Re: Cameron Reddish
Reddish is the most fascinating player to come out in a while. Go back and look at his highlights from year or two ago. Incredible how his body has filled out. Reddish has the potential to be one of the best players in this draft, but he also has the potential to be a bust or a 3-d role player. He needs to go to a team, that will give him time to grow and work on his game. He can play solid defense and stretch the floor right now, but there seems to be something very fragile about his make-up. To the point where throwing him to the wolves, might lead to him drowning.
I think he's better than he showed at Duke, but the lack of spacing really exposed his weak handling and his struggles to finish. Reddish is a guy who's game probably came easy to him and for the first time in his life he's struggled. He needs a lot of work on his game, but at these measurables, if he can figure it out he can be an absolutely devastating player in his prime.
How good would Andrew Wiggins be if he was given time to develop his offensive game instead of just being, hyped up and asked to perform from the jump. Hype goes to your head, it is only natural. At the same time, criticism will either force you to work on your game and improve or crash and burn.
Cam has been criticized from the first game he's played at Duke to the last. He simply did not have the skills to make it work at Duke. If you put him on a team with better spacing, he probably plays better. Personally, I love Cam for the Wiz. We don't need him to come in a be superman. Just come in, work on your game and improve. If another team gets him and expects him to contribute right away, it might not work out.
The numbers are very disconcerting, but when I think about drafting players, I draft the individual just as much as I look at the stats. Cam Reddish will hear more criticism for the next 3 months than he's probably heard his entire life. It will make him a better player.

Seriously this. He had to adjust to playing with RJ and Zion. First the offense rarely ran through Zion, the majority of his offense came through things he created himself. Cam's situation was setup perfectly for him, he was going to get the worst perimeter defender on him all game, teams were going to help off of him to help stop RJ and Zion. Also when Zion went down, Cam had the opportunity to step up with a bigger role, he ended up having his worst stretch of the season (tournament play he ended up having an even worse one).

i think the excuses exist because when Cam played well he looked SO good...in that if he was more consistent (a lot more) he'd have a real case at being the 2nd best player in this draft...so I think people want to believe he can be that good in a different situation possibly.
that said, i think it's almost impossible at this point to make a case for him as a lotto pick right now.

I have no problem taking him in the lottery.

There is no cases made that would persuade me to draft him at all let alone in the lottery...from a scouting perspective.
Now if I was involved in the process of interviews and could probe into his issues to give me a good picture of what I am really looking at, then maybe I change my tune, but he has a lot to make up regardless of a few good outings where the shots were falling when nobody good was guarding him.

If you scroll up you'd see my points listed clearly...But I'll restate. Basketball production is context driven. Take a player out of one context put him in another context and their averages, efficiency can vary greatly. Cam Reddish was put in a situation that simply did not fit his talent or his skill. His entire career he has been able to get by on physical ability and innate talent. When he went to Duke, there was no floor spacing and he struggled to both get to the hoop and finish. Hence the low efficiency numbers. Just as important, however, is the likely fact that his struggles impacted his confidence. This season is the first time that Cam Reddish has ever not succeeded at something. And in the weeks and months leading up to the NBA Draft Cam will be criticized heavily.
But, when I think about who I want my team to draft, I think not just about their own court ability but also the context surrounding their entry into the league. All Cam needs to do is work on his game. The physical tools are already there.
Now, for an NBA team that is looking to plug in a player, get immediate production and zoom along Cam Reddish is not the player for you. And I really believe that if he's put in that situation that he could flame out. But on a team like the Wizards, where he can just come in work hard and improve his game I think Cam Reddish is worth the a top 7 or top 10 pick because his potential if he figures it out is that high. At 6'8/6'9 with a form like he has, Cam Reddish just oozes potential.

If I was drafting a player solely for next year or the next two years, I wouldn't draft Cam Reddish. But in terms of ceiling, the only player in this draft that has a higher ceiling than Cam Reddish is Zion.

I wouldn't say that. When I think of potential I think guys who probably should stay at school or if they go to the league you see skills that are raw but after being refined could be elite.
So ahead of him I got
Nassir Little
Kevin Porter Jr
Bol Bol.
I actually think Cam has alittle more NBA readiness than those 3 and I know it didn't show as much at Duke but if nothing else hes a shooter. I mean, a team can draft him and while waiting for him to round out at least he can be a D3 player. But the guys I listed above can become so much better than what they are. Maybe that means they suck.

To me he is slightly better prospect than Tony Snell. And Tony Snell was 20th pick in one of worst draft classes of this decade and drafted not as BPA but as fit and need. Whoever drafts Cam Reddish, whatever GM decides to waste a high lottery pick on him I will tell you that same GM wont have long career in NBA.

The Tony Snell that averaged 4.4 ppg as a freshman? LOL. The Reddish hate is going to a new level. Cam Reddish is struggling with the same thing that all athletic wings struggle with. Before they were able to get by solely on athleticism and now they need to start developing skills. Tony Snell is a terrible comparison to Reddish because Tony Snell never even attempts to attack the rim. That's why his FT's attempted per game has never increased past 1. I'd rather my young player attack the hoop and fail, because I know he's going to work on that part of his game and improve, than to not attack the rim at all. I'm kind of taken back by the Cam Reddish hate tbh. Nothing that he struggles with can't be improved.

Their stats look the same as freshmans. Tony Snell improvement marginal to average in year two and 3, but good enough to be drafted in late 1st. In NBA nothing special, despite "good looking form". If you look Tony Snell rookie stats it's basically Cam Reddish, similar role 3&D. If Cam Reddish didnt had HS hype he wouldnt be even considered lottery pick at draft.
Tony Snell is perfect example that having tools doesnt make you good prospect, same as Cam. Tony had good tools, good size and wingspan, but also just like Cam he suffered from disapearing on court most of the time (motor questions), was terrible rebounder for his size, despite good looking shot below efficient in stats and his defense average.
So you can lol'it as much as you can.

i mean, all you're really talking about here is the potential, which almost everyone agrees with...problem is that he wasn't able to bring it all together for any consistent amount of time and his floor is quite low for what you'd want out of your lotto pick.

I am all about tools, measureables, etc... but production, work ethic, improving one's weaknesses matters as well. That is how Kris Middleton and Paul Millsap become all-stars while Michael Beasley is a journeyman.

Re: Cameron Reddish
But offensively, what skills does Reddish really have? To me, he looks like a sloppy ball-handler, and his shooting stats are awful. Blaming his shooting on poor spacing is nonsensical. If he had any kind of jump shot, he should have made a high percentage. And it's not like that was something new - he was a bad percentage shooter in the Nike league he played in. He's a talented versatile defender, and that has value but at this point - that's all of his value - and he's not exactly known as a high energy guy. What he has going for him is that he looks the part and is a good athlete who can defend athletic players. He is not an all-around player, and I don't see any reason to expect that to change.

Beasley had tremendous production. His issue was tools and measurements.
Talent, volume 3pt shooting was elite for most of the season till the knee injury. Measurements. No waste movements physically, shooting stroke. Athletic ability. He is just very projectable. But if you ask him to create his own offense. Expect terribad
His defensive potential is plus plus as well. Both on and off the ball.

I agree Cam looks like a decent role player I don't see star at all but even that is better than being a bust
