Re: Alex Caruso = Lakers Basketball
Agreement wise, I heard someone describe the most likely scenario as follows:
Lakers offer a one way $80K.
Another NBA team will then offer him a good deal.
Lakers will then match and retain him.
I’d say bypass all of that bs and lock him up for a three year deal now as soon as we can; a deal that’s decent for him, even when he blows up.
I’ve been a AC wagoneer from day one so my arms need no twisting. I think he’s rock solid. On both ends.

Before we explain why, here’s how two-way contracts actually work
Here are the specific details for the new two-way contract:
They will act as a 16th and 17th roster spot for NBA teams beginning next season (2017-18).
The player can spend up to 45 days with the NBA team that signs him, although no time is guaranteed.
Its very easy to say Alex should have played more games and minutes esp if we don't know how his contract works.
The previous year, he played 37 games at a not so impressive 8.7 PER shooting 30% from the 3pt area, under 49% EFG% against scrubs mostly at meaningless games. Don't get me wrong, I would love to retain him at a decent price, same with Muscala who actually has a decent touch from the 3pt area based on career ave and I like his mobility.

Re: Alex Caruso = Lakers Basketball
You’re talking about a rookie who spent most of his time bouncing between G-league and the NBA, getting called up randomly - on the same day sometimes. You know how many two-way players have been able to make an impact? Very few. Caruso has played for different roles and different positions for inconsistent minutes.
This year’s situation hasn’t been any better. But he’s been better. He’s worked hard to perform in those challenging situations, and he’s been consistently good. Better in fact than most of our guards.

what would jack bauer do? wrote:Yeah we gotta lock him up stat. Hopefully he shows loyalty and lets us sign him to a four year on the cheap. He reminds me a bit of when we had Kent Bazemore just reaching his groove and we let him slip through our fingers. He's a quality player that goes hard on defense every play, we need this to build a stable winning roster.
I think in cases like this it doesn't actually require the player to be 'loyal' and accept significantly less than market money. Out of all the teams who might be willing to offer him a multi-year deal, the Lakers are by far the most familiar and most likely most comfortable offering him a multi-year contract.
If let's say he's on a 1-year deal next year and plays great as the primary backup PG, then another team might snatch him up after that.

Re: Alex Caruso = Lakers Basketball
I worry about perspective with him. We're comparing him to who we've had coming off the bench at his position vs rotational players on true contender teams. I feel he's a 12th -14th man on a 8-10 deep contending team. Not that I don't like what I'm seeing rather trying to keep it in perspective. I know a lot here love Hart but to me Caruso is a much more complete player and still hasn't found a spot in this league. I would like to keep him but it would be after we build the top 8 at least.

After seeing a couple of them like Hart doing great the final months 2 yrs ago, I can't help but pump the breaks a bit for Alex. Yes, he is gritty, has the height to switch, high IQ etc but the bottom line for me is he agrees to a minimum or slightly higher than that, they yes, retain him. I'm pretty sure other GM's are taking notice too and most of them also get this "emotional".

My comment is that Caruso is a much more complete player than Hart. A knee issue doesn't keep you from seeing the floor offensively or "feeling" the defensive scheme. To me, Hart is a very easy player to replace at this level and we shouldn't make any decisions based on or revolving around him.

I think he is referring to my comment on why I am more hesitant to jump to the hype(5-8 great games) that Hart too had a very good month of Mar/April last year and this year he struggled big time. My response to this is that it's just Josh but also KCP,Kuzma etc.
Alex and Josh have different strengths and weaknesses because Caruso is more of a combo guard while Hart can is more of a pure SG and can guard SF and even some PF's.

Re: Alex Caruso = Lakers Basketball
Going forward I'd not plan anything around Hart or KCP. We are blinded by how bad this team has been in terms of talent evaluation IMHO. We have very few pieces who could be in a 8-10 place rotation on a true contender. KCP and Hart are easily replaceable pieces that should be considered after we have the core in place.
Getting that next true alpha level star in here and then deciding if any of the pieces we have fit around he and James would seem to be the prudent course of action. If not then we need to move them to balance out a team. I don't have any "loyalty" to guys we drafted just because the ping pong balls fell a certain way. Some will fit and some won't.

Hart has a rookie contract that is guaranteed til next season so I am a little confused on what you are saying here.
No he is not a started material but his numbers were pretty good before he got hurt.
First 37 games, his ORTG was atleast 107, TS% of 57%, better, comparable with guys like Westley Matthews and Robert Covington, both guys I believe can help the Lakers.

Again, If Hart needed to be a throw in to get a big trade done I'd move on in a minute. His production can be gotten for Vet minimums if we have a chance at a title.

So long as we don't give him a lowball offer, he will stay a Laker. I don't expect him to get more than around $3M/year though...what are you thinking, dog? [

Re: Alex Caruso = Lakers Basketball
As much as myself and everybody likes Caruso, he really hasn't proven much when the Lakers were actually competing for something (IMO at least). All of his good 2018 and 2019 games were when the Lakers were well out of playoff contention.
That's not to say he doesn't deserve to be the 3rd PG with a NBA roster spot, I just am cautious.

Caruso is worth at least $2mil
But needs playing time and can't just rot on the bench. So that's gonna happen with Lakers I want him else where - one of few players I have liked from the get go

I am betting Luke will ask Vlade to make a decent offer to Caruso. Kings would need a guy who works hard on defense and can switch to SGs at the same time a pretty smart player.

I always liked Alex from the first time I saw him in his first summer league. Kid plays The Right Way.
