I think Dunc'd On was right yesterday when they said that we're not commited enough to getting the ball out of Lillard's and McCollum's hands. We're acting like we're trapping them, but especially on Lillard Russ is not on time and it leads to Adams being on an island.
Last postseason, the Pelicans managed to hold those two guys to the following numbers:
FGA per 100: Lillard 21.3 | McCollum 24.2
TOV per 100: Lillard 4.8 | McCollum 2.8
USG%: Lillard 24.9 | McCollum 25.3
The first two games:
FGA per 100: Lillard 27.0 | McCollum 30.4
TOV per 100: Lillard 5.1 | McCollum 4.0
USG%: Lillard 31.8 | McCollum 32.8
Their whole offense is those two guys. We can't allow them to finish a combined 59 % of Portland's possessions when both of them are on the floor. Russ can't be trailing the play before the defense even started. Ferguson can't be picking up cheap fouls within a couple of minutes.
If we manage to put more pressure on them, we also have to hope that they won't continue making everything while we miss everything. Per pbpstats.com, McCollum has outperformed his expected eFG% by 3 percentage points while Lillard has outperformed his 2. Meanwhile, Schröder has underperformed his by 18 percentage points, George by 2 percentage points, Russ by 19, Ferguson by 16 and Grant by 39 (!).
"I don't know of any player that, when the shot goes up, he doesn't want it to go in," Donovan said
