He was excellent on defense last time he played for the Sixers.

Wondering why he isn't on the team currently if that is the case. Can he be any worse than Jonathon Simmons ?

Has to do with his contract situation. If the Sixers converted his 2-Way to a regular contract, they'd only have him for one more year, they'd only have Early Bird Rights and he would be a RFA but another team could outbid what the Sixers can offer him, which could happen if he balls out. By waiting until the summer, they can have him under control on a cheap contract for three or four seasons.

Since it is not likely that they will have him for the Playoffs, might as well just let him continue to dominate down in the G-League until the conclusion of the season Mar 23rd. He can then rejoin the Sixers bench and get some burn until the end of the season.

Couldn't they give him a multi year deal right now?

Technically they could sign him to a two year deal right now...but this current season counts as one of those years. More importantly, if he does indeed shine there is the possibility the Sixers could lose him when he becomes a RFA, as another team could offer a larger amount beyond what the Sixers can match.

I believe they are limited to giving him a contract only through the next season and would have to use the Room exception. Whatever the rule is, they'd lose as much as two years of control.

As has been mentioned, the Sixers don't have cap room, so the only way they could sign Milton right now would be the room exception. Which is only a 2 year deal, and this season would count as one of those.

However, in the summer... if they stay over the cap they can sign him to a two year minimum deal and still have RFA rights after, or if they go under the cap they can sign him to a Hinkie special.

Ok. Didn't realize you had to be under the cap to do one of those Hinkie deals.

Zhaire with 8 pts in the opening quarter of tonight's Blue Coats game.

Edit: Update: Now in 3rd quarter he is up to 17 pts, and is 3 for 6 from behind the arc.

Can't you offer a minimum deal to anyone regardless of cap? Unless hard capped?

Think he can become a valuable piece of the rotation next season.
If feel they see him as Jimmy's future back-up (and successor hopefully)

Well, yeah... but only for two years (including this year), and if you're Milton why are you accepting that?

Milton would accept that because it gets him to the Association (for the Playoffs, no less), and he'll only be a year away from free agency, albeit restricted. Sixers wouldn't get as much benefit by not waiting until the Summer.

The hope should be Zhaire could replace JJ sooner rather than later if we don't find a replacement this summer so we can bring JJ off the pine. I don't think it will happen quite that quick, but it needs to happen cause we need another perimeter defender out there as we still can't guard small guards....one of our biggest weaknesses.

He's already in the Association. He has another year on his two way deal. It would be better financially for Milton to just wait for that to expire and then be a UFA.

For the Sixers, they want years of control. And he's not going to help them enough in the playoffs to give up the opportunity to get that.

The smart play is just to wait for the summer. Milton will be on the 15 man next year.

Gonna be interesting to see If Zhaire gets some time on the floor for the Sixers now the G-league season is done.

Milton would accept that in a heartbeat because he'd probably double his salary for this season in just 10 games with a regular salary, make 10x as much next season and get to restricted free agency sooner. It's the 76ers who wouldn't do it, because they're trying to maintain every bit of flexibility they have until they settle the Tobias and Jimmy situations.

At the end of the two-way, Milton will be a RFA. Also, as someone else has mentioned, even a minimum contract for two years pays far more than a two-way contract for the same length of time. Milton has incentive to take such a deal, but the Sixers do not, which is why they probably aren't going to go that route.

He’s been getting the “ben simmons” treatment by players disrespecting his 3pt shot in dleague. ..he also knocked down 3 3s in his last game
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.

It will be really interesting to see if and how he will be implemented in our rotation next year. I think there's a reasonable chance he can hit standstill threes, but shooting off movement will be unlikely.

One thing is sure, Smith will work his ass off this summer. Hopefully he will get the proper assistance from the staff.
