the bill 98% of the time. If I'm with those same people and we all suddenly became stupidly rich, we'd still split the bill. Habits die hard.
