Charlotte's draft history

Post#122 » by Najee12 » Wed Apr 3, 2019 9:16 pm

Bassman wrote:Our biggest draft mistakes have been tied to 2 things:

1. Drafting based on college accolades: Our picks typically have gone to good schools, have won some awards, but are good COLLEGE players, not projected as really good NBA players. Why? Partly where we select versus the available talent. Further down you have to be much better at finding an impact player.

2. We draft with the intent of changing them: MKG was a poor shooter but we decided we could fix that. Nope. We drafted Zeller and Frank to turn them into stretch 4’s. Nope. We drafted Monk and thought we could teach him defense. TBD but not looking good. Miles is undersized but trying to make him a 4. TBD - he is a rookie.

I agree on both accounts. The second-generation Charlotte's draft history largely consists of prospects from name-brand colleges with decent floors and low NBA ceilings, with more than a fair amount making some name for themselves in the NCAA tournament. If the pattern continues, the likely targets will be North Carolina's Nassir Little and Duke's Cam Reddish.

I don't like Naz Reid - so I assume we'll be a lock to draft him.

Wonder if Malik Monk could net us a top 20 draft pick?

I literally just started doing draft research so my super early, initial reaction is that I really really like Brandon Clarke (but have a feeling he'll be gone before we pick) and I do not like PJ Washington... I mean it looks like he'll be a decent 8th or 9th man... the typical low ceiling / high floor draft pick that Cho would love but seriously Washington has no business being a top-25 pick... which means we'll be taking him at 12

Denver will receive the more favorable of its 2019 2nd round pick protected for selections 56-60 and Washington's 2019 2nd round pick (via Atlanta) and Charlotte will receive the less favorable of these two picks (via Denver to Orlando).

Rather pivotal game - related to the above - just kicked off on ESPN. Denver vs. Portland, with the 4th and 6th best records in the league, play each other twice over the next 48 hours. The teams are also separated by 2 games. Between them is Houston, which sits two back of Denver in the loss column.

Reminder, if Denver finishes with a top 5 record we get Washington's 2nd (currently 37), but if they slide to 6th that pick becomes number 55. A couple Denver losses to Portland would have a serious impact on our likely draft position.

Knicks beating the Wizards would be good for that 2nd round pick. Right now, Wiz are tied with Pelicans and one game above the Mavericks. Chances are it won't happen because Knicks are putrid, but we can hope. Also, want to see the Pelicans beat the Kings and Mavericks beat the Grizzlies today.
The Charlotte Hornets will win their first round series against the Boston Celtics in the 2021 Playoffs

the 2 guys Im gonna watch in tonight's finale: Jarrett Culver and Ty Jerome

Culver will be long gone by the time we pick, because when we try to win we lose and when we try to lose we win, but he's pretty good

Jerome would be interesting if he drops to Rd 2, cuz he is 6'5 can pass defend and shoot 3s, plus he has awesome 80s era facial hair

OPTION 3 - Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Mfiondu Kabengele, Josh Reaves

OPTION 4 - Coby White, Jordan Poole, Bennie Boatwright

These are who I want with our picks in order

THEM - Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen

Grant Williams is going to be one of the more useful players to come out of this draft

Before we start ticking down our list of guys who could help us do we first need to talk about whether the team is going to attach this years #1 in a trade; Nic Batum, for instance, who Zach Lowe is convinced will be traded??

If it means getting Lamb or Frank back, I would attach the 1st. As long as they are not overpaid.

I would only trade the 1st if Kemba says he is resigning. Since the draft is before free agency then its not likely that we trade it.

If we can trade Batum with our pick and resign Kemba, Frank and Lamb with that $, heck yes, sign me up. #14 is not looking too awesome anyway.

I agree. Picking him 10-12 would be textbook Charlotte.

12. Charlotte Hornets: Kevin Porter Jr. (USC, SG, Freshman)

After coming off the bench and playing a secondary role to USC's veterans, Kevin Porter Jr. must be salivating at the chance to make an impression during workouts. They're designed for players like him who weren't great fits for the college game or on their specific rosters.

He's a candidate to rise in May and June with athleticism, handles and versatile shot-making ability that can shine in the workout setting.

Drafting Porter this high just means overlooking his limited impact, questionable shot selection and effort, chalking that up to being young and in a tough spot at USC.
