NBA extension for KD

Post#1 » by Warriorfan » Wed Jun 12, 2019 2:01 pm

Can it be negotiated that KD opts in and the Warriors add 5 year extension to max the $ KD can get. Plus warriors save almost 70 mil in repeater tax.

In other words, if KD can be persuaded to take a reduced salary once again, would GS benefit? Sure. Again. But he has said he's not doing that anymore, so we'll see how that flies.

1 He can opt in by June 29, and later be extended max amount
2 Can add 4 more years onto the opt in, if the extension happens in July
3 He couldn't get the same total that way as a new 5 year max deal with GS - my rough quick calc says its about 7M less this season, and 3-4M per season less in future seasons

5 yr extension it is. There is the 36 yr rule anyway.

No, KD would not qualify for a 5 year extension. His limit would be 4 if done in July, 3 in June, and even shorter if an extend-and-trade.

The age-related rule is "over-38" and would not come into play.

The total from the opt-in plus 4 year max extension is less than if he signed a 5 year max with GS now, but is it still more than other teams could offer? If so, KD is only taking a reduced salary against what the Warriors could maximally give him, but not reduced compared to what the market would give him if he left GS. That doesn't sound like a bad compromise for a contract with a player who won't play next year and may return at significantly (perhaps massively) reduced effectiveness after his eventual return.

Saves the Warriors 6x9 million first year and about 20 million per year thereafter. Maybe a front office job in future

Imo, Hard to imagine GSW not giving KD the 5yr max ext. next summer if he did opt into the 1yr extension if he wanted to stay (especially if they win this year's championship).
It's possible, on the far end, he will not have played yet depending on how recovery goes.

I would wager that KD will opt out, and any team (including GS) who wants to sign him will have to offer a full max deal to get him. Go big, or go home. If the Warriors want to cheap out on him, right now, after what he's done for them, that's a real slap in the face. I don't even know how they could begin to suggest such an idea to him.
