Re: Official Trade Thread -- Part XXXVII
This year, in something over 1000 minutes, Brandon Clarke scored 24.1 points per 40 minutes at a Total Scoring % of .699.
R.J. Barrett, OTOH, outscored Brandon Clarke -- he posted 25.7 points per 40 minutes. He did it at a Total Scoring % of .532.
What that means is that to give his team 1.6 more points than Brandon Clarke, all R.J. Barrett had to do was take 6.5 more shots than Clarke.
6.5 shots create 1.5 more points. Oh, & he also had to take .7 extra FTAs as well).
Now... I'm being totally unfair, I know that. Barrett is 18 years old. Clarke is 22. If Brandon Clarke played the way R.J. Barrett played this season, he wouldn't be drafted at all. He also wouldn't make a team as an undrafted player. Which is why it's great that Clarke did not play that way!
Obviously, at 18, it's not as big a problem to play at the level Barrett played at. But... that doesn't make it a good thing, does it?
Yet, according to thricethefun, he's "gonna be an all star." Not he "might be an all star." & according to prime1time, he "will get a lot better." Not "he'll improve -- & maybe he'll improve by a lot."
Hey... you know what? They might be right. Both of them might be right! Then again... they might not be right. They might be wrong.
We just looked at the 2011 & 2012 drafts. A bunch of guys who were taken high because they were going to "get a lot better" & "gonna be all stars," but, huh!, it just didn't turn out that way.
Still... it might for Barrett. Or not. But, here's what I don't understand. If the big problem with Clarke is that he doesn't shoot the 3 well... why are we interested in R.J. Barrett, who managed a .308 % shooting the college 3 this year (not the NBA 3)? Moreover, he also shot .665 from the line.
IOW, why are you so sure that Barrett is "quality," thricethefun? I'm not saying he won't be, btw -- I just don't know why I am supposed to... just take him -- "Don't overthink it." I'd like to understand where your confidence comes from.
Again, that question is not about a comparison with Clarke. Not at all. Nobody is suggesting that if we have the #3 pick we should nab Brandon Clarke! I just don't understand why anyone has this level of confidence in R.J. Barrett's future.

Barrett gives me a real Wiggins vibe. Although I think he'll have a better career than Wiggins has (so far), I'm not sure how much better.
Of the projected top ten players in the lottery that appear in most mocks at the moment, I'm the iffy-est on Doumbouya and Barrett.

I don't really get a Wiggins vibe other than both are big strong athletes. Wiggins just doesn't really enjoy the game of basketball. His problem isn't talent, it's a lack of desire to improve his game.
I don't get that sense from Barrett at all. Barrett wants to be great. My concern about Barrett is that he really isn't that skilled and doesn't have a great feel for the game. He is turnover prone and a poor shooter. I think he will be a low efficiency scorer for a while before he figures things out. And even when he does figure things out, he might end up being an empty stats kind of guy like a Tyreke Evans or Zach LaVine.
But I don't think he'll disappear like Wiggins. He'll go the other way. He'll try and do too much too soon.

I think that has certainly been exposed in Wiggins now. But i dont remember him being questioned like that when he was drafted. My memory of the consensus around the Wiggins Love trade was that the Wolves got far more for Love than he was worth.

Nate, You are overrating Wiggins skill set. He is not a "Big strong athlete". He is an elite volleyball player/high jumper, not basketball athlete. He has poor lateral quickness, poor balance, and poor strength... Those are very important issues that are only exacerbated by his poor IQ and work ethic.

Fair enough. "Athletic" is a subjective word. When I said athlete, I was mostly talking about running, jumping, and overall quick-twitchedness coupled with a good strong frame. Wiggins has that. He looks the part.

Has this been posted yet? I might be late. It's bleacher report, so take it with the tiniest grain of salt ever.
*edit*- Never mind. Some idiot was playing with the ESPN TC and thought it was worth turning into an article. This is why I consider BR to be just a fan blog and not a real NBA news site.

NBA Rumors: Nuggets Could Acquire Bradley Beal In Three-Team Deal With Suns, Wizards, Per ‘Bleacher Report’

