Wow, just saw a clip from Charles Barkley stating that Jokic should be the front runner for MVP.

Canned in Denver.

With last night's fantastic Triple-Double, Joker is averaging 20.1ppg/10.4rpg/7.7spg. As his game continues to grow, i can see him going beyond JUST a 20/10 big, he has a strong opportunity to be the next (and youngest ?) guy to average a triple double.

He can score 20 plus in his sleep, but sometimes its like he's playing mind games , at the beginning of every season .

That 7.7 assists already put him well beyond a standard 20/10 big even if the so called media and experts are too dumb to see it, we all know how great he is.

Not sure where else to post it, but I heard a Jokic interview on the Ringer podcast. It's the first interview I've heard him to that wasn't a post-game interview.

Great interview, thanks! I like that his English is improving, so he can express himself better. Smart and funny, great guy. Still not accepting the leader role, tho.

if my math is correct he needs to get 17 assists tomorrow to average the triple double... for those that care.

I would be happy with 12 and the win, he can worry his triple double average in the next round.

Tony Brothers is the referee tonight. He ejected Jokic vs Clippers and Pacers.

Is it Casual?

I don't get you. He was tossed by Brett Nansel, the other two were Zarba and Twardoski.

Look, I am nervous every game I see Brothers officiating us but Manolito was just wrong.

Well, most of the Nuggets' faithful already believe he's the best center in the NBA today. Others are beginning to believe. How many are already believing he'll be the best player in the next series? :cowboy:

NuggetsWY often talked on this forum that Joker usage rate is actually not enough high, and I often complained about his playing time and bad fit with Barton. In the last five games, you can see what happens when Malone fix these mistakes.

mcmurphy wrote:The thing that changed the post-season of Denver.

Last 5 games of Jokic, after Craig has been inserted into starting lineup:

39.0 mpg, 29.2ppg (ts% 0.603, usg% 29.9), 11.8reb, 8.1ast, 1.6 stl, 1.4 blk, 1.4 to, 3.2 pf

the 3 games before:

36.0 mpg, 17.7ppg (ts% 0.612, usg% 21.3), 11.7reb, 9.7ast, 1.3 stl, 0.0 blk, 2.3 to, 3.3 pf

In the first 3 games Barton in the starting lineup had a usg%= 21.8 greater of Jokic.
In the last 5 games Craig had a usg%= 8.8

The 13% of more possessions consumed by Barton in the starting lineup they ended up mostly in the hands of Jokic.

Jokic is great so far, considering this is his playoff debut. His biggest problem is not defense but lack of killer instinct. The same player which is the team's the only star and which scored 43 and 37 points in the previous 3 games started next game (yesterday) with just one single FG attempt in the whole 1st quarter!?

But it is not the first time during this playoff that Jokic has the cold and lazy start of the game. Coach Malone didn't prepare Nikola Jokic at all for playoff efforts with him playing just 31mpg for a franchise player. Jokic averages this playoff 37.8 minutes per game, but during the whole regular season, Jokic played only 3 games 37.8+ minutes (including all overtime games). So Jokic often started 1st quarters in this playoff games without too much intensity in offense and defense both, and several times in the final 4th quarter fatigue problem was obvious because he is previously in his career not prepared to play 37+mpg games on a constant basis. If we split Jokic stats for 1st and 4th quarters only we can see a decent 35mpg 18-11-6 TS%50% all-star level center (or close). But if we take look on his joint 2nd and 3rd quarters production during 2019 playoff, we can see nothing less than MVP level 40mpg 29-12-11 TS%67% monster!

Image

According to these numbers, Jokic actually doesn't need to improve his game at all in the future, just to be physically ready to play (at least) 3 quarters on the highest level and intensity in a 38+mpg game instead of 2!

Id agree that the team and Jokic play much better when Jokic is looking to score as well as to pass. Scoring threats open up passing opportunities.
Apart from that and his hesitation to take open 3 pointers probably because he isnt confident in his consistency as a long range shooter id say that his major weakness is verticality. He would be a much better defender if he could contest more of the drives to the rim. On the offensive side his inability to be a lob threat hinders him in the PnR. If he became a better athlete he would be unstoppable.

My wish list for Jokics future development:

Trim the fat and bulk up a bit without losing much weight. This should give him more athletic ability to work with.
Develop jumping ability. Part of it is strength and part of it is technique. Jokic coul improve both.
Practice 3 point shooting and be more aggressive as a scorer in general.

According to nba.com official Efficiency Index (EFF) Nikola Jokic is leading 2019-playoff player so far this season with 36.2 (followed by 32.6 Durant, 31.5 Leonard, 28.7 Antetokounmpo, 27.6 Embiid, 26.4 Lillard, 26.1 Harden... etc...). Historically speaking, after 1977 when NBA and ABA finally merged, only LeBron James (3), Michael Jordan (2), Hakeem Olajuwon (2), David Robinson (1), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (2) have some playoff seasons with 36+ EFF index!
