John Beilien to the Cavaliers

Unbelievable! Tom Gores really messed up now! That’s the biggest opportunity the Pistons missed out on. Beilien is one of the best coaches in college basketball and Michigan just lost him. This really hit hard being a Michigan and Pistons fan. This is a really sad and upsetting loss. This is horrible news for both programs. Thoughts.

Obviously from a michigan perspective, this sucks. Glad he's not coming to the pistons though. We're putting our coaches in an impossible position with a win now mandate and a not-going-to-win roster.

If the cavs are really committing to a rebuild, this could be a good shot for him. He gets 3-4 years to develop guys and try to build a winning atmosphere.

He’s 66. Closer to retirement than signing an extension. He’s going there to develop players and leave. Pistons didn’t have young guys to develop or even a pick.

money for him, youth development for Cavs. could be a win-win situation.

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

As a MSU fan, this pleases me greatly.

I mean the Michigan sweep this season was great, and beating Duke was better, but this has repercussions for years.

Gilbert has proven a couple of things as an owner. One, he'll shamelessly tank. Two, he's got an itchy trigger finger. This feels like a big loss for UM and a "meh" for the Cavs, by the time the Cavs are in the playoffs in real contention again I think he'll be long gone. (though of course they'll get Zion because DG knows where the bodies are buried).

Well the Cavs got a championship out of shamelessly tanking and flipping said asset plus luck with LeBron being born in Ohio, but that's besides the point.

You basically gave a reason why this was a good hire. He'll likely retire by the end of his contract and he's been known to develop talent pretty damn well at Michigan. That's why he was hired, no? To develop Sexton and the like along with their shiny new top 4 pick.

It's a big IF of course, but who else were they going to get? Joerger isn't coming there, and the guys that are available are Lionel Collins, JKidd, and Mark Jackson?

I wish he convinced him to take the job as Pistons coach. We ended up getting Casey instead. Beilien has been successful in every situation he's been in. He's a great developmental coach and I really feel we needed that for our team even if it's temporary. Thing is Beilien at that time wanted more money and he got it from Michigan. The year after he leaves to the NBA? It's just disappointing to say the least.

Obviously Cleveland is more attractive than Detroit for him. Cleveland has zero expectations and he can develop young guys.

this team is a mediocre team with a "win now" mentality. why would JB pick Detroit? He's 66 years old and wants to see a new challenge prosper

We're done and I mean Michigan basketball. It's very sad actually. You think it'll be fun when Izzo retires? MSU will suffer the same repercussions when that happens. It's so hard to get a coach in college. Now it's basically gone and I really hope we can find a replacement. I'd pay big money to Calipari to coach Michigan. I don't think he'd leave for Michigan though. He entertained UCLA cuz it's a basketball college.

Difference between this year and last year has nothing to with Cleveland v. Detroit. Last year, Beilein still had a great team with final four aspirations. This year, the cupboard is bare and UM will have its worst team in ages. Beilein knew this was the time.

Good for Beilein. As a UM fan I'm bummed but if he wants to coach in the NBA, then get it while you can. And it seems like a perfect fit - if the Cavs are doing a rebuild, then he is a perfect coach to coach up the young players.
