Re: Summer 2019 Free Agency Thread
Any way we can get Kyrie's ear this offseason? He's clearly a loser if your best player, but he wouldn't be here.
Resign Butler, add Kyrie. Kyrie solves nearly all of the Ben Simmons conundrum. Ben becomes Draymond/Pippen.

We can't afford Kyrie and Jimmy. Jimmy is going to be a max player. Kyrie will be, too. If we re-sign Jimmy and renounce every other free agent except Ben (and assume Ennis declines his option, and stretch JSimmons' guaranteed $1M), we have $27,473,728 in cap space. $5mil short of what we would need to max Kyrie.
In order to get both Jimmy and Kyrie (or insert other max player here), all of the following happen:
* We need Jimmy and Kyrie (or other max player) to both take slight discounts (a little less than 10%) in order to fit both of them
* Our bench would consist of Zhaire, Bolden, one MLE player, this year's draft picks, and the rest are minimum-salary guys
* We don't have JJ, Mike Scott, Ennis, Boban, or TJ unless they come back for the minimum or MLE.

Run. It. Back.
I'd bring back the whole top-7 (Unless some team is going to legit pay Ennis off that run)
TJ and Boban get minimum offers, but probably find more money elsewhere (although you'd assume teams have to have caught on that Bobi is unplayable in the playoffs right?).
Convert Shake.
Try to find some guys with 3+D role player potential with those picks.
Find a rotational point guard and center with the MLE/BAE (Beverly, Collision, Hill, Joseph, Evans, Dedmon, Noel, Lopez, Vonleh, O'Quinn...)

Re: Summer 2019 Free Agency Thread
Why would Dedmon take the MLE? He played on a 2-yr $14M contract the past two seasons. And that was *before* he turned himself into a 3pt shooter. Incidentally, Dedmon is the counterexample for people who say players never add a skill.
Dedmon's 3pt shooting from 2013-2017: 0-1. He took one single 3pt shot in four seasons.
Dedmon's 3pt shooting from 2017-2019: 133-358 (37%). Averaging more than 3 attempts per game the past two seasons.
May Ben find such success.
Dedmon looks like someone who will get $10mil+ and will probably want the longest contract he can get considering he's 29. This will probably be his last big payday, and while he's an NBA millionaire, he probably hasn't made so much that he prefers a chance at a ring over a bigger payday.
The MLE was $8.6mil this year and will go up, but will probably still be below Dedmon's market value.

If you could actually get another legit max guy to sign up for that, I think it would be worth doing and then peacemealing a bench together.

If you can get Kawhi or KD to take Butler's spot, do that. Otherwise, run it back.

Run it back for sure with the top 4. Sign Butler and Tobias. It will probably take the full 5yr max for both.
I would certainly try to sign JJ, but someone else may throw a ton of cash at him. Never know. He makes $12.25 this year. Hopefully we can bring him back for $10 or less.
Mike Scott and Ennis are both free agents. Try to bring them back, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them get big paydays somewhere else.
Boban made $7mil. I would bring him back but hopefully not at that price. He's playable in the regular season, and even dominant against certain second units. As we've seen from this year's playoffs, the single most important factor in our success is Embiid's health. There should simply be a blanket "no back-to-backs" rule for Joel. And when he does play, 32 minutes should be his limit. With those restrictions, a 3rd string center matters and Boban is better than anything we'd find for a minimum contract. It's actually kind of good that Boban played so poorly this playoffs... makes it more likely that we can re-sign him for cheap. (Although him playing well enough that we beat the Raptors would have been a better outcome.)
TJ was on a minimum. I'd offer him another minimum or maybe a slight bump, but he should be the 3rd string point guard unless some other team wants to pay him.
Don't bring back Amir or Greg Monroe or Furkan.
Jonathon Simmons may actually be our best trade piece if we find something worth trading a pick for. I wouldn't bring him back, but it may worth it to guarantee his contract just to have outgoing salary to pair with a pick. Because we have more needs than we have assets.
For JJ, Scott, Ennis, Boban, and TJ, hopefully we can get all of them plus a couple other pieces while still staying under the luxury tax. I'm not sure if that's possible, though. A big reason to stay below the luxury tax is that the MLE is lower if we're a taxpayer. Offering ~$9M is better than offering ~$6M if you're trying to lure that one last piece to the team. We'd have about $21M to pay all 6 of them (those 5 plus an MLE) if we want to stay below the luxury tax line. I just don't see that working. TJ and Boban are likely to be cheap enough that we can re-sign them regardless, but who knows - maybe someone puts a big contract in front of them. For the others we are probably looking at either blowing past both the luxury tax line and the apron or letting 1 or 2 of them walk.
So this is what it looks like for next year. The question marks are there for the free agents I'd like to see us re-sign if they come cheaply enough.
Simmons / New PG / TJ?
JJ? / Zhaire / Shake
Butler / Ennis? / New Wing
Tobias / Mike Scott? / Bolden
Embiid / New C / Boban?
Plenty of holes to fill and not a lot or resources to do so. The biggest need is the starting SG if someone throws a huge contract at JJ and he walks. Hopefully that doesn't happen. Second biggest need is Embiid's backup. The resources to fill those needs:
* Draft. Plenty of picks, but none very high.
* MLE. ~$9M if we manage to stay under the luxury tax. ~$6M if we go over.
* BAE. ~$3.5M but only if we manage to stay under the luxury tax.
* Jonathon Simmons. We can guarantee his contract and have around $6M in outgoing salary to pair with a pick in a trade.
* Zhaire, Shake, and Bolden. If Zhaire or Shake take a huge leap forward, maybe one of them can be our 2nd string PG or starting SG (regardless of whether we manage to re-sign JJ). If Bolden takes a huge leap forward, maybe he can be our 2nd string C or PF.

