Injured Dejounte Murray continues road cameo
The formal portion of Spurs shootaround had ended Friday morning in Houston, but Davis Bertans and Bryn Forbes were eager to get a few more shots up.

All they needed was a passer to feed them the ball.

Having watched the bulk of the morning walkthrough from a seat in the Toyota Center bleachers, injured point guard Dejounte Murray was eager to help.Decked in team-issued sweats, Murray spent the next 15 minutes firing passes to his sharpshooting teammates in either corner.

“It’s good to have him around,” Forbes said. “He brings some energy, some life to us. Some laughter. We enjoy it.”

Earlier this month, Murray posted an Instagram video of his first dunk since the injury. Earlier this week, he says he began light contact work.

Asked what he has been cleared to do on the court, Murray said “everything.”

“Running, jumping, shooting,” Murray said. “Everything.”

It will be a while before Murray will be allowed to do anything of this in an NBA game.

Still, coach Gregg Popovich thought it important for Murray to begin traveling with the team again to feel a part of it. Murray is on the trip that began in Houston and will proceed to Boston today and Charlotte on Tuesday....

“These guys can see how hard I’m working to get back,” Murray said.

Important behind-the-scenes backbone Spurs news:

Peter J. Holt succeeds his mother as Spurs chairman and co-CEO
Peter J. Holt has succeeded his mother as chairman and co-chief executive officer of Spurs Sports & Entertainment, the Spurs announced Friday.

Julianna Hawn Holt, Peter J. Holt's mother, had held those posts since March 2016, when she succeeded her husband Peter M. Holt after he stepped down following a 20-year stint as the franchise's boss.

The Spurs also announced Friday that Peter J. Holt and his sister Corinna Holt Richter would succeed their parents on the organizations board of managers.

"We are excited to have Peter and Corinna assume leadership roles within Spurs Sport & Entertainment," SS&E president and co-CEO Rick Pych said in a statement. "Their values and business acumen will be key assets to our organization. The success and stability the Spurs have enjoyed under the leadership of the Holt family is remarkable. Logical succession planning has always been important to the Holt family, and we are thrilled that the family's legacy will be sustained through their continued dedication and vision."

"We are humbled to carry on the legacy that our parents created," Peter J. Holt said in a statement. "Corinna and I have grown up celebrating the growth and success of the Spurs and, like many San Antonians, our fondest memories are linked with the team. Understanding the deep love our community has for the Spurs, we'll always strive to put our fans first in everything we do. We are excited to continue to learn from the exceptional individuals who make up the Spurs ownership group and leadership team.

Spurs announce change of guard in Holt ownership
Image
A new generation of the Holt family is now in charge of the Spurs.

But a longtime Spurs investor predicted millennial siblings Peter J. Holt and Corinna Holt Richter would continue the golden hands-off approach their parents employed while running the franchise during a 23-year tenure that produced five NBA championships and countless admirers....

Peter M. Holt famously allowed coach Gregg Popovich and general manager R.C. Buford to run the Spurs without interference, a business model that helped paved the way for the club to become one of professional sports’ premier franchises.

“From the very beginning, (the Holts) have been pretty hands off in the sense they let us do our jobs,” Popovich told the San Antonio Express-News in March 2017 after an ESPN panel named Julianna Hawn Holt the NBA’s top owner. “R.C. and I, of course, keep them informed, as we should. But there is no interference — just support and enjoyment. They love being there and they love the team and what is going on. They love it for the city, and they just let us roll.”

Stephen Lang, the only remaining original Spurs investor from when the franchise, then known as the Chaparrals, moved to San Antonio from Dallas in 1973, predicted it would be “business as usual” for the club with the younger Holts in charge.

“I have no reason to think otherwise,” Lang said. “They are both quick studies, and I think highly of them. They have really done a great job taking over Holt Cat.”

In 2017, Peter J. Holt, then 31, and Richter, then 33, each took a controlling share of San Antonio-based Holt Cat, a fifth-generation family-owned business, from their father. Holt Cat is the largest Caterpillar equipment dealership network in the nation, employing more than 2,700 people at its more than 50 locations throughout Texas.

Peter J. Holt is Holt Cat’s CEO and general manager. Richter is the company’s president and chief administrative officer.

