DLo is victim of the awful defender narrative when in truth he is close to average at his position, and big enough to switch onto multiple positions. Just the sheer size of those two at the guard spots at 6’5 and 6’6 is going to be impactful defensively. I also just believe Booker is capable of a large improvement on that end. Then you have Melton who is an elite point of attack defender as well as Bridges who is near elite at containing smaller players.

On the other hand, Randle and Ayton might be an untenable front court long term. But the talent upgrade would be so vast and we’re not exactly a contender so I don’t think we need to worry about finding the absolute perfect fit. He’s not my first choice but I wouldn’t say no, especially to a short term deal that will at worst result in a tradable contract. On defense he shares the same strengths and weaknesses as Ayton. Pretty good at containing guys 1v1, and can step out onto smaller players. But they are both poor defenders at the rim, in space, making reads and anticipation, and just generally lacking instincts. An equal worry is on the offensive end where Randle is an interior bully who likes to clog the paint. He also has Josh Jackson syndrome where he’ll put his head down and charge the lane blindly. He’s worth about 10-12 million in my opinion, but his value goes down for us because we aren’t going to maximize his game.

C'mon, you have been around these forums long enough to know there is no such thing as an average defender. That doesnt exist, either a player is an excellent defender, or is an absolute defensive liability or a total sieve with matador turnstile defensive tactics. There is no in between, and how dare you suggest otherwise!

What’s van fleet going to do for us ?

Melton is already better than him

This is just laughable. It seems like you are superstar or nothing at the PG and **** on other people's ideas with really stupid comments.

We need a PG who can defend, hit the three, and get the ball to Ayton/Booker not some mythical PG you think exists out there.

Rubio is awful bro he cant shoot at all makes ball look like steph curry. I like ball but he has to improve his shot, I think he can, but if not those guys just get exposed in the league now.

Melton is too green to be considered in the same category of VanVleet right now.
Fred has a ton of league experience too.
Melton probably has him on defense but I'd still take FVV's experience right now.

If the Raptors lose the finals, does anyone foresee Masai moving Siakam for AD (contingent on he and Leonard sticking together for 2-3 years)?

AD would be a great pick up for any team, but it would take more than Siakam. I just don't know if it is worth what they would have to give up. Siakam seems to keep getting better.

I liked Randle last summer, but after reading your Melton/Van Vleet take, I'm too afraid to agree with you on anything.

Doesn't he still have a player option at $9+ mil? I just don't know what it would cost us to move enough salary to get him. I am thinking he would want in the $12-15 mil range.

I like him, and think his defense would improve if we develop an all out hustle squad. But that would mean we would need to keep Tyler. Plus if we clear that much cap space, we lose our Standard MLE, which is a $9 mil potential contract. We need to build a team good enough to make the playoffs, in an already stacked Western Conference.

Please explain to me how Van Fleet would do in Meltons role for the Suns? & Vice Versa?

Would love to hear a professional analysts opinion

If we can get him for $15 mill I say sign him. He is a hustle player, and I think Randle / Ayton would work.

I like the staggering as someone suggested. Ayton would really have to work on his outside shot, and both of them would have to buy into the coach's system.

But I am just concerned with how we would get that much cap space. And then we are limited on what we can spend. We only would have the Room MLE and vet mins to offer, and we still need a good starting point guard.

I am more concerned with Randle defensively with how Ayton plays. The reason Toronto is the tough match up is they have guys that can defend. Now, if the Suns get a PG and sign Randle - I won’t hate it. But just want to make sure this is about fit too.

Totally, I think we all want good defense. Drafting Clarke and keeping other strong defenders, I think Randle could buy into a more defensive minded team. Ayton needs to step up his defense as well.

It's funny the Randle thing has caused suns Twitter to get testy lol

While I'm not quite as down on looking at Randle as this dude I do agree with his take in general.

And who would he choose? Or does he not have the balls to put himself out there?

It doesn't matter much, because I don't see us clearing that cap space to get Randle.

For all of those interested in staggering Ayton and Randle:

"Per Cleaning the Glass (which excludes garbage time), lineups with Randle at center own a -12.3 net rating in 491 possessions. This is mainly a result of the 123.5 defensive rating that such lineups own, which ranks in the 0th percentile across the league. These lineups have struggled in all four key areas of defense, as they rank in the 0th percentile in opponent effective field goal percentage (58.3 percent), the 16th percentile in opponent turnover percentage (12.9), the 18th percentile in opponent offensive rebound percentage (29.0) and the 12th percentile in opponent free throw rate (24.2)."
