Gregg Popovich praises Jeff Van Gundy for World Cup success
Former Knicks coach led U.S. squad that secured a berth in the games this summer in China
Jeff Van Gundy has been tasked with guiding the national team through the qualifying rounds for the World Cup this summer in China — the precursor to the Olympic squad that Gregg Popovich will take over with a completely different set of players....

Popovich praised the work that Van Gundy has done guiding the U.S. squad, which is stocked with G League players. Van Gundy’s squad next faces Argentina in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Monday night and can clinch first place.

“He was remarkable. Spectacular,” Popovich said. “Off the charts what he did, qualifying USA for the world championships. He put together about five different teams. Mostly different players each time in a short amount of time he had to get them ready. If they didn’t do well, U.S. doesn’t go. He deserves a lot of credit for doing that . . . We’re really grateful to him for what he did.

“He was my first choice. We’ve known for a while, but we knew we had to qualify and we had to find a coach to do it. He was my first choice. Thankfully, he thought about it for a day or two and talked to his family and accepted it. He’s to be lauded for what he did.”

USA Men Close World Cup Qualifying Play with Thrilling 84-83 win over Argentina
"In terms of the shot, I knew that if it was coming my way, I was going to rise up and I felt pretty calm about my ability to put it in,” Hearn said. “I started thinking in my mind about the mechanics of turning and watching the ball go in. So, I tried to visualize it. So, calm going into it … crazy hectic afterwards.”

Michael Frazier II (Rio Grande Valley Vipers) finished with 23 points a U.S. Men’s World Cup Qualifying record five steals, and Charles Cooke (Sioux Falls Skyforce) was the only other player to reach double-digit scoring for the USA with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.

In the first period, the U.S. defense held Argentina to just 26.7 percent from the field (4-15 FGs) and closed the quarter with a 7-0 run to lead 22-14 after the first 10 minutes.... Argentina struggled to find the bottom of the net the first half, but that changed in the third quarter as Argentina sank six 3-pointers and not only took its first lead but went ahead 65-59 at the end of the period. With chants of “defense” and “USA” from the crowd in the fourth quarter, the U.S. battled back from down by nine points with 8:17 remaining to tie the game at 72-72 and 75-75. Argentina sank a 3 and added three points to lead 81-75 with 1:51 to play. After points from each side, Frazier sank free throws and Trice connected from deep to put the USA within one point, 83-82, with 37.3 remaining. Argentina missed its next shot attempt, and the USA had 15.4 seconds. Josh Adams’ (Raptors 905) shot rimmed out, but the USA had one last possession after Argentina knocked the rebound out of bounds. With 1.0 second remaining, the USA inbounded to Hearn who sank a tough shot from the corner to give the USA the 84-83 win.

The 32-team field for the 2019 FIBA World Cup, which will be played Aug. 31-Sept. 15 in China, is set, including: Angola, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Iran, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Jordan, Lithuania, Montenegro, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Russia, Senegal, Serbia, South Korea, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, USA and Venezuela. China qualified as the host country.

Fifty-four athletes suited up for USA Basketball throughout the six windows of FIBA World Cup Qualifying play.

USA Pre-World Cup Training Camp Opens August 5 in Las Vegas, Nevada
USA Basketball today announced two domestic exhibition games leading into the 2019 FIBA World Cup for Men. The USA Men’s National Team will hold a Blue-White intrasquad exhibition game at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Friday, Aug. 9, 7 p.m. (PDT) and will play international rival Spain on Friday, Aug. 16, 7 p.m. (PDT), at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Tickets for the Las Vegas and Anaheim games go on sale Friday, March 15 at 10 a.m. (PDT). For ticket information visit usab.com/mnttickets.

The USA National Team will open its 2019 training on Aug. 5 in Las Vegas and will practice daily through Aug. 8 at UNLV’s Mendenhall Center.

“The USA National Team’s training is critical in getting our team best prepared for the FIBA World Cup. The Blue-White exhibition game in Las Vegas and USA versus Spain in Anaheim will help us prepare for the challenges we will face in defending our World Cup gold medal,” said Jerry Colangelo, USA National Team managing director. “The two domestic games are a great opportunity for fans to see their USA Basketball National Team play in Las Vegas and Anaheim.”

