2021 NBA Draft - High School Prospects

2019 - #8, #10, (3) second round picks
2020 - Hawks 1st round Pick, Cleveland’s Top 10 protected
2021 - Hawks 1st round Pick, Oklahoma’s Top 14 protected

2021 is when the NBA will allow the draft to include high school prospects. Schlenk should consider hoarding assets for the 2021 Draft.

Best case is the Hawks are a playoff team in 2021 and we accumulated lottery picks in 2021 and draft the next Kobe. Thoughts?

Is this official or is it still just speculation? In theory, I agree with accumulating as many 2021 options as possible within the framework of the team's success. IOW, I'm not continuing down the asset collection road in lieu of winning in the playoffs the next few seasons, but to the extent that the team can do both, I'm on board. I just haven't heard that anything was official with 2021 yet.

The NBA and NBPA would both have to agree to lower the draft-eligibility age, and the reported proposal is the first step to the two sides negotiating the change by the 2022 draft. Setting the date to 2022 would give teams time to adjust to the possible change. Adjusting the rule would allow players to enter the NBA straight out of high school and make money right away.

High School prospects in 2021 huh...Y'all think that we will care in 2021 about some high school players? Or do you think the Hawks will still be in tank mode? If we are I'm finding another team that plans to win playoff games in 2021 not lottery slots.

I don't think so, but we have OKC's 2021 1st rounder. We might make a trade for a future 2021 1st - things are always changing, nothing is static.

Because not all High schoolers are picked in the lottery.
Our very own Josh Smith was picked #17 same as Jermaine O'neal.
Hawks can trade OKC pick, their own 2021 pick and/or player to move up.
All available options.

There is nothing unique about the Hawks that gives them an advantage other than if Schlenk continues his current high % run of maximizing his first round picks which would point to the Hawks having an advantage in any draft similar to how the Spurs have enjoyed an advantage in getting talent out of the draft whether they've picked high or low. The only "advantage" we might have is by getting more assets for that draft. (In 2022 or whenever it happens).

Jay's point in the post above was that having high schooler's in the draft will make our pick more valuable that year whether it is in the lottery or not.

How much more valuble and is this worth discussing now? Never mind...I couldn't care less about the 2021 draft. I'm focused on winning the division next year.
