Wes Iwundu
We have talked about the impact of MCW and Birch, but not much of Iwundu.
Dude maximizes his allotted minutes. Strong defense and knocks down open shots. He also has surprised me with how confident he can pick up the ball and drive straight to the hole.
Very underrated player.

i'm of the mind that we should talk about good things during this amazing stretch we've been waiting for 6 years, but i can't stop myself when people are riding the high so much that it's time to flatter even iwundu.
c'mon guys. he shot better and got more aggressive on second half of the season, only for the scrub that he is. he is barely in the rotation and he is the first guy we should immediately replace. he only plays in the NBA because we have a glaring hole at the 3, and management thought it was time to move on from mario because cap reasons or something. in the toronto game he messed up pretty quickly in the first half by getting 3 fouls and missing assignments, so fournier had to return to game pretty quickly, not even resting 5 minutes. which was a good thing, because that was the moment we started our run. seriously, i understand we have so much love to spare right now, but iwundu?

You're talking about one game and some bad calls. You want to see what a scrub looks like... look at Jonathan Simmons. Wes is turning into a solid role player.

Re: Wes Iwundu
Iwundu can guard the 1-4 positions. He's become very reliable finishing at the basket, immense improvement from a year ago. And yep, he's hitting shots now. Didn't look scared yesterday.

Re: Wes Iwundu
He had all the moves early in the year and the ball wasn't going in. Now the shots are falling and his confidence is growing.
Not sure if my tweet helped him or if he reads them. It was after a tough shooting night and his averages were really low. I tweeted him to keep taking those open threes and right after that he went on a roll.

Re: Wes Iwundu
All three of those guys off the bench is a hell of a defensive unit, and contribute just enough offensively.

Probably you used to say the same thing about Bruce Bowen when the Spurs were winning a lot of NBA Championships, right?

Re: Wes Iwundu
I love the growth Wes has shown. Last year he didn't look like he'd last long. But this season he's doing everything you need out of bench depth. Great defender, handles the ball well, willing passer, growing rim attacker and can now reliably hit the open 3s that get sent his way.
Our bench unit is a heart and hustle squad. They're not the most skilled, but they give you their all every night. And Iwundu is a big part of that. Love the guy.

Re: Wes Iwundu
Growing into a very Doug Christie-ish player and I love that. I like that he's not trying to be something that he's not and he knows his role. You need ego less guys on the bench. ...and he does a great job being a cheerleader on the bench too. Loved the pick at the time and he's become a useful player. That's good for a second round pick.
I have hope that Frazier will eventually turn out too.

Iwundu is a legit NBA player who can guard 4 positions at an elite level. He is the kind of player you continue to invest in.

Re: Wes Iwundu
If his three-point shot is for real, he will be in this league for a long time. He has the building blocks of a very efficient offensive player (threes, FTs), and he has the length and athleticism to develop into a pretty good defender.

Poppycock.
Wes has come on strong over the second half of the season. Reminder that he remains just a second year player who upped his 3 point shooting to 37% (admittedly on low volume) and whose hustle and spirit have been infectious on this team. Wes's minutes have increased as the season has moved along from about 16 in the early season to a relatively consistent 20 per game in February and March (and into April). That's due to his consistent effort on defense and his shot improving. I hate to break this to you -- but Wes this year has been more impactful for the Magic was than Mario has ever been for any team.
Regarding Toronto, he got the first-time-in-the-playoffs whistle against him on 3 fouls in the first half in 4 minutes -- all of which were either highly questionable or just awful calls. I thought he played generally well in the game -- hit a 3 had a steal and made both of his free throws. Kawhi got a star call against him and the other 2 fouls were very questionable charges.
Feel free to continue to hate on Iwundu but, from my perspective, his performances have been generally impressive and I have personally been inspired by all the work he has put into each game.

Re: Wes Iwundu
He's turned into a guy you can put out there to give someone a rest and don't have to worry about him. He's going to play hard and solid defense and take advantage of whatever he gets offensively. Many 2nd round picks don't even make an opening night roster let alone get minutes in a playoff game.

Re: Wes Iwundu
Really impressed with Wes especially after I called him a scrub in summer league this year. If he keeps hitting shots and learns to pass out of his sometimes overly aggressive drives, he'll be a great 7/8th guy off the bench for a long time.