“The exhibitions games will help our team learn about each other and build the chemistry that is necessary in order to compete at the level required for the FIBA World Cup,” said USA and San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich. “The Blue-White game will be important in our process of determining the USA team, and playing an excellent and experienced international team like Spain will be a challenge and important in our preparations.”

The announcement of the two exhibition games raises the number of announced USA pre-World Cup exhibitions to four games. USA Basketball previously announced that the USA Men’s National team would play two exhibition games versus Australia in Melbourne, Australia. With crowds expected to surpass 50,000 for each game, the USA-Australia exhibition games will be played on Aug. 22 and 24 at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.

The 32-team 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup competition will be held Aug. 31-Sept. 15 in China. Eight cities will host World Cup games - Beijing, Foshan, Wuhan, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Nanjing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Popovich will be assisted by NBA head coaches Steve Kerr (Golden State Warriors) and Nate McMillan (Indiana Pacers) and Villanova University head coach Jay Wright.

Players selected to represent the USA in 2019 are expected to be NBA players who are part of the 2019-20 USA National Team roster....

Results from the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 will qualify seven teams for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Additionally, Olympic host Japan automatically qualified, and the final four nations will qualify through four FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments that will be held in 2020 in advance of the Olympics.

Why do we play Classification Games?

Classification games and ranking principles are necessary as the final ranking of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 will be used to qualify directly 7 teams to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and 16 teams to the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.

FIBA Men’s World Cup Draw And Preliminary Round Schedule Announced

* 2019 FIBA World Cup for Men Schedule

FIBA (International Basketball Federation) conducted its draw for the 2019 FIBA World Cup for Men today in Shenzhen, China, and announced the composition of the eight, four-team preliminary round groups, and the preliminary round game schedule. The 2019 FIBA World Cup competition has been expanded from 16 to 32 teams and will be held Aug. 31-Sept. 15 in eight cities in China.

Two-time defending World Cup champion and FIBA’s No. 1 world ranked United States was drawn into Group E and will play its first round games in Shanghai. Also drawn into Group E were FIBA’s No. 17 ranked Turkey, No. 24 Czech Republic and No. 48 Japan.

The USA will play Czech Republic on Sept. 1, Turkey on Sept. 3 and Japan on Sept. 5.

The seven other preliminary round groups are as follows:

Group A, playing in Beijing - China, Côte d'Ivoire, Poland and Venezuela

Group B, playing in Wuhan - Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea and Russia

Group C, playing in Guangzhou - Iran, Puerto Rico, Spain and Tunisia

Group D, playing in Foshan - Angola, Italy, Philippines and Serbia

Group F, playing in Nanjing - Brazil, Greece, Montenegro and New Zealand

Group G, playing in Shenzhen - Dominican Republic, France, Germany and Jordan

Group H, playing in Dongguan - Australia, Canada, Lithuania and Senegal

"It’s exciting to learn the makeup of our preliminary round pool and to know we will be playing our first three World Cup games in Shanghai," said USA and head coach Gregg Popovich. "I think all of the pools are well balanced and I know very well there are many national teams who have a legitimate shot of winning the 2019 World Cup. Our group, Group E, features Czech Republic, Japan and Turkey, so we’ll face three well coached teams and a variety of playing styles. Selecting and preparing the USA team in a short amount of time will be a challenge and repeating as gold medalists for a third straight FIBA World Cup is something everyone associated with the USA team will embrace.”

Following competition of the round-robin first round games, the top two finishing teams from each group will qualify for the second round, while the bottom two teams from each group will play the classification round for places 17-32. Second round games are scheduled to be held Sept. 6-9 and the results of the three games from the first round carry over to the second round standings.

The second round will feature four groups - Group I will consist of A1, A2, B1 and B2; Group J will feature C1, C2, D1 and D2; Group K will consist of E1, E2, F1 and F2; and Group L will include G1, G2, H1 and H2. Second round play will be held in Foshan, Nanjing, Shenzhen and Wuhan.

The top two finishing teams from each second round group will qualify for the quarterfinals, and the bottom two teams from each second round group are eliminated and ranked in places 9-16 according to the Official Basketball Rules. The quarterfinals action will be held in Dongguan and Shanghai on Sept. 10-11.

Semifinals and the gold and bronze medal game are slated to be held in Beijing on Sept. 13 and Sept. 15, respectively.

