This is the problem when fans get a hold of the books. Everything is short sighted. Yes, with or without Vuc, the Magic have the same amount to spend THIS offseason. But what about next offseason, or the season after that or the season after that or who knows how long his deal will be... There are repercussion for signing Vuc to a huge deal that go beyond just THIS offseason.

If his contract is so big that he becomes untradeable, then that is a bad deal for us that will set us back another half a decade.

So what is the truth about our cap space?

If we renounced everyone (which is very unlikely), we would have roughly $85 million in committed salary against a cap that is estimated at $109 million next year. There are some additional placeholders that eat up another $5 million or so (draft picks and empty roster spots); which puts us somewhere south of $20 million in available cap space.

Cap holds are contract estimates that act as placeholders for players that are either restricted or for which the team holds their bird rights. Every player that isn't renounced (Birch, Ross, Vucevic, etc...) eats away at that available space. The cap holds for Vucevic and Ross account for almost $35 million. Without renouncing them, we are well over the cap and have no available cap space. Additionally, if we choose to re-sign them for sums that exceed the salary cap, that will eat away at next year's cap space that would otherwise be freed up by the expirations of the contracts of Mozgov and Augustin.
