Looks like the ping pong balls broke the tie to give us the #19 pick in this year's draft.

The Spurs were able to draft fan favorite/future Hall of Famer Lonnie Walker IV at the 18th spot in last year’s draft and it is a commonly known fact that picking in the same spot in consecutive years is a deeply cursed enterprise. Folks, we really dodged a bullet here.

https://www.poundingtherock.com/2019/4/12/18308426/san-antonio-spurs-pick-19th-2019-nba-draft

Is the bold a lark? Never heard it before, but anyway, any kind of good vibe going forward is welcome.

Dejounte Murray soaks up knowledge while giving Spurs a boost with his 'energy'
From a camaraderie standpoint, injured point guard Dejounte Murray's presence on this trip has given the Spurs a boost.

"To have him around, feel his energy, hear his voice, it's a great thing," guard Bryn Forbes said after shootaround Tuesday morning at the Pepsi Center. "And I think it's good for him too."

But the main reason Murray is accompanying the Spurs on the road throughout the playoffs is to learn more about the game, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

"Dejounte needs as much experience as he can get," Popovich said. "He's missing the whole year, so (it's good for him to) see what we emphasize as far as the culture, the Os and Xs, learn about his teammates, learn more about DeMar (DeRozan), understand how we want to play, see what the coaches say positively and negatively about what we do. Because he's going to be an important part of what we do next year, the more knowledge we can stuff into him the better."

When he's not sitting in on coaches meetings and film session, Murray continues to do his rehab work.

"He's been grinding, working really hard," guard Patty Mills said. "It's good for us to see how hard he is working."

Forward LaMarcus Aldridge said Murray's injury hasn't stopped him from providing leadership.

"He's our point guard, so he's always talking and making sure guys are good," Aldridge said. "It's nice to have him around for sure."

Popovich recalls life lessons learned at Air Force Academy
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich gave cadets a pep talk via video Saturday night during his induction speech for the Air Force Academy Athletics Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Popovich addressed the crowd while wearing an "Air Force Family Shirt," the Colorado Springs Gazette reported.

"Cadet Popovich 703621K reporting for duty," he said in his opening remarks.

"For all you cadets that might be there," Popovich continued. "I'm sure you have days when you're wondering why you're here, or things look pretty tough. Let me tell you, there was no bigger wise guy than me upon entering the academy, and to this day I think back to all the lessons that I learned there that have informed me and helped organize my life in this profession. I couldn't be more proud of having graduated from the academy, and being honored right now is very special."

Popovich graduated from Air Force in 1970. A two-year letterman, he was the Falcons team captain in 1970 and later returned as an assistant coach for six seasons. He ranks third in school history in career field goal percentage with a 54.1 mark.

Hmm, I'm torn at this news. On the one hand, both deserve to run their own teams; on the other, I'd really love it if we had the same assistant crew back (provided they're happy to be there) for consistency and imparting of Spurs corporate knowledge. They're part of a larger group of candidates that has been and will be interviewed, so hopefully we hold on to both at least for next season:

Reports: Cavs to interview Spurs assistant Udoka
The Cavs, who have been taking a methodical approach in finding their next coach, will meet with Udoka on Sunday, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team is not revealing any of its plans.

Udoka has worked on Gregg Popovich’s staff since 2012, a year after he retired following stints with the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Portland Trail Blazers, Spurs and Sacramento Kings. The 41-year-old Udoka has been lauded for his work with former Spurs star Kawhi Leonard and others. The Cavs are intent on adding a coach with a strong background in player development, and Udoka fits that profile.

Report: Cavs to interview Spurs assistant Messina
The Cavaliers experimented with a successful European coach a few years ago with mixed results. They may try it again.

Cleveland has scheduled an interview this week with San Antonio Spurs assistant Ettore Messina, a person familiar with the Cavs' coaching search said Monday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team is keeping details of its search confidential.

Messina's coaching resume includes an impeccable run in Europe, where he won numerous titles and also coached Italy's national team. The 59-year-old Messina has worked on coach Gregg Popovich's staff in San Antonio since 2014 and is widely regarded as one of the NBA's top assistants.