There's no such thing as run it back.
Unless you're telling me Redick, Butler and Harris would sign 1 year deals.

Re: Summer 2019 Free Agency Thread
I know next to nothing about cap rules. Someone school me on this:
Can Butler's 19.8M player option be used as a temporary device/sort of middle ground between renouncing him for cap, and retaining him immediately on his 5/190?
Where Im going with this is, negotiate with him to pick up that option with the understanding that we will offer him his max very soon. Saves nearly 20M temporarily for us to potentially shop with. And then extend him on his 5/190 afterwards?
Or would that delay Butler's 5/190 from kicking in for another whole year? If so I suppose he wont go for it. Just a thought. Someone who understands the cap- let me know how it works.

We'd have to be crazy to bring JJ back. Imo we need a younger SG who can space the floor, defend better but also score In more ways than just the three ball. Terrence Ross, Jeremy Lamb, KCP or Reggie Bullock come to mind.

I'd love to have JJ be the 6th man.

Why not sign all 3 to multi year deals?

None of those guys shoot like JJ. Not even close.

We need more than someone who can just shoot. Because when the ball isn't falling JJ is a complete liability. A more well rounded SG takes this team to another level imo. Someone like KCP can create their own shot and shoot off the dribble which would enhance this offense I think.

Have you watched KCP play lately?
I agree, Klay Thompson would be great. But he’s not coming here.
JJ may be a liability on D, but his shooting, threat of shooting and constant off ball movement are not easily replicated. He’s criminally underrated and 1 of the most important cog’s in the offense TBH.
He will be VERY difficult to replace.

When they re-sign Butler and Harris they're gonna have not much to work with. They are gonna have to draft well and make trades, but I don't expect the bench to be much better next season.

Re: Summer 2019 Free Agency Thread
Redick has an elite, defense altering skill in his shooting. He literally changes the shape of the entire defense. That elite skill is worth more than the so called "more well rounded" SGs. We'd be much worse off with any of those guys. That said, Redick is probably at the age where the decline is coming soon and in a blink of an eye. I think he's got one more year at his current level and then a significant drop.
I hope we bring him back as a 6th man.

Re: Summer 2019 Free Agency Thread
So my 'ideal' plan will probably change about 10 times between now and the season, but I'm actually more interested in bringing back the band then I thought i would be after a loss.
- I would hope to bring JJ back in more a 6th man capacity (I also think he'd be willing to do this since he was this past season)--I think this is the year we offer him more than one year (he knows he is going to be declining), so we start at 10 and go down over a couple years.
- I would resign Scott & Ennis (i think they both come back on decent deals)
- I offer Boban a pretty small deal.If i remember right, after his time with the Spurs, he was willing to take a small deal to stay becasue he was happy, but Pop encouraged him to get his money, and he signed a bigger deal. I think if he's happy here, he'd stay for less.
- Z.Smith / Shake / Bolden will all hopefully be able to get some more time.
- I offer TJ the min, just cause he's a great teammate, but i think someone gives him more, maybe we see if the euro stash can make it? Or we look to draft an athletic defensive guy in the 2nd?
I don't think that Dedmon comes here for the MLE to be a back up, after a great year as a starter. I think he wants his paycheck, and somebody will give him waaay to much money. I do think Beverly is an option at the MLE, so then i throw picks or roster spots on bigs.
MLE- Beverly
1st - Mfiondu Kabengele
Simmons / Shake / TJ or Micic
Beverly / Reddick / Smith
Butler / Ennis
Harris / Scott / Bolden
Embiid / Boban / Kabengele / Lessort?
