Re: 2020 NBA Draft
Time-zone makes it impossible for me to follow but I'll sure try to get some highlights, assuming Hampton and Lamelo or whoever else joins actually gets some decent playing time.
Lamelo now reportedly 6'6 180 (180 seems generous), he might be even weaker than T-Ferg lol

Re: 2020 NBA Draft
Here's a bit of a breakdown to RJ's team situation. I'm expecting RJ to start for New Zealand. This is their roster right now -
Import* / Loe
Delany / Ngatai / ???
Import* / Abercrombie
Webster / Weeks / ???
Hampton* / Ili
Webster is one of the more prolific on-ball scorers in the competition, and I would say NZ National Team's best player. NBA level talent, I would say on par with a Patty Mills, but injury and character issues have kinda kept him from cracking the league (also a small-combo type which is a hard archetype to crack). So an interesting back-court mate for RJ. Ili and Weeks are strong backups, enough to challenge RJ for his role but shouldn't be able to crack his role. I'm assuming RJ comfortably starts and plays big minutes.
Basically all the guys on the roster listed there (except for Weeks whose Australian), play for the NZ National Team, so they're very familiar with playing with each other and there's a really established culture within the organization. Over the last decade they've been one of the most successful teams in the comp. but they're on the downswing now, they finished 3rd last this past season.
They're allowed to add 2 more imports (maybe 3, I'm not sure if RJ counts, but obviously he's getting import money so no way they're going to pay 3 imports on top of him anyway), so expect an import 3 and 5. Last season they had Shawn Long who was great at the 5, he's changed clubs this season though, so it'll be interesting who else they add to that starting lineup.

As for LaMelo, with all the question marks surrounding him, I wouldn't expect him to start wherever he goes, but I'm sure there'll still be plenty of opportunity for him wherever he goes. We know he has the talent.
How did you guys find his play overseas? I never really followed it. My understanding is that he mostly played against terrible comp, but he occasionally moved up to the main team and played against legit comp, where he looked solid (unlike his brother). At least he has some experience playing against grown men.
The NBL is a pretty physical league, he will struggle with that, but obviously he has size, passing, speed, and passing touch. Ferguson was similarly skinny at the 2 spot, and you would obviously watch with knowing he was physically outmatched, but he still managed to compete physically with them. Hopefully that's the same for LaMelo.

Your understanding it's wrong, LaMelo played always terrible competition, and he looked bad, his brother did play some against higher level, LKL, and he was alright

Re: 2020 NBA Draft
Yeah LiAngelo actually surprised a lot of people for what I remember reading on twitter. He actually played pros and did rather well. You can check their stats on the RealGM website.
I'm guessing Lamelo would do a bit better now and his stats weren't bad for a 16/17 year-old but from what I remember reading he was only playing against bench units and still looking like he didn't belong much.

I'm almost certain that the Next Stars players don't count as an import, so they could get three.

Gelo did okay on offense, yeah, he could be a pro in a minor european league probably, he was hideous on defense though
LaMelo is just too raw when it comes to decision making, maybe he has improved but when I was in Lithuania he was terrible, barely played in LKL, he played in the Baltic league and the Ball tnmts, I don't think he is going to be able to do much in NBL, maybe as a deep bench guy

He is getting paid $0.5M, not like a next star type player, no chance they can pony up money for another 3 real imports

Can't blame him. Cant blame any star player not wanting to go anywhere near Kansas right now.

yea, unfortunate that he's gonna have to sit a year, but Self did him no favors this season. completed wasted his talent IMO.

I mean you can blame Self for mishandling wings but Grimes got way more PT than he deserved last year. He wants to be a PG but he’s not better than Dotson. That’s all this comes down too.

Grimes is bad, he might develop and be okay, but calling him a star player it's non-sensical
I hope he goes to UVA

Re: 2020 NBA Draft
Grimes was bad this season but he was a top prospect coming in to the year, there's no doubt about that one. If that 'potential' is anything tangible that he can build on next season or whether it was just misplaced hype, we'll have to see next season.

What talent? Grimes was horrible. Arguably the worst starter in the Big 12.

You had him #8 on your big board in November, it seems he wasn't clearly overrated to you at that time and you at least saw something that suggested he could be a valuable player. Not singling you out, I had him top 10 too I think pre-season (based off reputation and what footage I did watch).
DX summed up the player we thought we were getting here and paint the picture of a good guard prospect -
Again, he was no good, and I don't have high hopes for him, but I could see an outcome where he's a lot better next season. Only one way to go from here.
