Peter Jackson uses CGI like Michael Bay uses pyrotechnics. It's overly excessive, blindingly distracting, and often times completely unnecessary.

Same. I always knew it was good I just never got around to watching it. I had no idea it was based on real people.

yeah same- i knew it was a "Western" but its much more. 10/10 Just finished season 3. Sad it did not get more love at the time. Its like "the wire" when it was on it got no attention- no nominations, nothing. Now its regarded as one of the best. I would put deadwood as one of the top dramas I have seen right up there with Homeland (seasons1-2), wire, and breaking bad.

Which is funny, because they actually used as little as possible during the LoTR movies. They used a ton of forced perspective shots.

Giannis: “Nothing. Just get a ring now.”

As an aside, I think forced perspective is really cool.

The only "War of the Worlds" I enjoyed was the original 1938 radio production of it by Orson Welles.

It's pretty amazing how convincing it is. I remember getting it from Zablocki Library when I was a kid and loving it. It's pretty terrifying...it's understandable that it caused some people to think it was real.

I liked the 1994 version. I remember watching it live at my grandparents' place on Halloween.

I liked the 1983 version:

John Wick 3 was fun.

Spoiler:
The weapons museum scene with the knives was absurdly great. Halle Berry also kicked ass.

Anyone see Climax? I rented it last night and while I like weird and experimental, I can't say I enjoyed this movie.

So excited for the Deadwood movie this Friday. For the readers, you should definitely check out the novels that the show loosely drew upon by Pete Dexter. Some big differences, but Dexter is an amazing writer, and his life is quite a story in and of itself: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/vdzdv9/pete-dexter-276-v16n12

I don't really regret watching any of Noe's stuff but enjoyable isn't a word I'd use either.

OMG, dude! I've been looking for this forever! The ending when the dude looks at the radar monitor is something that burned into my childhood memory. I could never remember the name of it though.

Yeah I agree. I guess I didn't think it was particularly good or interesting in any way. On the other hand, everyone should watch the greasy strangler. Just watch it alone and take it all in and ponder the greatness. Just never speak of it to anyone else.

I'm part of the scant demographic that's a fan of Pete Dexter, yet did not know his role with "Deadwood." That interview is great and I cannot recommend reading his work on boxing enough. The Stacks, one of the verticals on Deadspin, ran his series of pieces on heavyweight contender/legendary character actor Randall "Tex" Cobb and his fight with Larry Holmes and hoo boy. One of those barefisted writers you lump in along with Royko, Terkel and Breslin.

I watched the first episode of Chernobyl last night. It was really good, though I'm not sure if I can get over the fact that it's all folks with English accents playing Russians. Almost would have preferred Russians with english subtitles.

Wow you nailed it, absolutely. There just aren't any writers like him these days anymore, novel-wise and certainly writing for newspapers. Those Cobb/Holmes articles are fantastic, did you read "Spooner?" He incorporates the Cobb/Philadelphia incident into the story.

I also thought this was a sad and poignant look at the current struggles of David Milch as the Deadwood movie comes out tonight: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/05/27/david-milchs-third-act
