If they have 2 MAX slots, that means they gave up D-Lo, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, and 2 1st round picks.

I would say they gave up players and assets of value.

I don't really know what the Nets are doing, but I think one can think of it this way.

They had ~$49m in cap space - but $21m and $7.5m tied up in D-Lo and RHJ if they didn't renounce them. That's not enough to sign a max FA into space. (I'm assuming they wouldn't have been likely to get a 25% one). It might have been enough to trade for an AD/Beal/Jrue level of salary player (into cap space), keeping D-Lo and RHJ (or RHJ in the trade) - but that's about it.

Now they have close to $67m in cap space - but with $21m and $7.5m tied up in D-Lo and RHJ if they didn't renounce them. So there are a few things they can now do that they couldn't before. (1) Sign KD into space, keep D-Lo and RHJ (and Napier & Graham if you care about that). (2) Renounce D-Lo and RHJ (but not Napier & Graham, again, iycat - actually, afaics, they can even keep those two rookie scale contracts signing in the dog days of the reg season - their equivalents of Billy Garrett) and sign two 30% FA into space. Giving, for the sake of argument, Irving, Butler, Dinwiddie, Harris, Prince, LeVert, Allen, Musa, Napier, Kurucs, Graham, Pinson, Williams. (3) Same as (1) but with a 30% FA and have a little salary cap - maybe $8m - for FAs/trades into space (4) trade for a $27m guy (mainly) into cap space, keep D-Lo and RHJ, maybe end up with some random number of cap space - although this last is harder given they've just given two picks away.

[edit] if they do waive Napier & Graham by 10th July that gives them another $1.7m in cap space - and that is teetering close to waive and stretching someone (if they can't dump another $2.5m in salary) and giving them a shot at KD+a30%-FA. So, yeah, that thing.

Your logic is off. Kawhi reportedly had interest in New York. With Toronto in the NBA Finals, the chances of him wanting to leave diminish. If you trade for him, you increase odds he stays.

I don't see how trading for Kawhi and missing the playoffs/getting bounced in the first round would increase the odds of him staying.

The end result is the same. He didn't want to be in Toronto. He still might not want to be in Toronto.

If he wanted NY before, and would have been inclined to stay with KD, he can have both NY and KD now.
