What an absolute slam dunk pick John Collins was. Honestly, I was quite shocked he was available at 19... so many crap players were picked ahead of him.

He's our best player right now. Trae's been amazing, but we needed John back before we started looking competent.

I think I agree with you. It's just hard to say. Certainly, early in the season, Collins was clearly the best guy on the roster. But then Trae grew up. And now, when Collins sits, Trae still balls out and leads the team toward a win. When Trae sits, all hell breaks loose. Maybe that says more about the PG backups vs the Bigs backups, but I'm not sure. I think it's probably a toss up right now as to who is better between Trae and Collins. I'd still give the nod to JC, but I think it's close.

They are both equally yoked. They need each other, they perform best with each other than without.

There is a perception that 2nd year players shouldn't qualify for MIP, I disagree.

I’m splitting tier two into two sub-tiers: Starter-level players with potential scheme-changing impact, and those who will probably peak out as complimentary players on good teams or lead guys on bad teams. This group is the latter.

6. John Collins | PF | Wake Forest

19th overall pick; 2017 Final Big Board Ranking: 34

I really undervalued Collins as a finisher and playmaker because of his black hole role for the Demon Deacons. He was a player I was completely out on, but he quickly made many a believer with his efficiency and athleticism as a pick-and-roll dive man. Collins probably won’t top out as much more than what he has been over the past two years, but he’s a player in a role that has value next to an elite shooting point guard, and is going to look even better on a good team. Collins is basically mini-Amar’e, and seeing him next to peak Trae Young is going to be incredible.

I hope he spends a lot of time this summer working on his 3 point shot. I'd like to see that improve a bit. That would make his PnR with Trae even more deadly. Plus help spread the floor when he isn't in the play.

I think you have to be blind not to put him in the category of potential All-Stars. There are no guarantees but that is already built into the word "potential." I like how the article writer puts him in a category with no All-Star potential then says:

Collins is basically mini-Amar’e

You mean 5x All-NBA, 6x All-Star Amar'e?
