POR gets Hayward
BOS gets Holiday, Harkless (expiring)
NOP gets Turner (expiring), 2019 BOS #14, 2020 POR 2nd

Assumption here: Both Rozier and Irving are gone.

I don't think NOLA can get two 1sts for Holiday so that might be as good as it gets, return-wise. Portland banks on Hayward's continued improvement. If not, it's still a solid gamble with just expirings and a 2nd going out.

I personally wouldn't do it since I'm fine with Smart as a starting PG but if Cs aren't that confident in him and they want to free up the wing position for Brown/Tatum, the move is palatable. Harkless is a nice bonus swing depth.

Holiday / Brown / Tatum / Horford / Baynes
Smart / shooter-scorer FA* / Ojeleye / Harkless / Williams
Wanamaker / Theis / #20 / #22

* might not take MLE: Matthews, Redick, Danny Green, Ross
might take MLE: Curry, Bullock, Lamb

At some point next season, I want Williams starting but that might be wishful thinking.

What's wrong with a Smart/Holiday starting backcourt? 2 All-NBA defenders is not a bad way to go. Both can play with and without the ball.
and that's "MR. Irrelevant" to you!!

Nothing really.
Cs can switch it up and put Brown as the 6th man / primary scorer on the second unit. Use MLE on a PG like Beverley instead. You just wish Brown doesn't act up in his contract year being placed on the bench unit again.

EDIT:
If Williams ever learns NBA-level defense, Smart-Holiday-Tatum-Horford-Williams would be a nasty defensive five having elite ball pressure (Holiday), two intelligent free safeties/help guys (Horford/Smart), length from wing position (Tatum), and crazy rim protection / last line of defense (Williams).

First off, smart is not a PG and him as our starting pg would be a disaster. He can’t really shoot. He improved this year, but wouldn’t trust him to consistently make one. Second, he has no play making skills. He has a lot of turnovers and occasionally puts up dumb plays. He’s good defensively and is a right fit next to high scoring pg’s.

Constructing a 2020 Celtics Team w/ AD and no Kyrie

Post#144 » by Ring7Banner18 » Fri Jun 7, 2019 2:02 am

Assumptions to narrow the focus of discussion:
Kyrie leaves. No S&T, no returning assets.
Celtics trade for AD with no agreed upon extension

How would you go about constructing next year's roster (with the obvious aim of retaining AD)?

My proposal:

Tatum, Smart, Yabu, Rob Williams, 14, MEM pick to NOP for AD
Three way trade with BOS sending Horford and 2nd round pick and receiving Conley; CHA sending Biyombo, Marvin Williams, 12 and receiving Horford; MEM sending Conley and receiving Biyombo, Marvin Williams, 12 and 2nd round pick
Resign Morris
Resign Rozier
Baynes opts in

Starters
Conley
Brown
Hayward
Davis
Baynes

Bench
Rozier
Morris
Theis
Ojeyle
Pick 20
Free Agents

Trade 6 years of Tatum for 1 year of a repeat disaster like the current Irving one? **** that.
A new dawn will rise in Boston. ‎#StayLoyal THANK YOU TRUTH!

Yep, Ainge would need some kind of assurance.
And even then, the burn is too fresh, he might be forced to play it safe.

I don't see a scenario where Horford agrees to be sent to Charlotte.

The goal I presume is to convince AD to stay past next season. Short of getting a KD or Kawhi, I just don't see it happening. We'd be like Pelicans 2.0, a situation he doesn't want to be a part of again.

Nope there is no reason to get burned twice, kyrie lied but AD has never wanted to be here. You can think about it but I can't think of any reason to sell the farm for rentals.

Nice breakdown, and welcome! I just merged this into the existing thread so we only have to click 6 or 7 constantly instead of 7 or 8. 8-)
I'll change the thread title to just be non-Kyrie edition when I figure out how...

Agree 100% I love AD but you can't take the risk after getting burned by Irving. Not only would he leave after 1 year he might get the mysterious injury we've seen so often.Stick with the young core and make smart moves.Don't bring in guys that don't want to be here.

Here are the potential directions once Kyrie leaves:

■ Reset/reload/stay competitive -- Whoever we sign, align the contracts with Hayward's so we can be players in the FA market by 2021. So no long-term deals. Another reason why I don't want Rozier. He would want at least a 4-year deal that may be hard to move later on. Hopefully, we can convince Horford to sign 1+1. Play hard and overachieve as Stevens teams usually do. Continue winning so we can convince future star FAs to play in Boston.

■ Youth movement route -- Build around Tatum and Brown asap. Develop Williams and Ojeleye. Draft wisely the next 3 seasons and hopefully at least one of these guys turn into a top 10 player. Do you view Rozier as a developmental player? Can you flip his contract later on for a 1st? Or do we let him walk and just draft a high-upside PG?

■ All-in on AD, baby! -- Take the huge risk as Toronto did with Kawhi and OKC with PG. It doesn't work out, we bottom out for the next three to four seasons, yikes. If we win a title, woohoo! Hope his desired teams don't have the cap space next offseason. And we might even convince AD to stay long-term. Gamble paid off, hurray!

■ Look to other stars -- Use assets on other stars? Are there even any worth acquiring and could lead us to the Finals?

Spoiler:
Ainge might still go after Kyrie, KD, AD, and whoever else in the offseason, but in the event he fails to get us a top shelf talent via trade, what type of players would you like to add to our current core? You can name names as long as they're reasonably available.

Assumed returning core: Horford, Hayward, Tatum, Brown, Smart, Williams, Ojeleye, Baynes

Here's my wishlist:
◾ Mobile big that can gobble up boards, protect the rim, and pass some; Either play alongside Horford or as 1st big off bench. Ideally, Cs can groom Robert III to be that guy.
◾ Defensive specialist that can slow down Giannis without much help. Does such a guy exist? Sadly, the Bucks are the new Cavs/Heat and the Greek Freak just took over Lebron's throne. They'll only get better and will be a stupid speedbump on our road to the Finals.
◾ Long-range sharpshooter that you can't leave open ala Redick, Danny Green, Klay, Ray Allen, etc. Someone who can run around screens and pull up upon catching. I actually wish Brown or Tatum can turn into this.
◾ 6'6" or above backup PG that won't be a defensive liability.
◾ Elite bench scorer. The corpse of Jamal Crawford need not apply. No to IT either.

Let all of them be selfless, team-first, gritty players. No more low BBIQ guys. No more dicks/divas.

P.S.
If your only comment would be "that team won't win anything blah blah blah," 'cos we won't have a top-5 talent anyway, this might not be the thread for you.

Sorry, couldn't help but bump this. This was before Horford left and we signed Kemba. We just got sidetracked and Jays/Smart just needed some more seasoning.

Mobile big: Timelord
Giannis defender: Horford/Grant + help
Long-range bomber: Pritchard (+ Nesmith next year)
Tallish PG: Derrick White
Elite bench scorer: Desmond Bane (kidding!)

Top-5 talent... You better believe Tatum is right there.