The Denver Nuggets are currently battling against the Portland Trail Blazers in the Western Conference Semifinals. After a 116-112 Game 4 victory on Sunday night at Moda Center, the Nuggets have succeeded to even the series with the Trail Blazers at 2-2. As of now, Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets only have one goal in mind and that is to win the franchise’s first NBA championship title.
If they fell short of achieving their main goal, the Nuggets are expected to find ways to improve their roster in the 2019 NBA offseason. According to Dan Favale of Bleacher Report, one of the potential trade targets for the Nuggets next summer is Bradley Beal of the Washington Wizards. Beal has said in numerous occasions that he wants to retire as a Wizards.
However, at this point in his NBA career, most people believe that Bradley Beal will be better off being traded to a team who has a strong chance of contending for the NBA championship title than staying on a mediocre team like the Wizards. As Favale noted, Beal will be a “dream fit” alongside Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic.
“Bradley Beal is a dream fit beside Denver’s 7-footer. Spending his entire career next to John Wall has prepared him for the duality needed to complement Jokic. He is shooting better than 40 percent on catch-and-fire threes since 2016-17, and he’s a deceptively slippery cutter. At the same time, he’s a more consistent from-scratch initiator than Murray or Will Barton. Close to 50 percent of his buckets went unassisted this season, and Washington posted a 117.3 offensive rating in the 1,304 possessions he played without Wall and Tomas Satoransky.”
To acquire Bradley Beal, Favale suggested that the Nuggets could engage in a three-team deal with the Wizards and the Phoenix Suns next summer. In the proposed trade deal by Bleacher Report, the Nuggets will receive Beal, the Suns get Jamal Murray, and the Wizards will acquire Mikal Bridges, De’Anthony Melton, Mason Plumlee, Michael Porter Jr., Torrey Craig, 2020 first-round pick, and a 2020 second-round pick. The deal works on ESPN‘s NBA Trade Machine.
If the trade becomes a reality, it will not only be beneficial for the Nuggets but also for the Wizards and the Suns. The Suns will finally acquire a starting caliber point guard they have been missing since the start of the 2018-19 NBA season. The 22-year-old Jamal Murray will be an incredible addition to the Suns since he fits well with the timeline of the face of the franchise, Devin Booker.
Meanwhile, in exchange for Bradley Beal, the Wizards will receive young and talented players that will help them speed up the rebuilding process. However, before they can even start going on a different route, the Wizards should first find a team who’s willing to absorb John Wall and his lucrative contract.

Yeah, it's usually not a good sign when a team is trading 1 guy and getting back 10.

The best asset were getting is an injured guy that's barely played in the last two years.

I think Barrett's biggest issue to me is the lack touch on his jump shots. He had some really ugly misses. But then again, he does display better touch around the rim, finishing often with guys draped on him. So is it just the matter of repetition or will he always struggle with his shot? He's a straight line driver like Wiggins and doesn't have a ton of wiggle so efficiency may become an issue if he's making jump shots at a 30% clip.

They play Simmons out of position. He should be used as a high-post big man. I'd play him at center.

Butler and Embiid don't fit well with Simmons because they aren't good shooters and need the ball. Philly focused too much on getting talent instead of fit.
It would be intriguing to get Simmons here and see the new GM build the team around him. Wall is obviously a problem but he's a problem in any scenario.

I wouldn't trade Beal for Simmons. You'd be making a conference rival better by trading them one of the top SGs in the game and you'd be taking on the problem of teaming two bad shooters (Wall & Simmons).
Wall and Beal is a much better fit than Wall and Simmons. We don't need to go the route that you say Philly has by focusing on talent and ignoring fit.

That's why I said it would be intriguing but not necessarily a move I'd make. I do believe though there's a way to make it work as long as you have shooters and high IQ players.
Beal wants to win and will leave in 2 years unless we get Zion and/or a true Wizard as GM. Ideally you trade him to western conference and get a good young player, filler and picks, I guess. Straight swap for Anthony Davis works too (as long as he re-signs).

Yes, what a mistake Philly made acquiring talent instead of fit. I mean... what does that get you? 52 wins followed by 51 wins & R2 of the playoffs where you're down 3-2? What's that?
What's that especially compared to the "much better fit" of Wall & Beal. I mean... there was a year when we actually won 49 games -- what team has ever done that I wonder?
Good Lord... Philly is down to the Raptors in R2, because Joel Embiid is sick as a dog. Period. Imagine what that team would be if the Colangelo idiots had stayed a #3 in '17 instead of trading up to make the 2d worst #1 pick in the last quarter century. (After ownership insisted on making one of the worst ever #3 picks two years earlier)
The Wizards, on the other hand, are a terrible team; we have very very little talent on our roster; talent is exactly what we need, & any trade that increased our talent would be one we should jump at.
As to the trade, I haven't seen a report that Philly wants Beal over Simmons, have you?
Even if there were ever a reason to focus on fit over talent (there never is), I'd say that doing anything at all based on fit with John Wall would be quite a long shot. Talk about "ignoring" something... how about ignoring the fact that it's a long shot for him to come back as the player he was at his best.

It is possilbe to focus on both fit AND talent. That's why Milwaukee is where they are. Philly has more talent than Milwaukee, imo.
Philly will need to make a decision on Redick. He's a 34/35 year old free agent. If they don't keep him, they'll NEED to acquire a top 3 point shooting threat, or they will regress.
