for the sake of discussion. assuming KD and Kyrie go to NYC and AD goes to LAL, I think the bottom dwellers next season are:
CLE
PHO
CHI
ATL
NO
MEM (losing Conley)
CHA (losing Kemba)
The problem IMO is that people think MEM is gonna be bad next year AND 2021. I don't think that's true. Much lke SAC, I think MEM in 2021 will be an up and coming team and pick will be pretty crappy. I hope I'm wrong about that, but I think the people celebrating the fact that we didn't get that pick this year are underestimating MEM in 2021.
People don't realize how rare it is for a team to pull of what SAC did, coming into this season hey were projected as a bottom 5 team. Teams very, very rarely go from a bottom 6 team to a late lottery or playoff team in just 1 season. And as good as Morant and Jaren Jackson will be I don't know that they are making that team good at 21 years old, especially since Conley will very likely be gone by then as will JV.
Just a hat tip. You keep throwing down some solid posts.
yeah but we don't need them to be bad next season. We need them to be bad the year after that.
If they are bottom of the barrel this season, they keep their pick.
So, by 2020 offseason. they will have JJJ, Morant, 2020 top pick, AND enough cap space to sign FAs.
So the chances that they are bad in 2020/2021 (when we need them to be bad) aren't that rare....
IMO that's what people aren't realizing. MEM is going to tank like nobody's business this year because this is the year they get to keep their pick. In 2020, they are NOT going to tank (just like SAC) because WE have their pick. They'll be all out going for the playoffs at that point. They probably won't get there, but they'll more likely be in the 10-14 pick range.
that's what I'm seeing at this point anyway.
