Hornets Summer Film Study

Post#1 » by BigSlam » Thu Apr 11, 2019 2:48 pm

If you could lock each of our players in a room and have them watch hundreds and hundreds of hours of film over the summer of 1 player (past or present) to help them understand what they need to do in order to evolve and elevate their game, who's film would you assign to each of our players and why?

Kemba: Chris Paul
Kemba leads by example and leaves it all on the floor with his game play. I'd like to see him really focus on developing that "Floor General" mentality - directing traffic, telling guys where to be and where not to be and getting on them when they are not executing correctly.

Bacon: Joe Johnson
Bacon has that same slow, deliberate approach as Johnson did - similar bodies as well. I'd like to see Bacon develop the court vision and improve his BBIQ to help get others involved while still getting his own.

Bats: Trevor Ariza
Ariza might not "wow" you but he's locked into a game and focused every moment of every minute and plays with a quiet intensity on both ends. He rarely takes a play off and is able to impact a game just with his presence.

Miles: Blake Griffin
Really excited for Miles to take the next step next season. I'd like to see him harness his agility and explosiveness a little better and keep them under control while using them while bullying opposing players.

Cody: Steven Adams
81, 70, 80, 80, 76, 80. Those are the number of games Adams has played each season.
82, 62, 73, 62, 33, 49. Those are the number of games Cody has played each season.
Both physical players. Both very different results - in how they effect a game and how often they play.

Graham: Kemba Walker
He might not be as quick or shifty as Kemba, but if Graham can learn how to shoot off the bounce and learn how to create separation like Kemba it would really benefit him.

Monk: Manu GinĂ³bili
Decision making. Playing within yourself (but with flair). Knowing your limitations. Picking your spots. BBIQ.

Lamb: Giannis Antetokounmpo
Lamb could do with an angry streak. He needs to develop an "edge". He needs to play like his life depends on it and that nothing will stand in his way. He needs to stop pussying out on 50/50 balls and recoiling from contact.

MKG: Metta World Peace
Find confidence in taking (and making) corner 3's. Develop a little "crazy". Lock yourself in a gym and bench press mucho plates while snorting protein powder between having 11 meals a day so you really bulk up. Become a guy that opposing teams fear.

Marv: James Posey
Find an assistant coaching job. You've had a great NBA career, but the time has come.

Frank: Pascal Siakam
Frank is so robotic when going to the basket. It's methodical and deliberate and like watching cement dry. If he could tighten up his motions and be more slippery, ala Siakam, it would really help in him creating space and time. Siakam also has some pretty good handles for a big - something Frank sorely lacks.

Biz: Reggie Evans
Approaching every dunk and every blocked shot like he wants to kill the rim or kill the ball would be of benefit to Biz.

Willy: Montrezl Harrell
Be active. Be present. Bring energy. Make a difference.

Lamb doesn't need an angry streak or anything, he needs footwork lol

dude spends half of his dribbles sizing people up and moving backwards - then awkwardly accepts wherever he is on the court after driving as hard as his frail body will let him

Great idea.

Kemba - Steph Curry. I'm sure he's done plenty of this already, but as Kemba ages he is going to need to figure out how remain great while not getting to the rim as often and taking the beatings his body currently takes. Taking that next step in his shot creation ability would be nuts.

Malik - JJ Redick or Kyle Korver. Learning to play off the ball better and picking his spots should be key for him moving forward.

Bacon - Joe Johnson. I'm stealing this one from bigslam because I can't find a better one here. Bacon does a nice job creating his own shot, but Iso Joe would be a great guy for him to emulate.

Miles - Tobias Harris. Figuring out how to be more effective all-around scorer is the next step. Harris didn't have any go-to moves coming in and developed everything he has in the last 4-5 years. I hope Miles can do the same.

Zeller - current Brook Lopez. Figure out how Blopez extended his range and managed to keep himself healthy after early career injury proneness. This was a tough one but that's what I'd go with.

Willy - Brooklyn Lopez. Has the post moves, but can definitely learn how a slow footed guy can manage to be okay on defense and have a more diverse offensive skillset while still being kind of a dinosaur.

MKG - Andre Iguodala or Justise Winslow. Doesn't look like MKG's figuring it out from a scoring standpoint, so being able to add a little playmaking to his offensive repertoire would be huge for him.

Graham - Tony Parker. Devonte's already a pretty slick ball handler, being able to use that to become an efficient inside scorer would be really nice.

Lamb - he can watch Joe Johnson with Bacon for the same reasons I guess

Batum - Russell Westbrook. Learn how to play with some **** heart ffs

Marvin - Marvin Williams but show him videos of his missed floaters and tell him to never do that again

Frank - Nikola Mirotic. I've always said they're more or less the same player. I think Mirotic passed him the last couple of years, but Frank has the talent to be like him

Mack - Raymond Felton so that he can figure out how to be fat and almost serviceable at the same time.

Biz - Serge Ibaka but it's like 14 years too late for that

That's funny - I actually considered the same pairing for the same reason.

I also considered Draymond Green because in theory stylistically they could be similar (jacks of all trades).

Kemba - AI. I just want him taking the game over. Be more flamboyant, get the crowd and refs into it. He's too quiet for a star player.

Bacon - Wade. Work on your slashing, when that ball is in your hands, attack. People don't know who he is, use that to his advantage

Batum - Dell Curry. Stop using your head so much and trying to outsmart people. That doesn't work anymore because coaches are too good. Find a niche and hone in on it. We don't need a jack of all trades, we need a master of one.

Marv - Watch some GoT or something. We have to trade or cut.

Zeller - Dirk. You're too soft, you're inside game is done with. Either start knocking down 3s or go play International ball.

Monk - MJ. You have the shooters touch, but it's too erratic. Look at what made MJ great. Study why he made the moves he did against top defenses.

Graham - CP3. You have to be a dog with your body type. Hound guys like no other. Work on your court vision on the other end.

Miles - Rashard Lewis. Be the guy other teams hate to leave open. When you get that shot, it's going in and you're getting back on D.

Biz - Chill with Marv watching GoT

Willy - Marc Gasol. Be a banger down low. A lot of these big guys are soft. Make them want to come out of the game when you go in.
The Charlotte Hornets will win their first round series against the Boston Celtics in the 2021 Playoffs

Resurrecting to include the new guys:

Terry Rozier: De'Aaron Fox
Become an absolute terror on the defensive end.
Figure out the difference between a bad shot and a good shot and when to take them. Then spend hours upon hours in the gym working on your J.
Work out how to use your speed, strength and handle to get to the line to average 6+ FTA's per game and get those easy points.
Unlock the joy of making passes.

PJ Washington: Kevin Love
In his prime, the best passing big guy in the game and ferocious on the boards.
Learn from the all out effort that Love played with.
Have the same nose for the ball being in the right place at the right time.
Look at the work he put into his body from UCLA and through his NBA career.
Learn to play with the inside/outside variety of ways Love can score the ball.
Be the model pro.

Cody Martin: Shaun Livingston
Work on a mid rage game that is money and allows you to take advantage of your height and length.
Understand the limitations of your game and play to your strengths minimizing what you don't do well by not trying to do too much.
Come in and with your older age and maturity, be an outstanding locker room presence and motivator to the younger guys.