Peter and Julianna Hawn Holt became the Spurs’ largest shareholders in 1996. They are believed to own about 40 percent of the team, which would mean their share of the Spurs is worth about $620 million after Forbes valued the team at nearly $1.6 billion last year.

Popovich, Buford expect Holt siblings to continue low-key leadership
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Sunday he expects siblings Peter J. Holt and Corrina Holt Richter to continue the tradition of low-key ownership established by their parents.

The Spurs announced Friday that Holt and Richter would succeed their parents, Julianna Hawn Holt and Peter M. Holt, on the franchise’s board of managers.

The team also announced that Peter J. Holt has been appointed chairman and co-chief executive officer of Spurs Sports & Entertainment, continuing the family’s 23-year run as leaders of one of the most successful franchises in pro sports.

“We have full confidence in them,” Popovich said of the younger Holts. “They’re really intelligent, hard-working people who understand the organization. They’ve grown up with it. They are ready to go, excited about it. And we are excited about having them.”

With Peter M. Holt allowing Popovich and general manager R.C. Buford to run the basketball end of the franchise without interference, the Spurs won five NBA titles from 1999 through 2014.

“The leadership the Holt family has given to our club has been the foundation of our program for more than two decades,” Buford said. “We are looking forward to working together with Peter and Corinna.”

Rudy Gay is one of the 12 nominees for the NBA's 2018-19 Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award, the league announced Monday.

The award recognizes the player deemed the best teammate based on selfless play, on- and off-court leadership as a mentor and role model to other NBA players, and commitment and dedication to team....

The nominees, six from each conference, are selected by a panel of NBA legends. The winner is chosen by through of vote of NBA players.

The winner will be announced during TNT's broadcast of the NBA's award show June 24.

As a part of the award, the NBA makes a $25,000 donation to the charity of the recipient's choice.

Created in 2013, the award is named after Jack Twyman and Muarice Stokes, who played together on the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals from 1955 to 1958 until a head injury suffered in a game cut Stokes' career cut short.

Stokes became paralyzed due to post-traumatic encephalopathy, a brain injury that damages the motor-control center. Twyman became Stokes' legal guardian and advocate until Stokes' death in 1970.

Tim Duncan won the award in 2015.

What a forward thinking initiative:

SAN ANTONIO SPURS CELEBRATE WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY WITH OPENING OF SENSORY ROOM AT THE AT&T CENTER
Media Invited to Attend Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Prior to Game vs. the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday
The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they will open a new Sensory Room inside the AT&T Center in celebration of World Autism Awareness Day prior to the game vs. the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday, April 2. The room, designed by nonprofit KultureCity, is located outside of Section 230 on the Balcony Level and will be an oasis for guests at any event in the AT&T Center with sensory needs or sensory-processing issues such as Autism, PTSD, dementia, or anxiety.

Media members are invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the entrance to the room at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Attendees will include San Antonio families impacted by Autism, representatives from local sensory-focused organizations, KultureCity Sensory Board Member Jason Rogoff, and Spurs Sports & Entertainment executives.

The AT&T Center Sensory Room provides a quiet, calming space for any fan in need of a peaceful refuge inside the arena. The private room is furnished with plush seating, calming artwork, and sensory-friendly activities. The AT&T Center is now certified as sensory inclusive by KultureCity, and a majority of full-and-part-time staff members have participated in sensory training through the organization.

Guests with sensory needs can also check out a sensory bag at Guest Services, located inside the East Entrance on the Plaza Level. Each bag contains noise-cancelling headphones, a nonverbal feelings thermometer, fidget toys, and a KultureCity VIP lanyard to help trained staff to discreetly identify guests who may need assistance during the event.

In addition to the AT&T Center Sensory Room, Spurs Sports & Entertainment also seeks to improve the guest experience through the notation of Quiet Areas and Headphone Zones located around the arena. Signs for these areas can be found throughout the concourse on each level of the building, and AT&T Center staff members will be on hand at each event to address the unique needs of the building’s guests.

About KultureCity

KultureCity is a leading nonprofit recognized nationwide for using their resources to revolutionize and effect change in the community for those with sensory needs, not just those with Autism. Since the program’s inception, KultureCity has created over 200 sensory-inclusive venues in three countries. Recently, KultureCity was named one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2019 by Fast Company.
