As a Lions fan:

1. Trade down from #8

2. White or Bush at LB to team with Jarrad Davis.

3. Ed Oliver (doubt he’s still on the board at 8)

In the end, we are the lions..

I was the biggest Barry Sanders fan on the planet. Similar to Trae, I started following Sanders when he was in college. I was a freshman at OU and he was a junior at OSU. I watched his first game that year on TV and instantly fell in love. Followed him to the NFL and became an instant Lions fan.

Let me tell you, the 10 years I spent following the Detroit Lions were the most brutal 10 years of sports fandom in my life. There isn't a worse organization in sports, at least during that time.

But we're not talking about an experienced head coach here. We're talking about a rookie HC, who like practically EVERY other assistant who got a HC gig, had a "good reputation." Which, like the word "potential," "good reputation" and all the other spin just means you haven't done anything yet.

And yet, how many more rookie HCs eventually prove all that initial positive fluff to be, in fact, fluff... and lose their jobs eventually, never to be seen in the main seat again... ?

It's not wrong to say, "I need more information."

And it's not even clear why it would be important to try to discredit that position. Is it really that bad of an indictment of Pierce? Maybe if you're Lloyd Pierce's mom, it's hurtful to read that, but otherwise... ?

Btw... "20 year old freshman and sophomores just magically morphed into superior versions of themselves well ahead of schedule"... so, in your world I take it, it isn't all that common that young players at that age improve?

Okay. Appears I have so much to learn yet about that world.

CLP was assistant coach in charge of player development for Cavs '07-'10. LBJ's Semis/ECFs/Finals teams. James has been quoted as saying Pierce was his "favorite coach" in the NBA. Coached Steph in GS in his early years, assistant coach, head of player development, see Steph Curry, he's currently a "thing." Grizzlies assistant coach in charge of player development 2011-13, Conley/Gasol/Gay. Assistant Coach in charge of player development, 2013-18, Philadelphia 76ers, see "The Process", also refernce 2019 EC Semifinalists (so far). 2018-19, Head Coach Atlanta Hawks, see advanced/accelerated development of Young/Huerter/Collins/Len/Bembry. This is very UNlike "practically EVERY other assistant who got a HC gig", no spin, no fluff. Young players, at that age, improve with great coaching. Without it, they develop bad habits and flounder and/or stagnate.

Pierce has given insights into his coaching Philosophy and player development. A players self improvement along with coaching matters.

“We were looking for someone that had a track record of working with young players and making them better, and obviously Lloyd checked that box,” Schlenk told Dime. “We were looking for someone who kind of understands what we’re going to be going through and have the right mindset, experiences to be able to keep it upbeat environment, up in locker room, and Lloyd checks that, and he’s exceeded our expectations on that front.”

As a coaching staff, when we go through development, we’ve got to put guys in a position where, this is what we’re focusing on. We’ve got to educate them on what we’re focusing on and we’ve got to work on it. So, the collaboration, that innovative collaboration, that we speak of involves a number of people, but what you’re doing is connecting the entire organization, from front office to analytics to coaching to training staff.”

“A coach has its biggest impact during times of failure,” Pierce says. “I’m not going to grab Trae after leading the country in scoring and assists last year and grab him in June and say, ‘we need to change your shot.’ That’s the worst thing you can do to a player. But when he shoots 20 percent in November, we’re not going to change your shot, but we need to do some work. And guess what? He’s looking at 20 percent, you’re showing him 20 percent, he can’t say no. So part of the process is, it isn’t linear, and it isn’t going to go in one direction. When it does go down, you’ve got to take advantage of that moment and get the guy back into a place where he’s going to work his way out of it and pick up some different habits and clean up some habits and perfect what he’s doing.”

Right after the NCAA tournament, and the end of the season there was reason to look at the mocks.

Right after the lottery, there will be some reason to look at the mocks.

But this in-between period?

At this stage, it's called click bait.