GREGG POPOVICH ENTHUSED BY POPULARITY OF BOOMERSUSA GAMES IN MELBOURNE
USA Basketball Men’s National Team head coach Gregg Popovich has expressed his excitement at the size of the crowd that will await his USA team when they play the Australian Boomers in Melbourne on Thursday 22 August (7:30pm) and Saturday 24 August (2:00pm)
With just over four months until the biggest names in world basketball descend on Melbourne, Popovich spoke to the prospect of playing in front of 100,000 fans at Marvel Stadium.

“When I found out about that (the crowd) I was just shocked at the number of people that will be there (Marvel Stadium).

“NBA players are used to playing in front of big crowds but that’s a humongous crowd, really large. It will be an amazing experience and I think it will be a lot of fun.”

With the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup to be contested in China August 31 – September 15, the USA will play two games against the Boomers in Melbourne as both teams finalise their preparation for the world championship.

While final World Cup rosters are yet to be selected, it’s expected that both countries will be represented by their NBA stars as reflected in the new event creative unveiled today.

Currently ranked No. 11 in the world, Popovich believes the Boomers are a real medal threat at this year’s FIBA World Cup.

“They’re well disciplined, they’re talented, they’re seasoned and have an excellent opportunity to be very, very successful,” remarked Popovich.

To date, just over 92,000 tickets have been sold for these much-anticipated games at Marvel Stadium on Thursday 22 August and Saturday 24 August.

Tickets are on sale from Ticketmaster with official hospitality packages available from VIP NOW, https://www.vipnow.com.au/

USA Basketball Announces Lloyd Pierce as 2019-20 USA Men’s National Team Assistant Coach
Atlanta Hawks head coach Lloyd Pierce was named to the USA Basketball Men’s National Team coaching staff today. Pierce replaces Indiana Pacers head coach Nate McMillian who withdrew because of scheduling conflicts.

Pierce joins Gregg Popovich’s USA National Team coaching staff that also features NBA head coach Steve Kerr (Golden State Warriors) and Villanova University head coach Jay Wright as assistant coaches.

The coaching staff will lead the USA National Team in 2019-20, which will include the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China (Aug. 31-Sept. 15, 2019) and, if the USA qualifies, the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan (July 24-Aug. 9). The USA National Team will open its pre-World Cup training on Aug.5 in Las Vegas.

“Lloyd was an assistant coach at Philadelphia during the time I was serving there, and I got to know him. He has made great progression in his coaching career with stops at Cleveland, Golden State and Memphis, and then in Philadelphia before landing the head coaching job with the Hawks last year,” said Jerry Colangelo, who has served as the managing director of USA Basketball Men’s National Team program since 2005. “He has demonstrated the ability in particular to be an outstanding defensive coach. Also, it was evident during our time together in Philadelphia that he was a strong leader, players respected him a great deal. I think we’re fortunate to have someone of his abilities. I think he’s really a good addition.”

https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2019/04/mnt-april-assistants.aspx

Lloyd Pierce has drawn rave reviews for his work since arriving to be the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks prior to the 2018-19 season. The 42-year-old made a strong impression, both relationally and tactically, during his first campaign as an NBA head coach and, with that as the backdrop, word broke on Monday afternoon that Pierce was named to the USA Basketball Men’s National Team coaching staff.

“It’s an honor to receive this opportunity to represent our country and to work with such great coaches and staff,” said Pierce. “My family and I are excited about and committed to enjoying this journey.”

"Playing an outstanding opponent like Canada in Sydney is a fantastic way for the USA Men’s National Team to finish out its tour," said USA Basketball Men’s National Team Managing Director Jerry Colangelo. "This game will not just be an opportunity to put the finishing touches on our pre-World Cup preparations, but it will be amazing for USA Basketball to return to Qudos Bank Arena where the USA men and women won Olympic gold medals in 2000. I have no doubt the game and atmosphere around the game will again be very memorable."

"We’re excited to have the opportunity to compete and gain familiarity against some of the top teams in the world in preparation for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019," said Rowan Barrett, Canada Basketball General Manager, Men’s High Performance. "The USA has been the gold standard in FIBA basketball for several years so this will be a great opportunity for our program. In addition, having the chance to play tough road games against Australia and New Zealand will be a valuable experience for our team on the road to the World Cup."

The USA and New Zealand are two of only five nations – joining Serbia, Argentina and Spain – to have advanced out of pool play in each of the past four FIBA Basketball World Cups.
