Leafs struggle to build vs. Tampa?

Post#1 » by North_of_Border » Tue Dec 11, 2018 2:40 am

The leafs about second year into competing after building a strong young core. Yet by year 3 they are facing a problem. They can’t pay all their players and might need to shed weight. In the “3rd” year of winning.

Camo are that to Tampa. They also went through a similar rebuild and got a nice young core together. Yet they compete for a champion every year for years now and they look like they will for many more. Look at all the stars on their team. Arguably more than Toronto. Yet they are locking everyone up and there not much talk of losing stars due to salary cap issues.

I guess we'll have to see what Marner makes v Brayden Point to see if we're getting ripped off. I just think that Tampa is further along. Looking at their cap it seems like they've committed long term to several players into their 30s. The Leafs really only have Tavares on a pricey deal that takes him into his mid-30s.

The Leafs problem is more that their young guys started producing earlier than some other teams players have. Chicago won a cup very early before Toews/Kane got their extensions and then built off that. The TB Lightning have had a plethora of young talent but they've developed slowly while others carried the team which has spread the contracts out. The Leafs basically had Marner, Matthews and Nylander all come up for extensions within a 12 month period which is where the crunch has happened. They are lucky they signed Gardiner, Kadri and even Rielly early on which is where they saved some money.

The contract that's hurting them right now is the Marleau deal. It was a good signing but they overpaid and that's crunched some money temporarily.

I'm not jealous of Tampa's salary cap situation anymore
