he is worth a lot more than MLE and we will match any offer at this point. Looney will be our major defensive piece moving forward.

Looney is kind of weird standing straight up with both hands on his hips like they are sore or something.
He has old man hips.

Game 3 was a great example of why the Warriors must pay literally anything to keep Looney.
They have no other young talent, and most of the veterans are completely unreliable or washed up also.

Not really. The Warriors are pretty much doomed this year because they simply can't play defense. Clearly Green is not capable of covering for all the defensive mistakes the scrubs have been making. Looney is one of the best defenders in the NBA. He is the perfect player to pair with an all-time great scorer like Curry.

Looney is not one of the best defenders in the NBA lmao. jesus. hyperbole abound. He fits in with what we do. But if you pay him a massive deal he will no longer be the fan favorite, he will then have expectations and people will start to point out all the things he can't do rather than appreciate his niche. I hope we keep him for the right price but we have Klay, Durant and Draymond to pay over the next two offseasons. If some team wants to pay Looney a massive amount of money those are the breaks that come with being a dynasty. Role players get overpaid elsewhere. The answer to that isn't matching absurd contracts to keep your role players.

I don't have time to roll out a million stats. But tonight's game should have been horrifying to Warrior fans. Curry had an all-time great performance at home. The Warriors should have won this game 99.9% of the time. They didn't come close because the defense got eviscerated. Role players are not interchangeable. Advanced stats show that Looney is massively more valuable than anyone but the top core players. You need at least 6 players to have a good chance to win a title.
Curry
Green
Durant(probably leaving)
Iguodala(getting old)
Klay
?????
If you count Durant and Iguodala as .5 each then you are at 4. Even if things work out great you are still at 5. If Looney doesn't re-sign the Warriors would have an awful bench. They have absolutely zero cap space to sign anyone decent. That's why you have to match anything. The chance of signing someone better than Looney is close to zero and nearly every other role player on the Warriors has been failing.

I'm not saying he's not important or that we have a viable replacement if a team pays him. But paying him upwards of 12m per is **** insane

I don't agree.
Hopefully the curse of Barnes saves the Warriors from matching a huge offer though, because Looney is more valuable than Harrison ever was.

Its not my money so I really don't care and especially since not signing him doesn't open up money to do anything else.. but I'm just warning all of you LooneyTooners that if we pay him that type of money we are going to be even thinner on the bench and he's going to be put under a micrscope and the honeymoon faze is going to end quickly.
I'm not looking at a game without Klay and KD and saying "see this just showed how much we need Looney!"

It won't really affect the rest of the bench because everyone else is close to a minimum player anyways.
You should look at it that way.
Last night-
Offensive rating- 110.1. Pretty good. Enough to win a lot of NBA games.
Defensive rating- 124.2. Absolutely horrible. Much worse than the worst defensive team in the league.
Looney is a better defender than Klay or Durant. He could have been the difference between winning and losing game 3.

What do you think if these stats when he played for this year? His RMP is better than all but 9 NBA centers, and suggests he was much more effective than Jones, Bell, and was equal to Cousins in game impact (Cousins was 11th).

No one is going to offer Looney anywhere near $12M/yr so that won't be an issue. Sure he looks good in certain situations with the Warriors, but there is just no market for undersized non-shooting centers. I could see the Warriors signing him to something like a 3yr/$15-18M contract.

I feel the same way and I have zero issue paying him this much.
Whether some team comes out of left field for a huge offer? It wouldn't shock me. Like I said that's how it usually happens with role players on elite teams. Bad teams overvalue them. If not, awesome, hang on to him. But in the hypothetical scenario someone overpays, let him go.

Re: Kevon Looney is not an NBA caliber player
We can't let Looney or any Bird rights guys go because we can't pay anybody to replace them. We get one taxpayer MLE. Last year we used it on Cousins.
On top of that Looney is smart and understands how to play with the Warriors. Looney is worth more to the Warriors than other teams. Even if some crazy team over pays him the Warriors must match if the Warriors really don't care about spending money and just want to have as good of a team as they can.
