I think in 2 starts vs Kelvim, we barely touched him.
Escobar is one of the long line of Angel players who owns the Yankees: Escobar, Shields, Garret Anderson, Lackey, Figgins, etc.
I guess it's just wishful thinking to think we are going to score off of him.

Not at all, actually. Giving Torre unrestricted access to a guy who can fireball like Joba can is like sticking your hand into a hornet's nest - you're just asking for trouble. I want to see him pitch more because he's just so much fun to watch, but we should stick to this plan so we can stretch his arm out through the playoffs. Needless to say, there will be no Joba rules in the post-season.

I mean, the brass should loosen up a little. Let him pitch an inning on back to back nights, but not 3 nights in a row...something like that. Its not like this kid was babied in college or anything. At some point kids are going to have to learn how to pitch. What is going to happen if we make the playoffs and play on back to back nights? Joba gets basically sidelined and we get to see Farnsworth come in in the 7th. Cant wait till that happens.
What i'm getting at is he threw 9 pitches on Sunday afternoon in New York. The game ended at like 4:30. You're telling me it would have hurt him 5 years from now if he pitched another inning at 1 AM EST in LA?

No of course it wouldn't hurt him, but it's a slippery slope that I wouldn't trust Torre to make the judgments on. Today it's letting him pitch back to back because he only threw 9 pitches, next time it could be letting him pitch back to back because he only threw 12, and so on. He's also pitched as a starter all season and logged plenty of innings as is, so I wouldn't be leaping to push him any further than we need to prior to the playoffs.

Joba threw 118 innings in a college season that lasted from mid Feb-mid June, not to mention summer league ball that year. The next year he threw over 80 college innings. These kids arent babied in college ball, I just don't get why it starts when they get to the majors. Either leave him in the minors all year or don't give him this one day on one day off crap. I have never heard of a major league team doing that with a reliever. I could understand a starter, limiting pitches. The least they could do is reevaluate it each day.

Joba is only being babied right now because he made the transition to the bullpen. For a guy who had injury concerns when he was drafted, they want to ease him into a completely different role as much as possible.
Cashman even said himself that it is up to him to give Torre less "rules" to follow, and I sense a change will be coming very soon.

Because no team wants to end up with the next Mark Prior. In college, these guys aren't locked up to guaranteed multi-million dollar deals, but major league teams have a responsibility to protect their investments. Joba's slider is probably his most distinguishing pitch, but there have been a litany of articles about kids hurting themselves because they threw too many sliders at a young age. Just look at Hughes - we switched him off of sliders to curveballs to protect his arm.
This year Joba pitched 88 minor league innings, primarily as a starter, which would translate to a full workload for most relievers. Now he's being transitioned to the bullpen and shouldn't be taxed like a normal reliever is considering how late the switch occurred. I hear what you're saying, but I doubt the gloves will come off until mid-September. No reason to overtax his arm knowing what he could bring to our pen in October.