Draft Profile: Matisse Thybulle

  • Name: Matisse Thybulle
  • Age: 22
  • Height: 6’5″
  • Weight: 195
  • College: Played four years for the Washington Huskies.
  • Accolades: 2019 Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, 2019 Lefty Driesell Award winner, 2019 NCAA season steals leader, 2019 First-Team All-PAC-12, Two-Time PAC-12 Defensive Player of the Year (2018-2019), Two-Time Pack-12 All-Defensive Team (2018-2019), PAC-12 career steals leader

Thybulle was considered by many to be the nation’s best defender this season, and he certainly deserved the recognition. Using his athleticism and 7’1″ wingspan, Thybulle was an absolute terror while playing in coach Mike Hopkins’s 2-3 zone defense. His quick hands allowed him to average an NCAA-leading 3.5 steals per game. Despite being just 6’5″, Thybulle averaged an impressive 2.2 blocks per game. Not only is Thybulle is one of only three players to average at least two steals and two blocks in the past 20 years, he’s the only college player average three steals and two blocks per game over that same span. He does an excellent job of not only being in the right place of defense, but actively disrupting the opposing team’s offense and forcing them into bad shots.

While Thybulle is much more of a work in progress on the offense end, there are also positive signs there. He shot 78% from the free throw line for his college career, capped off by an impressive 85% this season. While he shot just 30.8% from deep this season, Thybulle has shot 35.8% on threes for his career, attempting more than four a game over each of the last three seasons. He also does a solid job of scoring in transition, as well as moving without the ball, and is a high I.Q. (if not polished) player on both ends of the floor.

As great as Thybulle is defensively, there are still a few concerns on that end. Most importantly, while he is obviously a terrific defender, how much have Thybulle’s defensive statistics been inflated by playing in a 2-3 zone defense. He has no left hand to speak of, and doesn’t really create for himself or others. Most of his drives are of the simple line drive variety, and struggles with both shooting and finishing off the dribble. While Thybulle isn’t a bad passer and typically moved the ball well within the flow of Washington’s offense, he isn’t going to actually initiate much of the offense at the NBA level.

The Surprise 2019 Draft Prospect Each NBA Lottery Team Could Target

Atlanta Hawks: Bol Bol (Oregon, C, Freshman)

Image

What if Bol Bol's foot checks out fine by medical reports and doctors?

He was making a top-five case before the fracture, having averaged 21.0 points while shooting 13-of-25 from behind the arc.

The Atlanta Hawks could have two top-10 picks, owning the Dallas Mavericks' top-five protected first-rounder. With one of those selections, it could make sense for Atlanta to gamble on the upside tied to Bol's 7'2" size, effortless shooting range, post scoring fluidity, finishing and shot-blocking.

John Collins could enjoy the space Bol creates by stretching the floor from the 5 position. He'd also give Trae Young an enormous target off pick-and-rolls, pops and penetration.

And though Atlanta's coaching staff would have to work on his defensive effort and reads, Bol's monster 7'8" wingspan would be useful in rim protection.

If we’re taking a flier on an injury-concern C, I’d rather it be Jontay Porter in the 2nd round and use the Mav’s pick for a 2nd wing. As in Cam/Hunter or Cam/Culver.

I'm pro-Bol. He's one of only 4 in this draft that I think have a chance at elite-hood.

And Liver, is there some new information that has come up since UVA/TX Tech that should prompt a mock drafter to publish a new mock draft? Did I miss something? Did you have any actual substance/rationale/opinion to object to my observation? I'm listening. Even interested. Or is it enough to you to just roll your eyes and see if someone chuckled?

You sure post a lot. A lot. ;)

Big takeaway from this weekend... there's a LOT of movement that can happen in even the last two weeks before a draft. My Cowboys took a guy with a round 4/5 grade on him for a lot of mock drafters with their 2-#58.

Bol, or virtually anyone you see in anyone's top 20-25 can potentially force their way into the top 10, especially in this draft where the 3rd tier is so undefined... and by the same token, anyone not named Zion is potentially going to be taken a few slots below where most mock drafters are currently slotting them.

Am I totally CRAZY for wanting to see the Hawks draft Bol Bol with their 2nd 1st Round Pick? I just feel like IF he can stay healthy and IF he can get a little (Maybe, A Lot!) stronger he could be really Special! Kind of like swinging for the fences (You might hit a Home Run or you might Strike out) BUT at least you TRIED!! The Hawks may never get a chance to get a player like Bol Bol again! Just my thoughts! I am probably way off on this one (Just be glad that I am NOT the Hawks GM!!!)!

Return to Atlanta Hawks
