THIS.
The NBA is a multi-billion dollar business that Silver & Co. aren't just going to leave up to good ol' fashioned competition. That includes steering which teams pick in the draft (i.e. Cavs three no. 1 picks in 4 years, AD gifted to Tom Benson for buying/keeping team in NOLA just 2 months prior to the 2012 draft), All-Star Games (NOLA and LA 3 times each in recent years), and yes, having marquee playoff series going 7 games instead of 4 or 5.
Look up former mafia boss Michael Franzese. During his heyday he was involved with sports betting and said that basketball is hands down the easiest sport to control the outcome of. The refs can essentially take key players out of the equation with timely fouls or let them slide with no-calls. Then, albeit with comparatively lesser frequency, players can point shave. There have been a number of NBA games I've seen in the last 5 years where I've wondered if certain players or teams have been paid to lay down so a series can be extended.
Tony Brothers, Scott Foster, Ken Mauer, Sean Corbin, and Ed Malloy are the league's ref goon squad. When they're on the court, you know the game is fixed.
That first part is tin foil hat stuff. Maybe the first lotto where they grabbed envelopes, but the modern draft lotto can't be faked.
The second part, yeah, i've believed that in the past is true, and I have evidence that it can't be true still.
It's naive to believe that a business won't control any factor it can to increase revenue. The NBA is not letting ping pong balls (aka "chance") decide which players are drafted to which teams, therefore potentially impacting franchise valuations, TV deals, sponsorships in the millions and billions. Everyone accepts reality at their own pace, I suppose.
Yeah, the league dictating to the refs to keep the Raptors out of the finals to insulate them from the enormous revenue drop off and ratings collapse is sound evidence of your theory.
Also, Raptors are on a three game winning streak with Brothers reffing. Again, more evidence to support your tin foil theories.