Well ****. I had really hoped that after Udoka hadn't landed a head coaching position he would remain with us, but it looks like the 76ers have snagged themselves a quality assistant. I don't know what Brett's contract is like, but it seems as if Pop's contract extension and having the very experienced Ettore as first assistant may have been factors in his decision (I am just speculating based on what we do know and deducing from it). With Ime as our longest tenured assistant having been here since 2012, well, you can't blame him for looking around the landscape and figuring he'd be closer to having a HC shot elsewhere via the assistant route. Plus there's familiarity with BB as well. Happy for him, though I am torn about it for us. It opens up an opportunity for someone else. I wonder who we hire? Or promote from within? Yet another piece to deal with over the summer. It seems as if it's a busier time than when we actually play!:

76ers hire Spurs assistant coach Ime Udoka
One of the Spurs’ highly regarded assistants is joining another Pop disciple
Spurs assistant coach Ime Udoka has been hired for the same position by Brett Brown and the Philadelphia 76ers, per The Athetlic’s Shams Charania.

Read on Twitter

Udoka played for the Spurs in two different stints (2007-09 and 2010-11) and has been an assistant coach under Gregg Popovich since 2012. Also a former teammate of LaMarcus Aldridge in Portland, he was an integral part of the Spurs’ largest free agent signing under Pop

And there goes another one. 76ers poaching from us today:

Sixers hire Cameron Hodges from Spurs to bolster team’s coaching roster
The 76ers have hired Cameron Hodges as an assistant coach, adding to their player-development ranks. This move comes after the squad chose not to bring back respected shooting coach John Townsend. Hodges, who holds a similar position with the San Antonio Spurs, will join the Sixers after his three-year tenure concludes at the end of the month.

Hodges is expected to work out with a variety of players, including All-Star point guard Ben Simmons, whose outside shooting has been a weakness since he entered the NBA. The Sixers have just four players committed to next year’s roster, so Hodges’ specific role, as well as the role of the team’s other player-development coaches, remains to be seen. But Simmons, who has averaged 16.4 points in his two-year pro career, and his shooting woes would seem a natural fit for Hodges.

Hodges worked under Spurs assistant Chip Engelland, who heads San Antonio’s player-development program along with Will Hardy. He’s also someone Sixers coach Brett Brown will be comfortable with, considering the coach is part of San Antonio’s coaching tree.

Brown began his career there as a player-development coach and then was a longtime assistant before being named the Sixers head coach before the 2013-14 season. Brown and Hodges did not work together in San Antonio.

This article sourced another which detailed the Spurs' strong social media presence. We were tenth in
... value... delivered to partners on social media.

The NBA comfortably leads all major pro leagues:
The NFL is the undisputed king of the U.S.-based sports leagues.

But it's the NBA — thanks to its star-studded roster of athletes and its penchant for year-round drama — that owns social media.

The analysis said that during a period that started on Oct. 1, 2018, and ended on June 14 (the day after the NBA Finals), the social media accounts of the league and its 30 teams generated more than $1.1 billion of value for its brand partners. The tally was almost three times as much as the NFL's $343 million in brand value, and ran circles around that of the NHL ($268 million) and MLB ($163 million).

We ranked ninth on social media:
9. Spurs: 7.1 million on Facebook, 2.7 million on Instagram, 3.4 million on Twitter; 13.2 million total

The post above and this one lend insight into how successfully the Spurs organization engages with fans:

NBA lauds Spurs for sales campaign
The NBA honored the Spurs with its New Sales Campaign of the Year Award at the league's Revenue & Analytics Workshop in Las Vegas, the league announced Thursday.

In a press release, the league credited the Spurs for the way they "transformed their sales and service strategy by prioritizing the development of people, culture, efficiency and new product development."

As part of the campaign, the Spurs restructured their sales and service division and "invested heavily in sales enablement technology" while creating "new, flexible ticketing products such as the Spurscription and Spurs Passport."

"These changes led to higher employee satisfaction and retention rates, and the highest overall ticket revenue generated in franchise history," the release stated.
